Egel and Wim: I have selected this article as the Selected Article of the Month for the Scouting portal. As you two are our resident experts on this topic, please look over the article (Scouting Nederland) and its portal draft version (Portal:Scouting/Selected article/November), and edit as you see fit to improve them. Also, I have selected Piet J. Kroonenberg as the bio of the month. Rlevse 22:40, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
- Question-Scouting Nederland says there are 90,000 scouts and 25,000 staff. Does staff mean adult volunteers who help run the units. This would make sense to me. But if it means Scouting Nederland paid professionals, it seems a very high ratio of staff relative to Scouts (about 1:4). Rlevse 10:01, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
- 25,000 adult volunteers, maybe 20 to 30 paid professionals. --Egel Reaction? 14:23, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
- Why did you cut out Scouting Nederland from the Crown Scout part of the Eagle article? Wim said he's a Crown Scout. Has something changed? If so, what is it called now? Rlevse 10:55, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
- 1. Scouting Nederland officially swapped the rank-system (3th class - Crown Scout) for a system with just one "rank" (something like Second Class) somewhere in the mid 1970s. Scouts can still work on merit badges but not in a rank-system.
- 2. The Scouts section in the Netherlands is (officially) 11 to 14 year, so a scout doesn't have the time to pass all requirments for Crown Scout.
- In reality about 7% of the groups work with the official system, 46% has a self-developed (or the old) rank-system and 48% has no rank-system.
- So Wim has been scout before the mid 1970s or he is not a "official" Crown Scout. --Egel Reaction? 17:23, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
- So there's no highest rank/recognition under the current system? Rlevse 17:25, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
- Not officially. --Egel Reaction? 17:40, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
- Interesting. I like the old way better. Rlevse 17:50, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

Yep, I got my Crown Scout mid 1970s, I guess in 1975 or 1976, when I was 15/16. And indeed I was one of the last. I too find it a big pity that we don't have any ranking or other advancement methodology in Scouting Nederland any more. Wim van Dorst (Talk) 22:01, 27 November 2006 (UTC).

[edit]See inline notes and edits by Outriggr, this is why I merged the history intro into the body. Let me know what you think. Sumoeagle179 15:09, 27 December 2006 (UTC)
- There should be some kind of intro there. Do you like this one beter?:
Robert Baden-Powell founded the Scouting movement in England in 1907 based on his own experience, in and outside the army and information from other youth organizations. It was first only for boys but in 1910 it became for girls too. Later it spread all over the world to young people of all ages.

Orphaned non-free image (Image:Scoutsengidsenvlaanderenlogo.jpg)
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Scoutsengidsenvlaanderenlogo.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Pax Ting
[edit]Hi Egel. Nice article on Pax Ting - you've neatly condensed a lot of information into a small space. Would you check your source for the number of countries attending? You wrote 23 in the article. I have a book that says it was 32. I reckon somewhere along the line there's been a typo! Kingbird 08:51, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
- "there were only 5800 girls" (some sources say 4000) and "It was decided that 120 Girl Guides and 12 leaders from every country could take part." when this is right: 23 countries => 2760 Guides and 276 leaders , 32 countries => 3820 Guides and 382 Leaders, so I think 32 is right. --Egel Reaction? 12:11, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Australian Scout Medalion.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Australian Scout Medalion.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 04:20, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

- PD in USA, but maybe still copyrighted elsewhere. I don't know who the designer is and if he died more than 70 years ago. So free for use on en.wikipedia, but not for commons. But they are probably based on a design by B-P so it is safe to assume they will enter PD in the European Community on 2012-1-1. Orphaned Scout Logo's by your actions
[edit]Sorry? I don't understand what you're asking. If the logos are not fairly used in any article, they should be deleted. If there is an issue about them being used in the future, they can be saved elsewhere or restored when they are needed. J Milburn (talk) 17:26, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry if I'm being dense, but I'm really not following. In what way am I being bureaucratic? Do you support leaving non-free images lying around when they are not being used on the off-chance they may be used in the future? J Milburn (talk) 17:55, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
- Removing content is often more beneficial to our encyclopedia than adding it. Remember that one of our fundamental goals is to be free, and decorating articles with non-free images is lessening our chances of achieving that goal, while not helping any other. We must balance our goals, and our guidelines and procedures provide a way to do that. If you think I am in error, please tell me what I should have done differently, rather than quoting at me. J Milburn (talk) 18:19, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
- Your issue is with how bold I am? There are a lot of pages with misused non-free media- people just don't seem to understand how strict our non-free content criteria are. My interpretations of the policy are perfectly standard ones among those who are familiar with it- you could almost view it as the same as correcting an often misspelt word. I'm not quite sure what you propose instead- leaving talk page messages is unwieldy considering the number of pages with abused non-free content, and redundant to an extent anyway because the consensus already exists. Messages to WikiProjects could work (and has done in the past) but efficient projects are the exception rather than the rule, and because it is entirely possible the WikiProject members will not understand the non-free content criteria- in this case, an editor I don't remember the name of offhand was all too quick to revert. Furthermore, you talk of life-and-death boldness- after BLP, the non-free content criteria is the negative policy (as opposed to the positive policies of reliable sources, neutral point of view etc) which has to be enforced the most strictly, as Wikipedia could hypothetically face legal charges over issues of non-free content. I suppose its the sheer number of pages (and the sheer apathy/lack of experience of a lot of editors) that mean I have to act in such a heavy-handed way, but I'm not some kind of renegade- the consensus already stands, I'm not pushing anything through, I'm following in the wake of others. As far as admins go, I'm actually pretty uncontroversial- I'm certainly not a controversial, IAR-loving admin. Interestingly, you challenged me before, saying that I was being too bureaucratic, but now you seem to be implying I should go through some process when removing non-free images- inform the right parties and get the right 'permission'. So what is it, am I overly bureaucratic, a rules-loving, process loving wonk, or am I some kind of rogue nut-job? You also mentioned civility- I'm sorry if I come across as uncivil- I do appreciate that I am talking to people who know a lot about their topics, and I do appreciate that I am talking to people who have the best interests of the project at heart. I have no intention of offending anyone. J Milburn (talk) 21:02, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
- This is the reason I have to be bold, proof that what little process there is for this just does not work. J Milburn (talk) 21:19, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

Surinaamse Padvindsters Raad logos
[edit]I'd say the discussion there was sufficient, but I don't think the images are formatted particularly well- thumbnails probably aren't the best option in this case. J Milburn (talk) 18:36, 2 October 2008 (UTC)
- I've moved one logo to the left. If the logos of the organisation really are that important, a discussion of them and an accompanying image would be appropriate. For an organisation like this, with two sub-organisations, this doesn't seem to be a problem, but for a much larger organisation with 3 or more logos to display, even with the discussion, this may seem like overuse. We shouldn't be wondering whether we can get away with using a logo- we should be considering whether we can get away without using it. J Milburn (talk) 18:43, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

Image copyright problem
[edit]Thanks for your uploads. You've indicated that the following images are being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why they meet Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page an image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check
- That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
- That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.
This is an automated notice by FairuseBot. For assistance on the image use policy, see Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. --09:27, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
Removal of gallerys
[edit]I undid most of your changes. In my eyes there are only two neutral possibilities of dealing with these images:
- Keeping all images, but not as gallery.
- Deleting all images.
Your solution of deleting only those emblems that are used in other articles is not neutral in my opinion. It puts undue weight on mainly secondary or tertiary organizations; most of those do not even reach the notability criteria.
WP:NPOV is also applicable to the illustration of articles. I remember mentioning this problem some time ago concerning Scouting in Belgium where the only emblems displayed were those of three small organisation with less than 1 % of the overall membership. --jergen (talk) 12:57, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

It needs to be ready before 00:00 UTC on 1 Dec. Thanks. — Rlevse • Talk • 00:59, 28 November 2008 (UTC)

Hi
Thanks for the colour corrections on File:Scouting Antiano.svg - all I had to go from was File:Scouting Antiano.png which is an embroidered badge, so not very clear, or true colour. The link you gave: http://www.jcc-curacao.com/index.php?page_id=4&style_id=0 loads very slowly for me and never finishes, and I can't see an image there at all. If you have something better for the fleur, please let me know, and I can redraw it. One of the problems is that the colours clash, so svg/monitors create uneven keylines around that shape. Try changing the colour of the red cross to blue , cyan, or yellow and you'll see the unevenness "swap" sides. If you remove the keyline on the fleur entirely, a fake one still appears. I'm not entirely sure that some of it isn't even an optical illusion. As I say though, anything better than that png to show the fleur would be great. Begoontalk 15:19, 6 August 2010 (UTC)
- Link to the logo: http://www.jcc-curacao.com/foto/33 --Egel Reaction? 15:29, 6 August 2010 (UTC)
- Doesn't work for me at the moment. I'll try again tomorrow - maybe a site problem or connection issue. Thanks. Begoontalk 16:20, 6 August 2010 (UTC)
The link worked today (it worked for a while - it doesn't load again now - seem to be some problems with that website) - so the fleur is redrawn. Thanks for the information. Begoontalk 13:34, 7 August 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you for the redrawning. The internet link between the Netherlands Antilles and the Netherlands is probably better than to where you are. --Egel Reaction? 13:59, 7 August 2010 (UTC)
Dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles
[edit]Egel, what will happen to the Scout and Guide organizations when the Netherlands Antilles dissolves in two months? Five separate organizations? Do they revert to branches of Scouting Nederland?--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 19:26, 7 August 2010 (UTC)
- Nothing changes for Aruba. Most people live on the largest island Curaçao, Bonaire is close to Curaçao and 3, 4 or 5 groups is to small to become a separate regio of Scouting Nederland and joining an existing regio has some disadvantages. I think it is more likely that the Bonaire groups will stay with the Curaçao groups and maybe the Sint Maarten groups will join the French.
- Padvindstersvereniging van de Nederlandse Antillen:10 Guide groups on Curaçao, 1 on Bonaire, none on Sint Maarten, Saba and Sint Eustatius
- Scouting Antiano: 21 Scout groups on Curaçao, 2 on Sint Maarten, 2 on Bonaire, none on Saba and Sint Eustatius.
- I will try to find more information. --Egel Reaction? 08:10, 8 August 2010 (UTC)

Two ideas...
[edit]I just created Category:Scout and Guide emblems in the public domain last night. Please have a look and tweak what you want, does it look okay to you? The images should be marked for move to Commons, however, some are ready to move to Commons, some should be vectorized (svg) before we move them to Commons. Since you are good with svg, can you help?--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 15:18, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
- Are all 4 points valid grounds for being public domain? Point 1 is only a safe assumption for it not being a registered trademark, it has no consequence for the copyright. Point 2 is valid for the copyright and it is unlikely an organisation still uses the same emblem after 70 year. Point 3: the same for Germany? ask Jergen. Point 4: You can only assume local and temporary event insignia were never registered as trademark or still registered as trademark after the event. (for example the World Jamboree insignia). In most counties copyright registration is/was never needed, all publications are/were automatic protected by copyright law.
- Those are good points, I will bring Jergen here as he is knowledgeable and cautious about such issues.--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 02:15, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
- I am learning svg step by step, I don't think I very good yet. --Egel Reaction? 19:11, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
- I think you are great already, much better than I could possibly do!--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 02:15, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
- Commons and logos/emblems isn't easy. Some comments:
- at 1: I can't comment on this, but this would not be practical in de.wp.
- at 2: The clause "as all Scout and Guide emblems are by nature derivative works based on the original ideas of Lord and Lady Baden-Powell" is strange.
- (1) There are some emblems which are certainly no derivative works of Baden-Powell's design. (BTW: BP'S designs are (at least) protected until January 1, 2012; designs by OBP are protected until January 1, 2048.)
- (2) It is very straightforward to assume that an author has not disclosed his identity when only the wp-description does not mention an author.
- at 3: Most (or all) German emblems are below the threshold of originality in Germany, but not in the US. Even those that are below it, are (or could be) trademarked in Germany, which is a problem on Commons.
- at 4: Could not be used in Germany. I don't think that this rule is compliant with Commons.
- at 5: This can be used for transfer to Commons - but there are only two (or three) emblems in the category: File:Lone Scouts of America 2.png, File:Svenska Missionskyrkans Ungdom Scout.svg and perhaps File:Asociación de Guías de Cuba.svg.
- On Commons, there is somewhere an help page on logos - but I could not find it. Personally, I would not move most of the files to Commons since I fear that a large part of them would be deleted. --jergen (talk) 10:34, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
- Commons and logos/emblems isn't easy. Some comments:

- It's great, thank you!--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 02:15, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

Comments on some emblems
[edit]Recent uploads:
- File:Kolonialpfadfinder.svg
- Unfortunately, the emblem in the source is not very realistic. The emblem was always black and white (more like the earlier version [2]), the cross had a faint border line and the outer leaves of the fleur-de-lis did not cover any part of the white quarters. If you are interested, I could provide a scan of original material.
- File:Bund deutscher Pfadfinder Südwestafrikas flag.svg
- This flag ist still in use by the Deutscher Pfadfinderbund Namibia; the corresponding emblem was the triangle in the center of the flag (in black and white), which was changed to the winged blue and gold triangle some years ago.
Image requests:
- http://media.scoutwiki.org/Image:Christliche_Pfadfinderschaft_Deutschlands.svg is not correct. I have got a better png somewhere.
Thanks for your work. --jergen (talk) 08:24, 28 August 2010 (UTC)
- The colours in Kolonialpfadfinder.svg are as requested by Kintetsubuffalo. On the flag in File:Bundesarchiv_Bild_102-12814,_Kairo,_Gruppe_deutsche_Pfadfinder.jpg, outer leaves of the fleur-de-lis do cover a part of the white quarters. Please provide a scan.
- If you have a better picture of the "triangle" and/or the present Deutscher Pfadfinderbund Namibia logo then please provide. Both svg's are best guesses on the basis of (very) low resolution pictures.
- Please provide that png. Is it like the first page of [3] or like page "20/21" of [4] (picture of the singewettstreit)?
--Egel Reaction? 07:57, 29 August 2010 (UTC)
- I requested the colors in Kolonialpfadfinder.svg as there is definite shading in that PDF which matches the shading of the Cairo photo. But if you say black-and-white, okay. The Christliche Pfadfinderschaft Deutschlands one appears to match their website.--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 08:23, 29 August 2010 (UTC)
- @Egel: could you please leave my an email adress? --> Special:EmailUser/Jergen
- File:Kolonialpfadfinder.svg needs certainly reworking; the flag on File:Bundesarchiv Bild 102-12814, Kairo, Gruppe deutsche Pfadfinder.jpg is most certainly handmade like nearly all Scouting flags of the period. I'll mail a scan.
- The Namibia/South-west-african triangle is perfect (or verx close to it); bit I'd like to have a standalone version of it in black and white which was in use until twenty years ago (or so).
- Both pdfs don't show the original (and correct) design. I'll send something better. --jergen (talk) 12:53, 29 August 2010 (UTC)

Single Group links on Belgian Scouts Page.
Egel, Thanks for the feedback on my edit. Really sorry it didn't follow the rules - but I made it in good faith as you noted.
The strange thing is that to get details on the three British groups in Belgium you would have to go to BSWE, then drill down to BENELUX and then pull out the groups in Belgium. That's kind of why I made the edit - 1st Brussels and 1st Waterloo both have sites but Shape doesn't right now.
Anyway thanks for doing such a fantastic job at maintaining these pages.

File:Wa-Japanese kanji.png needs authorship information.
[edit]The media file you uploaded as File:Wa-Japanese kanji.png appears to be missing information as to its authorship (and or source), or if you did provide such information, it is confusing for others trying to make use of the image.
It would be appreciated if you would consider updating the file description page, to make the authorship of the media clearer.
Although some images may not need author information in obvious cases, (such where an applicable source is provided),authorship information aids users of the image, and helps ensure that appropriate credit is given (a requirement of some licenses).
- If you created this media yourself, please consider explicitly including your user name, for which:{{subst:usernameexpand|Egel}} will produce an appropriate expansion,
or use the {{own}} template.
- If this is an old image, for which the authorship is unknown or impossible to determine, please indicate this on the file description page.
Hope you're doing okay, brother!

Scout (Scouting)
[edit]Scout (Scouting), an article that you or your project may be interested in, has been nominated for an individual good article reassessment. If you are interested in the discussion, please participate by adding your comments to the reassessment page. If concerns are not addressed during the review period, the good article status may be removed from the article. AIRcorn (talk) 09:56, 25 April 2019 (UTC)
The file File:Katholieke Verkenners zw.png has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
unused, low-res, no obvious use
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.
Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
This bot DID NOT nominate any file(s) for deletion; please refer to the page history of each individual file for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 01:01, 15 July 2019 (UTC)
Orphaned non-free image File:Svenska Scoutrådet old.svg
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:Svenska Scoutrådet old.svg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 18:12, 17 August 2019 (UTC)

[edit]Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Asociación de Scouts del Perú national insignia 2013.svg
[edit]Thank you for uploading File:Asociación de Scouts del Perú national insignia 2013.svg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.
If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.
This bot DID NOT nominate any file(s) for deletion; please refer to the page history of each individual file for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 01:00, 27 September 2020 (UTC)
