Happy New Year

Wow, been quiet as this page is dead, dead, dead, though I haven't looked at hte archive of December to see what's going on. My internet time is library/free so limited and I'm trying not to wikify too much. But in recent months I've been pondering something I used to ironically joke about - History of Scandinavian immigration to Canada (could be more specific, i.e. Norwegian immigration see Endre Johannes Cleven as to why Scandinavians as a whole, although there are reasons why each specific case would warrant its own article, esp the icelanders and finns), and History of German immigration to Canada, History of Italian immigration to Canada etc i.e. as apposite to History of Chinese immigration to Canada, which continues to be a POV swamp despite my efforts to improve/critique/correct it. The reason I'm suggesting this in WP:BC is because of specifics like Hans Helgesen, Cape Scott, Hagensborg, Sointula et al, so at some point I'm starting a sandbox page which I'll post the link to here for others to add to; the Scandinavian page can be fun because it can drag in the Norse explorations and Vinland/L'Anse aux Meadows, Farley Mowat's theories and the old "blue eyed Indians of the St. Lawrence" observed by Cartier, and so on; but it was on the drive to Halifax that I was intrigued by New Denmark, which is the Danish colony in northern New Brunswick (on the Renous Highway) and its Danish flags and cheese shops, which I think might be pre-Confederation I'm not sure (don't know Maritime history well enough); in the case of the Germans there's their role in Nova Scotia as well as in the Prairies and especially in frontier BC. History of American immigration to Canada might also be fun, and more than worthwhile.....If there's going to be one ethnocentric history article about immigration, might as well give the other ethnicities than the currently politically-fashionable one; I'm surprised there's not History of Ukrainian immigration to Canada and Portuguese, Yugoslav, Japanese, East Indian etc. For anyone who thinks that all these are splinters of their respective Norwegian Canadian or German Canadian pages and would wind up being merged, teh same could be said of History of Chinese immigration to Canada vs. Chinese Canadian. One of the main problems with the Chinese immigration-history article is it's often not about immigration per se, which it should be by its title; anyway, yes, still a bit ironic in tone and maybe redundant, but given the propagation of Chinese-Canadian articles I think it's only fair to give due respect to people now unfairly lumped together as "European Canadians" (aka "Europeans"="white").Skookum1 (talk) 20:54, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

British Columbia Topics

  • The Portal:British Columbia is not under construction any more!!! The news is delivered via robot, and all box sections rotate content, so the portal is always fresh. Please add new GA or feature articles, images, biographies, any DYK, quotations, etc etc if you wish.
  • Does anyone wish to have a peek at other provincial templates named Topics of {IE Alberta / Saskatchewan) and create a Topics of British Columbia template for use on the Portal instead of just a link to WikiProject British Columbia/List of British Columbia-related topics.
  • The Portal:Vancouver has come down from feature status due to inactivity, but there were some awesome articles, and images suggested in its heydey. I can change the format to rotational and robotic news entry so the content on the Vancouver Portal looks fresh with each visit if it is desired. See talk page. Let me know if the format is desired to stay the same or change to be similar to the BC Portal.
  • The Vancouver 2010 Winter Games is upcoming and news relating to the Games and venue sites... Vancouver Olympic Village and the Whistler Olympic and Paralympic Village can be now added to the above portals if wished.
  • Should there be a new rotating box section added to either BC or Vancouver portal in regards to the Olympics?

Quotations

Tried to make a new quotation page on wikiquote for the BC portal, but it is a candidate for deletion article now. :-( See [British Columbia British Columbia on Wikiquote]. Does anyone have or know any notable quotes about BC by notable people? Vote closes: 05:00, 20 January 2008 SriMesh | talk 21:58, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
