This project page records Wikimedia initiatives carried out with the New Zealand Department of Conservation (DOC).

West Coast Photo Collection

The DOC offices at Fox Glacier and Franz Josef have several filing cabinets of archives, including:

1. Historic photos from the A. C. Graham collection, also at Hokitika Museum and the Macmillan Brown library, mounted on card with good metadata
2. Folders of collected photos by subject ("Okarito", "Franz Josef VC"), some out-of-copyright and with good metadata, some recent and with little or no data.
3. Folders of slides on West Coast or natural history themes, either taken locally or from Head Office slide library
4. Aerial photographs
5. Display photographs now taken down
6. Research notes two local history books: Vonnie Alexander's 2010 Gillespies Beach Beginnings (available at Wikisource) and Margaret Hall's 1979 Black Sand and Golden Years.

From December 2022 to June 2023 the Franz Josef DOC office is using Jobs For Nature funding to employ casual staff from Franz Josef Glacier Guides to scan these archives, assisted by User:Giantflightlessbirds, using an Epson 700 flatbed and Hasselblad X5.

Kākāpō/takahē

The New Zealand Wikipedian at Large, User:Giantflightlessbirds, worked with the kākāpō/takahē recovery team in Invercargill, December 3–7 2018, to improve the coverage of both species.

To Do

• Get kākāpō and takahē team to make notes on a Google Docs version of each Wikipedia article
• Improve each article following suggestions, using up-to-date sources (e.g. for kākāpō) including NZ Geographic and Stuff articles (and other sources: 1)
• Update takahē with Gouland Downs release information
• Contact Senior Takahē Ranger Glen Greaves for more info
• Ask design team at Head Office to export an EPS map of takahē location

Wikiproject kākāpō

This Wikidata project aims to create identifiers for all living kākāpō. The kākāpō data for cleanup prior to importing into Wikidata: Google sheet

To Do

• Proposed properties of DOC ID, a subset of an Individual Organism ID
• Propose DOC TCS category
• DOC to provide spreadsheet of all living kākāpō: name, ID, sex, hatch date and death/disappearance date, parents, offspring, and upload with Quickstatements
• Upload individual kākāpō portraits to Commons
• Approach museums for links to deceased kākāpō in their collections
• Link to any publicly-available genomes or gene sequences
• Possibly replace the hand-curated list of kakapo with one generated from Wikidata

NZTCS update

Threatened NZ species on Wikipedia currently display badges showing their TCS category, but the version used is years out of date. It is possible to display both the IUCN and TCS categories on a species' article, but this is almost never done. The category needs to be updated, and rolled out to NZ threatened species articles, especially Critter of the Week.

To Do

• Create new graphics for the TSC category that use D, R, Rel, and NU categories rather than the old SD, GD, Sp, and RR ones.
• Make subcategories for former and foreign translations of the graphics.
• Replace the current graphics where possible, archiving the former versions under a different name (so they can be shown in the status documentation).
• Create a DD status, similar to IUCN3.1
• Edit New Zealand Threat Classification System to show both schema, and explain the differences between the original and the current system, referencing SAP244.
• Update Wikipedia's TCS template to match the current Threat Classification System, showing the status as text and a link to NZ TCS (this will require Taxobox template editing by an admin: see 10 March 2018 request.
• Organise a public volunteer "Wikiblitz for Threatened Species" to update all the articles currently using the system. Check NZ species and display both IUCN and TCS categories, using the fields status2, status2_system, and status2_ref. A copy-and-paste reference list for the current TCS status for each species would be great, or a link to the unique URL for the online version.
• Check the species listed in the DOC Draft Threatened Species Strategy for classifications.

Critter of the Week

The Critter of the Week (CotW) project, which originated when Nicola Toki was DOC's Threatened Species Ambassador, now has its own Wikiproject at Wikipedia:WikiProject New Zealand/Critter of the Week.
