Category:CHEMVALID
[edit]- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: manual merge. (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 14:15, 15 August 2023 (UTC)
- Propose merging Category:CHEMVALID to Category:Wikipedia chemical data validation
- Nominator's rationale: WP:CHEMVALID leads to Wikipedia:WikiProject Chemicals/Chembox validation which itself is only in Category:Wikipedia chemical data validation so this seems like both categories are for the same thing. Gonnym (talk) 22:19, 7 August 2023 (UTC)
- Let's ask Andrybak why he created the target category last year, as the distinction is not clear. If merged, it should be a manual merge, placing the target into the current parent Category:Chembox documentation. If not merged, rename to Category:Chembox validation per the project page name. – Fayenatic London 12:57, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
- While the parent category is Category:Wikipedia editorial validation, I created the category in question during work on the tree of Category:Wikipedia template parameter issues. I don't think I looked too closely at CHEMVALID category, so can't remember the exact reasoning.
- As long as users of the chemistry templates approve, I support consolidation of these maintenance categories. —andrybak (talk) 15:08, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
- Manual merge to Category:Wikipedia chemical data validation (see notes above). – Fayenatic London 22:06, 12 August 2023 (UTC)

- The result of the discussion was: rename. (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 14:57, 15 August 2023 (UTC)
- Propose renaming Category:Theremins to Category:Theremin
- Nominator's rationale: The content of the category are not theremins. - Altenmann >talk 19:36, 7 August 2023 (UTC)
- Rename, it is a topic category, not a set category. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:36, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
- Rename per nom. Clarityfiend (talk) 12:05, 10 August 2023 (UTC)

- The result of the discussion was: rename. (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 14:57, 15 August 2023 (UTC)
- Propose renaming Category:Switch Mobility vehicles to Category:Switch Mobility buses
- Nominator's rationale: Switch Mobility is a bus manufacturer that only makes buses. As this is currently a "vehicles" category, it has to be in "Vehicles by brand" which makes this category more difficult to find. Therefore, I propose renaming to "buses", so it can also go in the "Buses by manufacturer" category, which more people will be looking for this category in. --Ferien (talk) 13:29, 7 August 2023 (UTC)
- Rename, as Switch Mobility is a bus manufacturer. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:37, 8 August 2023 (UTC)

Category:Wikipedians interested in the oceans of the Earth
[edit]- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: rename to Category:Wikipedians interested in oceans and seas. (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 14:58, 15 August 2023 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: New name is more concise and a lot of the subcategories aren't even oceans. 8 foo.bar("baz"); 05:41, 7 August 2023 (UTC)
- Rename per nom. Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 08:46, 7 August 2023 (UTC)
- Rename per nom, or alt rename to Category:Wikipedians interested in oceans and seas. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:39, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Marcocapelle How about splitting the category into subsections instead. Like one for the actual oceans, one for seas, etc. 8 foo.bar("baz"); 19:28, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
- Splitting between oceans and seas is also a possibility. Marcocapelle (talk) 19:52, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Marcocapelle Well, not by splitting, but redirecting the categories into subsections 8 foo.bar("baz"); 00:23, 9 August 2023 (UTC)
- That sounds like splitting. Subsections in categories do not exist. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:54, 9 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Marcocapelle It was a typo for subcategories. 8 foo.bar("baz"); 06:14, 9 August 2023 (UTC)
- Ah ok. But keeping a parent category for just two subcategories would not make sense. The two categories can also refer to each other by means of a "see also" note. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:18, 9 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Marcocapelle Good point, but other people can create more categories for lakes, rivers, estuaries, etc. 8 foo.bar("baz"); 07:52, 9 August 2023 (UTC)

- Alt rename per Marcocapelle, matching the contents better, as "bodies of water" extends to lakes etc. – Fayenatic London 12:40, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
- Alt rename No world other than Earth is known to have surface liquid water. –LaundryPizza03 (dc̄) 19:34, 9 August 2023 (UTC)
- Isn't the definition specifically for Earth only? foobarbaz 22:43, 9 August 2023 (UTC)

- Who said anything about surface? There may be a subsurface ocean (of water no less) on Saturn's moon Enceladus and on Jupiter's moon Europa. Clarityfiend (talk) 11:51, 10 August 2023 (UTC)

Category:Marble games
[edit]- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: Rename * Pppery * it has begun... 22:49, 15 August 2023 (UTC)
- Propose renaming Category:Marble games to Category:Marble video games
- Nominator's rationale: The category is only for video games about marbles, so calling it "Marble video games" is more accurate and stops potential confusion with any games played with actual, physical, marbles. QuietCicada (talk) 03:01, 7 August 2023 (UTC)
- Rename per nom. Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 08:46, 7 August 2023 (UTC)
- Keep, but transfer the video games to a new subcategory and repopulate this category with non-video game marble games - see Marble (toy)#Other, where examples like Chinese checkers and KerPlunk (game) are listed. Also Hungry Hungry Hippos, Labyrinth (marble game) and Avalanche (marble game), which aren't listed there. Clarityfiend (talk) 11:58, 10 August 2023 (UTC)
- Rename per nom and recreate Category:Marble games as a parent category. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 23:19, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
- If that's easier to do, then sure. Clarityfiend (talk) 23:53, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
- Rename per ZXCVBNM. (In typing this I realised our usernames are perhaps more similar than one might assume.) — Qwerfjkltalk 20:56, 13 August 2023 (UTC)

- The result of the discussion was: delete. (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 14:59, 15 August 2023 (UTC)
- Propose Deleting Category:Gödel Lecturers
- Nominator's rationale: Per WP:PERFCAT, WP:OCAWARD & WP:NONDEFINING
- The Association for Symbolic Logic hosts an annual lecture series called the Gödel Lecture and this category groups mathematicians who gave it. These speakers also receive an award for coming but this performance isn't treated as defining in the biography articles, generally getting mentioned in passing with other honours. The category contents are already listed right here in the main article for any reader interested in the topic. - RevelationDirect (talk) 00:37, 7 August 2023 (UTC)
- Background We've deleted similar categories for academics giving lectures here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here. - RevelationDirect (talk) 00:37, 7 August 2023 (UTC)
- Keep, destroying all the categories for lecturers? Yay? Wikipedia may be running out of things to do. Randy Kryn (talk) 00:56, 7 August 2023 (UTC)
- Delete, not a defining characteristic. It unnecessarily increases category clutter in the articles while especially biographies often contain so many category tags already. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:21, 7 August 2023 (UTC)
- Delete per precedents. Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 08:47, 7 August 2023 (UTC)
