[edit]Category:Purges murder in fiction
[edit]- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: delete (non-admin closure). Marcocapelle (talk) 13:53, 21 September 2018 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: Odd naming and contains only two films. It is also very similar to Category:Films about mass murder and Category:Genocide in fiction, and just too specific in general. Sandrobost (talk) 23:37, 11 September 2018 (UTC)
- Comment Why is this is the mass-murder category tree? Purges involve removal of "undesirable" people for political or religious reasons. The targeted people may be imprisoned or exiled, without being killed. The purges in the Soviet Union for example, typically involved sending the "undesirables" to the Gulag (forced labor camp system). Purges are another form for political repression. [edit]- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: Rename. Timrollpickering 11:03, 19 September 2018 (UTC)
- Propose renaming Category:iOS (Apple) to Category:iOS
- Nominator's rationale: per main article, iOS.89.139.68.161 (talk) 22:49, 11 September 2018 (UTC)
- Comment: note that Category:iOS (lowercase i) is the same as Category:IOS in terms of Wiki coding, so this should only go ahead if Apple iOS is very strongly the primary meaning of iOS or IOS. Note that there are several other meanings, see IOS (disambiguation), although some of them would not normally be capitalised. – Fayenatic London 13:31, 14 September 2018 (UTC)

Category:Songs written by Jedward
[edit]- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: keep. Good Ol’factory (talk) 07:31, 5 October 2018 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: We do not do songwriters by band name - which is the marketing term used to sell records. Members of a band can change, but the songwriting credits do not. Here is a sample previous discussion which also refers to other Discussions. Richhoncho (talk) 16:04, 11 September 2018 (UTC)
- So why not move to the pair's names??? Johnbod (talk) 04:11, 13 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Johnbod:. Because neither person has an article and there is only one song written by either of them at present. --Richhoncho (talk) 09:24, 13 September 2018 (UTC)
- As you've successfully argued in CfD before @Richhoncho:, the writer(s) of a song is a defining characteristic even if the writer does not have an article. Is this a SMALLCAT argument then? Johnbod's suggestion below seems reasonable: use both names and split if they write notable songs independently. StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 19:14, 13 September 2018 (UTC)

- So why not move to the pair's names??? Johnbod (talk) 04:11, 13 September 2018 (UTC)
- Keep/rename If you want to delete as "small & unlikely to expand", say so, but that is a weak argument. They have a double biography as Jedward, and deserve a songwriter category, either as a pair or using both names. It could be renamed if they split up. Specious nom. Johnbod (talk) 13:31, 13 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Starcheerspeaksnewslostwars: I would argue small cat if either a) there were a number of songs to be joined together, or, b) the songwriters had their own articles. If separated where would a searcher go, other than to the category? And no @Johnbod: it is not a specious argument. --Richhoncho (talk) 20:03, 13 September 2018 (UTC)
- You're talking about the exception to small categories, but WP:SMALLCAT says to "avoid categories that, by their very definition, will never have more than a few members", which seems to be your argument here. StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 22:07, 13 September 2018 (UTC)
- Not at all. My nomination is clear, the band name 'Jedward' is a marketing name, no more, no less (Example: Without mentioning marketing names who had no part in the creation of a song, how many of The Beatles were on the Beatle song, 'She's Leaving Home?'). If you think the two individual songwriters should be split into to categories, then do it, I will not be objecting, but I am still failing to find any WP advantage in any such action. --Richhoncho (talk) 23:20, 13 September 2018 (UTC)
- No doubt both names redirect to Jedward, so that is where a searcher would go. Johnbod (talk) 03:18, 14 September 2018 (UTC)

- Keep Jedward is the combination name used by the two brothers working together in music and and TV. A similar example might be Category:Songs_written_by_Lennon–McCartney which exists for the works those men wrote together and the have separate categories for the works they wrote as individuals. Category:Romani people and Romanipen in Romania
[edit]- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: Merge. Timrollpickering 14:24, 18 September 2018 (UTC)
- Propose merging Category:Romani people and Romanipen in Romania to Category:Romani in Romania
- Nominator's rationale: Romanipen (a redirect to Romani society and culture#Romanipen) is defined (in short) as Romani spirit, culture, law, being a Romani, a set of Romani strains. Therefore, these categories seem to serve exactly the same purpose and refer to exactly the same ethnic and cultural group. Note that Category:Romanian Romani people (for individual people) is not affected by this nomination. Place Clichy (talk) 14:20, 11 September 2018 (UTC)
- Merge (possibly reverse merge). We do not need both. Peterkingiron (talk) 10:05, 14 September 2018 (UTC)
- Merge (creator !vote) Note that back when this was created, 11 years ago, it looked like the category nomenclature was going to follow this pattern; someone decided against it, and created a secondary category, which has a more suitable name. S/he should've merged both back then. Dahn (talk) 06:31, 15 September 2018 (UTC)

- The result of the discussion was: Rename. Timrollpickering 14:24, 18 September 2018 (UTC)
- Propose renaming Category:Foster Farms Bowl to Category:San Francisco Bowl
- Nominator's rationale: The game has been renamed to the San Francisco Bowl, no longer known as Foster Farms Bowl. PCN02WPS (talk | contribs) 12:22, 11 September 2018 (UTC)
- Support. As a matter of fact, why is a discussion even needed? You could have just been bold, created the new San Francisco Bowl category yourself, and moved all the pages there. Tom Danson (talk) 15:35, 11 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Tom Danson: I did that for the Cheez-It bowl category, but I wasn't sure if that was frowned upon. I will do that with the champion seasons subcategory. PCN02WPS (talk | contribs) 19:09, 11 September 2018 (UTC)
- Support per nomination. @PCN02WPS: the subcategory Category:Foster Farms Bowl champion seasons should be similarly renamed. Jweiss11 (talk) 17:02, 11 September 2018 (UTC)

Category:Free Linux distributions

- The result of the discussion was: delete; place subcategory Category:Free software only Linux distributions in Category:Linux distributions and Category:Free software operating systems. Good Ol’factory (talk) 07:37, 5 October 2018 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: "Free" is ambiguous as most Linux distributions are free of charge, there is only one subcategory: Free software only Linux distributions and that being more specific, this category obviously isn't needed. - CHAMPION (talk) (contributions) (logs) 08:56, 17 August 2018 (UTC)

- Support, a category only containing one subcategory is not useful for navigation. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:34, 27 August 2018 (UTC)
- @Champion and Marcocapelle: shouldn't this be merged to some of the parents: Category:GNU Project, Category:GNU Project software, Category:Linux distributions?
- The sub-cat is already in the other parent, Category:Free software only operating systems. I also note that by Marcocapelle's rationale, that parent should be nominated for merger to its sole parent Category:Free software operating systems as it has no other content. If that is to happen, then do we need to keep the sub-cat Free software only Linux distributions, or should that be merged to the nominated category instead? – Fayenatic London 11:07, 27 August 2018 (UTC)
- With regard to the former, it should be merged to Category:Linux distributions, perhaps also to Category:GNU Project software, not to Category:GNU Project because that is the parent category of Category:GNU Project software. With regard to the latter, certainly agree with nominating Category:Free software only operating systems for the same reason as I support this nomination, while I am neutral about merging Free software only Linux distributions to Category:Free Linux distributions. - Alternative nomination:
- I am adding this as a formal alternative nomination, hoping that this will clarify the options. – Fayenatic London 11:24, 11 September 2018 (UTC)
- Support the original nomination to delete Category:Free Linux distributions, but retain Category:Free software only Linux distributions as a child category of Category:Linux distributions and Category:Free software operating systems. Category:Free Linux distributions is just too linguistically ambiguous, whereas Category:Free software only Linux distributions is much more clear a title. - Ahunt (talk) 11:37, 11 September 2018 (UTC)
- (I prefer merging Category:Free software only Linux distributions to Category:Free Linux distributions. As I understand it nothing but software is distributed. Rathfelder (talk) 07:21, 14 September 2018 (UTC)

- Nominator's rationale: delete per WP:OCASSOC. We usually categorize people based on conviction, not based on association. Possibly include the content of the category in a separate section of the Lockheed bribery scandals article. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:27, 11 September 2018 (UTC)

- The result of the discussion was: Keep. Timrollpickering 14:31, 18 September 2018 (UTC)
- Propose merging Category:Principality of Galilee to Category:Galilee
- Nominator's rationale: merge per WP:SMALLCAT, the category only contains the eponymous article, a redirect and a subcategory. A full upmerge to all parents is not needed, the content is already in appropriate other Crusader categories. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:20, 11 September 2018 (UTC)
- Merge per nom. The rest of the category (subcat Princes of Galilee and article Toron) can very well fit in [[:Category:Galilee}} and do not fit in other parent categories. Place Clichy (talk) 14:35, 11 September 2018 (UTC)
- Keep - we have an article Principality of Galilee and it is easily expandable as just done by myself to 7 articles. Can be doubled or tripled with a little more research and effort.GreyShark (dibra) 12:00, 12 September 2018 (UTC)
- Keep -- There is now enough content to keep. Peterkingiron (talk) 10:09, 14 September 2018 (UTC)
- Keep -- There is now enough content to keep. Laurel Lodged (talk) 20:09, 15 September 2018 (UTC)
- Keep Not a small category. A merge would also be misleading. The Principality included Beirut and Haifa, neither of which is included geographically in Galilee. Dimadick (talk) 15:36, 17 September 2018 (UTC)

- Nominator's rationale: Per WP:SMALLCAT. Small one-county community with just two entries. ...William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 00:19, 11 September 2018 (UTC)
- Merge per nom The town is 3-centuries old, but never grew into a major settlement. It has a smaller population that several villages. It is unlikely we can populate this category with many articles. Dimadick (talk) 15:41, 17 September 2018 (UTC)
