Six Korean name articles created today
[edit]- Won (Korean given name) (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)
- Shi (Korean given name) (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)
- Eon (Korean given name) (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)
- Si-young (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)
- Si-eun (Korean given name) (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)
- Si-eon (Korean given name) (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)
I am nominating the above six articles for deletion for the following reasons:
- They all rely on two sources, one of which is, in all six cases, a Wikimedia sister project, which violates circular referencing standards. The other is either a link to a dictionary or a government document regarding naming procedure.
- Due to the lack of reliable sourcing, there is little evidence provided that each of these names meets the general notability guideline. In any event, a government document detailing naming rules does not constitute significant coverage.
- The articles impart no useful information regarding the names and Wikipedia is not a directory or indiscriminate collection of information. Entries at List of Korean given names should suffice.
While the following two points are circumstantial and not reasons to delete in themselves, it is worth noting that all of the articles were:
- created on the same day
- created by the same user.

- Comment English Wikipedia has many articles about individual personal names. From what I have seen at AfD, they are usually kept if there are sources and also notable people who have the name, who are or can be included in the article. There are articles about people with the given name Won, or with Won as an element in a two-syllable name, who could be included in the article. Dictionaries of personal names are usually accepted as sources. I note that the Won article was nominated for deletion less than one hour after it was created. It doesn't even have a talk page, so the relevant Wikiprojects (eg Wikipedia:WikiProject Korea, Wikipedia:WikiProject Anthroponymy) would not even know that the article existed. Why not ask at WikiProject Korea for help with finding and adding more reliable sources? Why not leave the page curation tags on the article for longer than 38 minutes? - RebeccaGreen, I'd have no problem incubating these articles in the draftspace, especially if you or those at the WikiProjects you mention think there is hope of improving the articles such that they pass the general notability guideline and aren't just directory entries, in fact, I was going to move them to the draftspace but they had been in the NPP queue for less than a day and there are only six of them so the problem wasn't pervasive enough to do that, which is why I brought them here for a community discussion. Which one doesn't have a talk page yet? I'd be happy to set up the banners and notify the WikiProjects in question. Many thanks, SITH (talk) 18:04, 11 October 2019 (UTC)
- Hi SITH (talk), none of these six articles has a talk page yet (which is why the 'Talk' links after the article names above are red). RebeccaGreen (talk) 18:15, 11 October 2019 (UTC)
- RebeccaGreen, whoops, could have probably engaged the brain for that one. All done, WikiProjects notified. Thanks, SITH (talk) 18:21, 11 October 2019 (UTC)

- Comment. There are three notable Si-youngs: Lee Si-young (disambiguation). There are also two Park Si-euns and a Lee Si-eon; the two names should probably be merged into one list. I haven't checked the rest yet. Clarityfiend (talk) 19:51, 11 October 2019 (UTC)
- Comment I checked the new editor User:Mmntm7777's article page [1] and there are 2 more created on the same day that were missed in this discussion, Si-young (Korean given name) (a duplicate) and Da-hye, that you may want to add. I'm thinking about what can be done.--Bonnielou2013 (talk) 23:46, 11 October 2019 (UTC)
- Comment. If the nominator hasn't performed WP:BEFORE in Korean, then this nomination is obviously deficient as Korean-language sources are the ones one'd expect to have coverage. – Finnusertop (talk ⋅ contribs) 20:14, 13 October 2019 (UTC)
- Keep all, except perhaps Si-young, which is a duplicate of Si-young (Korean given name). These are stubs with credible sources. As Finnusertop points out above, these are the sources to be expected for a Korean subject article in English WP. And a comment...I couldn't help but consider the effect this (multiple) nomination might have on a new editor, who apparently went to some length to try and follow WP rules and regulations to create some worthy articles. I know pointing to example existing articles, which may be deficient, is not appropriate, but Mmntm7777 researched and added a second citation to a similar stub Si-won (name) which was created with one citation in 2012 and has remained undeleted since. For a new editor, the immediate inconsistencies they find here can be somewhat baffling and off-putting, until they understand that everyone is trying to do their best.--Bonnielou2013 (talk) 01:24, 14 October 2019 (UTC)

- Keep - All of these nominations fail WP:BEFORE, in that the nominator does not appear to have considered, at all, finding references. Draftifying is not a solution - you should WP:DIY. Also please consider WP:BITE when directly nominating a new editor's articles per Bonnielou2013 . FOARP (talk) 07:48, 19 October 2019 (UTC)

- Keep. WP:BEFORE was not followed. Further given name pages are essentially disambiguation/navigation pages for readers searching by first or last name. They serve a useful and practical and necessary function on wikipedia.4meter4 (talk) 17:30, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
