Lepidoptera references
[edit]I see you have been using Markku Savela's funet pages as a source for various Geometridae articles (e.g. Anisodes). Is that really a valid reference? It looks like a tertiary source: a notice at the foot of each page warns Keep in mind that the taxonomic information is copied from various sources, and may include many inaccuracies. Expert help is welcome. Assuming you are a lepidopterist, can you replace the Savela citations with the actual sources? AFAICS Savela mostly lists his sources but the pages are very long and I'm not a zoologist, so I can't repair the references to his pages. Thanks - Pointillist (talk) 22:33, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

The article Dirichlet form has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- not enough content to suggest any meaning at all
While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}}

Reward board
[edit]I don't suppose the offer is retroactive for ribbons already created? Seriously though, do you have any particular ribbons you would like to see, and what size/style (as they largely follow one of the patterns set by AzaToth, Zscout370, or Hersfold)? VernoWhitney (talk) 12:25, 30 September 2010 (UTC)
- Sorry--you gotta work for it.... As far as style goes, I like the Hersfold/Hereford style—brightly-colored, cloth-patterned. Zscout's are too computer-y (IMHO). Azatoth's are a close second, but the shading pattern looks like they've been handled by a crowd of people before posting. Going through the list for the ones still left to be created, I'd request (if I may) the following ribbons for starters: Barnstar of Diplomacy, The Civility Barnstar, The Content Creativity Barnstar, The Rescue Barnstar, The Redirect Barnstar, The Writer's Barnstar, The Audio Barnstar, The Modest Barnstar, The Teamwork Barnstar, The BLP Barnstar (selfishly), The Bio-Star, The Geography Barnstar, The Film Barnstar, The Barnstar of Liberty, The Fauna Barnstar, and the Biography Barnstar. NielsenGW (talk) 14:31, 30 September 2010 (UTC)
- So I've been doing some research today and apparently there's already a ribbon for the Barnstar of Diplomacy: Hersfold's File:Peace Ribbon.png, so named because at the time it was created the barnstar was called The Barnstar of Peace. VernoWhitney (talk) 22:36, 2 October 2010 (UTC)
- Belated congratulations and welcome back! I've grouped the new ribbons I've created at User:VernoWhitney/Sandbox2 (they are of course also on the ribbons page). Note that I'm still trying to think of something for the rest of the ribbons you requested, but I don't work nearly as quickly as Skibden or SMasters. I'm afraid all but a couple of them are in AzaToth's style, but I hope that isn't too off-putting. Cheers! VernoWhitney (talk) 11:57, 20 October 2010 (UTC)
- Oh, and I'm still trying to figure out a more pleasent BLP Ribbon, so my apologies for its less-than-stellar look at the moment. VernoWhitney (talk) 11:58, 20 October 2010 (UTC)

Barnstar for ribbons plz!
[edit]Hi there.. Reward board.. Ribbons.. 17...
Wikipedia:Ribbons I have created 17 new ribbons and edited one on commons, so 18 in total. The small ribbons. As User:VernoWhitney gets sorting, I will create even more of the simple/computery ribbons. I will also change the current small ribbons to match the 3D one.. (For example see how working man barnstar Shadow-ribbon and small-ribbon are not the same design.
Now the reward board aside, I really think that Wikipedia:Ribbons needs a general clean up. Some of the barnstars has 3-4-5 different designs for their ribbon, because someone just added a new ribbon without looking to see if one allready existed. I really like that there are both the shadow and the simple ribbons, but they should all look the same... Skibden (talk) 14:23, 7 October 2010 (UTC)

Ribbon creation
[edit]Hi NielsenGW, I've been developing some ribbons, now shown here. They aren't relating to barnstars so I don't know that they fit your reward board offer, but I thought I'd let you know about them. Regards, EdChem (talk) 06:50, 20 October 2010 (UTC)
- I'm just going to play a talkpage-stalker for a bit.. EdChem, if you see WP:RIB you will see that we have done a major cleanup of the page.. If you fell the need for making ribbons, there is a million of the "textured ribbons" missing.. It would be great if you want to make some of them.. (turning on whine) but please don't create non-barnstar-related ribbons.. It's really a hard battle to clean up the page, and if they are unused, they will most likely end up being nominated for deletion, like all the other non-used ribbons.. (whine off).. Cheers.. Skibden (talk) 09:23, 20 October 2010 (UTC)
- Skibden, I saw that the page had be re-arranged. I added separately at the bottom so the re-arrangers could put them wherever was appropriate. My first ribbon creation was the Signator service award ribbon, which is already being taken up by others. Rlevse points to the Awesome Wikipedian ribbon each time he makes that award. DYK contributor and GA contributor point to the relevant categories (serving as equivalents to the userboxes). I believe that ribbons like DYK contributor and DYK reviewer are relevant much earlier in many editors' careers than are barnstar ribbons. GA Contributor (for achieving first GA) is also a significant achievement, and worthy of recognition. More GA Reviewers are needed, and they get precious little recognition, so I created that ribbon too. I have some ideas for barnstar related ribbons, but I do not agree that ribbons for significant achievements in contributions particularly for early(ish) editors are undesirable. I think recording achievements as a means of encouraging editors is desirable. I do respect your right to a different perspective, of course. Also, for the record, I have no plans for other non-barnstar ribbons at the moment, though I do wonder about a ribbon for DYK Hall of Fame. EdChem (talk) 10:54, 20 October 2010 (UTC)
- That's all fair enough, I agree with you.. But the ribbons are alternative to barnstars, so I do not believe it is appropriate to create ribbons, without the barnstar being in existance.. As far as for creating new barnstars, it should be done at Wikipedia_talk:Barnstars.. I think it's fair enough that you get userboxes for being part of a specific team, but I DO NOT believe it us fair that you get a ribbon simply instead of a userbox.. A ribbon is an award, not something to show your affiliation with X project.. If every wiki-project had a userbox-ribbon, then every random person on wikipedia could have like 20 ribbons only with 21 edits (20 times adding your name to the project page, and one edit putting the ribbons on your userpage).. I hope you see/understand my point here? Skibden (talk) 11:20, 20 October 2010 (UTC)
- I think that you are missing the point that none of these are like userboxes that can be used whenever. Rather, like service awards, they come when the relevant criteria are satisfied. DYK contributor means successfully nominating an article you started or expanded for DYK and having it appear on the main page. GA contributor comes with getting an article to GA status. Awesome Wikipedian is like a barnstar, awarded by another user. Reviewer relates to completing reviews in DYK and GA. None of the ribbons I made are affiliation-based. EdChem (talk) 12:31, 20 October 2010 (UTC)
- Update: I have now uploaded ribbons relating to the Chemistry Star and the Four Award, in addition to the Signator Service Award Ribbon, the Awesome Wikipedian Ribbon, and the DYK and GA Contributor and Reviewer Ribbons. Ribbons shown here. Thanks. EdChem (talk) 03:46, 21 October 2010 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Arthur E. Morris
[edit]If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Arthur E. Morris requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}}
to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. --Nuujinn (talk) 19:24, 20 November 2010 (UTC)
Nomination of Arthur E. Morris for deletion
[edit]A discussion has begun about whether the article Arthur E. Morris, which you created or to which you contributed, should be deleted. While contributions are welcome, an article may be deleted if it is inconsistent with Wikipedia policies and guidelines for inclusion, explained in the deletion policy.
The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Arthur E. Morris until a consensus is reached, and you are welcome to contribute to the discussion.
You may edit the article during the discussion, including to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. --Nuujinn (talk) 20:25, 20 November 2010 (UTC)

- Thanks, Sven! Even I wasn't expecting 170 new ribbons to be added! And...the offer is still on-going, so maybe we'll get even more. NielsenGW (talk) 16:35, 24 November 2010 (UTC)
GOCE Drive – Final push
[edit]Greetings GOCE Backlog elimination drive participant, We are now coming up to the last few days of the drive, the last for 2010. Currently, it looks like we will achieve our target for reducing the backlog by 10%, however, we still have huge numbers for 2009. We have 55 participants in this drive. If everyone just clears 2 articles each, we will reduce the backlog by a further 110 articles. If everyone can just do 3 articles, we will hit 165. If you have yet to work on any articles and have rollover words, remember that you do need to copyedit at least a couple of articles in this drive for your previous rollover to be valid for the next drive. There are many very small articles that will take less than 5-10 minutes to copyedit. Use CatScan to find them. Let's all concentrate our firepower on the first three months of 2009 as we approach the end of this final drive for the year. Thank you once again for participating, and see you at the finish line! – SMasters (talk) 04:05, 25 November 2010 (UTC)

[edit]Thank you for fixing my disastrous typo. I discover to my shame that it had stood for more than 3 years, during which time I edited the article four more times, without noticing it. I must be blind. --Stemonitis (talk) 17:27, 3 December 2010 (UTC)
- I didn't notice it either until I pasted the main text in the Allacanthos article. It's one hell of a name for a "crab"-by family (pardon the pun). NielsenGW (talk) 18:58, 3 December 2010 (UTC)
