Sorry
[edit]Hi Marcus, I was hoping no Maltese would read my comments. Im sorry for offending you. Language is, in my opinion, the principal feature of ethnicity. Most Moroccans or Algerians for example have little or no Arabic ancestry yet they still consider themselves Arabs because of the language. Some Lebanese Christians, who speak the same Arabic as all other Lebanese, deny their Arabic identity because they claim to be descended from the Phoenicians, mainly out of spite for the Muslim majority in their country. One can argue that ethnicity is a matter of personal choice and of politics. Most Mihrazi Jews in Israel do not consider themselves Arabs. They probably would though, had it not been for the establishment of Israel and the Arab-Israeli conflict. If the Maltese overwhelmingly feel that they are not arabs then they are not. Nevertheless, one must not forget that Arabs, as a people are a multiracial and multi religious ethnicity who are held together only by language. It is not a clear cut issue and you must not take it as an attack. Ethnicity is just complicated. --Burgas00 19:12, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
No actually Moroccans do consider themselves Arabs although genetically they are mainly berbers. Cheers :-) --Burgas00 12:02, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
- Just to add something to your discussion. Morocco is a mix of Berbers or Amazighs (natives) and Arabs (conquerors). The official language is Arabic though Moroccan Arabic and Berber languages are the ones to be used widely (as well as French). Historically, most of the dynasties that governed large parts of North Africa and the Iberian peninsula for centuries were Berbers and not Arabs (i.e. Almoravids, Almohads, Merinids). -- Szvest Ω Wiki Me Up ® 12:02, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
Yes but one could say that Moroccan Arabs (as opposed to berbers) are fundamentally the descendants of arabized berbers...--Burgas00 18:38, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
- That's a debated point as mass arab immigration from the Arabian peninsula didn't stop until 2 or three centuries ago. -- Szvest Ω Wiki Me Up ® 11:51, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
License tagging for Image:Norman Lowell.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Norman Lowell.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.
For more information on using images, see the following pages:
This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 08:07, 2 December 2006 (UTC)
I see you have contributed to some Malta related articles.. Would you consider visiting the Wikipedia:Malta-related topics notice board to help with coordination? Thank you for your contributions. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Srl (talk • contribs) 03:35, 4 December 2006 (UTC).
Maltese words in Sicilian
[edit]Done. Your translation were all right, I've just added the Sicilian equivalent of "police" (polizia, as in Italian). --Angelo 15:08, 7 December 2006 (UTC)
- I revised one of the Sicilian words, "pulizzìa" rather than "polizia" which is an Italianism. The rest are pretty good. There are so many dialects of the Sicilian language and unfortunately no standard as of yet. So at this point a couple spellings and pronunciations could be debated:
- ripùbbrica vs. ripùbblica;
- 'uvernu vs. cuvernu, the ' representing a glottal stop, commonly found in place of "g", "c" and "v", for ex. rè'ula (Lat. regulam), pa'ari (Lat. pacare) and 'urpi (Lat. vulpem); and
- (c)uernu /(c)wernu/ vs. cuvernu.
- Thank you for putting the time and effort into filling the blanks regarding Sicilian! Salutamu...Calicchiulusiculu 14:59, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

Unspecified source for Image:Kmb.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Kmb.jpg. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. feydey 10:52, 8 December 2006 (UTC)
Image tagging for Image:Operahouse1935.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Operahouse1935.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the source and creator of the image on the image's description page, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided source information for them as well.
For more information on using images, see the following pages:

Your userpage
[edit]You state that the essay you've placed on your userpage "probably ... goes against Wikipedia's soapbox policy ..." - I'd go further and say it definitely goes against WP:SOAPBOX. Don't get me wrong - it isn't imflammatory or offensive or whatever - I just don't see why you've added it? --SandyDancer 22:38, 18 December 2006 (UTC)
- I was just bored I guess? Dunno... I wanted to tell other users something about me. Something interesting rather than the usual My name is X and I am X years old and I live in X and I like X music etc. But somehow it took the form of a political essay rather than a short bio. Oh well... Marcus1234 12:30, 19 December 2006 (UTC)
Image:Waterfrontvalletta.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Waterfrontvalletta.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the image description page and edit it to add
{{Replaceable fair use disputed}}
, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template. - On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Chowbok ☠ 19:07, 29 December 2006 (UTC)
An editor has nominated the article Qerq for deletion, under the Articles for deletion process. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the nomination (also see What Wikipedia is not and Deletion policy). Your opinions on why the topic of the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome: participate in the discussion by editing Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Qerq. Add four tildes like this ˜˜˜˜ to sign your comments. You can also edit the article Qerq during the discussion, but do not remove the "Articles for Deletion" template (the box at the top of the article), this will not end the deletion debate. Orphaned fair use image (Image:May 2005.JPG)
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:May 2005.JPG. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Carmelo Pace
[edit]Hi Marcus - First of all, thanks for your support re the Ghonnella article! I'm surprised that you found it! On the Carmelo Pace article, I meant to go back and put in references, but got distracted. I've added the sources of my info now. Take a look and let me know if you feel that the tag can now be removed. Cheers. lamato 02:34, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Borgolivier.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Borgolivier.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Malta related article at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/St John's Square
[edit]Dear member of WikiProject Malta, I'd like to invite you to participate in an ongoing Article for Deletion debate about St John's Square in the capital of Malta. We'd like your input about whether the article should stay and go (and if you want to expand the stub, that would be great too!) All the best, Eliz81(talk)(contribs) 21:22, 20 July 2007 (UTC)
Marcus - can you take a look at the revisions I have proposed for the Possible genetic links section of this page? I am disturbed by the frequency with which amateur observers assume Arab or Phoenician origins based purely on language (which is as ridiculous as the assumption that all Maltese must have English ancestors, because we speak English, or that Canadians have "French ancestors" because French is an official language of this country). However in the context of the Maltese people article, I am concerned about presenting all sides of the debate, in a neutral tone. I look forward to your comments. lamato(talk) 12:17, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

Maltese People: Regarding selection of people
[edit]I have noticed that you reverted the box to what it was before, with only 4 persons: namely Boffa, Mizzi, Strickland, and de Bono. While I agree with you that they did their own work well, and are honourable people, however I do not agree with the fact that you removed contemporary people. People nowadays identify themselves much more with Michael Mifsud (who, by the way, does have an article) rather than Gerald Strickland! How is he afterall, anyway? Go ask people out there who is Michael Mifsud and Joseph Armani and you would get cheers from Maltese and foreign people, and ask who is Enrico Mizzi and you would probably get offended for wasting people's time! My point is that these contemporary people are true samples of Maltese people and what they have achieved. Yes, I agree with you about Rachel Vella, and I will change that. Thanks for your time mate Tsum60 12:41, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
Good work as usual. If I had an award or something I'd give you one. I'd like to see some solid policy on this, i'm sure wikipedia has one somewhere. From the Malta/Maltese usage point of view it is pretty clear that the names are best as simple names with articles given just as interest in the article. An English speaker is not going to refer to Ħ'Attard. 「ѕʀʟ·✎」 19:51, 15 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit]Hi, I think it is important to note that it is primarily Malta Today saying they're a far right party in the article. MT is politically alligned with the left, so it may not be a neutral source on the topic. - Soprani 20:44, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use Image:Portomaso.JPG
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Portomaso.JPG. I noticed the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the image description page and edit it to add
{{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}
, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if not used in an article), per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Chris B • talk 12:16, 13 October 2007 (UTC)
Orphaned non-free media (Image:Enricomizzi.jpg)
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Enricomizzi.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot (talk) 20:29, 15 December 2007 (UTC)
Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Normanlowell.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Normanlowell.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 17:25, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

Changing the names of the Maltese village articles
[edit]There is currently an ongoing debate about whether the articles on Maltese villages should be given their English names. Kyarichy has already gone and renamed a bunch of articles such as as Kalkara citing these changes from an old obsolete paper and http://www.geody.com, even though these names are no longer in use.
The naming conventions clearly state that foreign location names commonly used in English should be used as the article names.
It would be appreciated if you could assist us in this discussion. ~ ► Wykebjs ◄ (userpage | talk) 11:00, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

File source problem with File:Royal Opera House.jpg
[edit]Thank you for uploading File:Royal Opera House.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged.
If you have uploaded other files, consider verifying that you have specified sources for those files as well. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged per Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion, F4. If the image is copyrighted and non-free, the image will be deleted 48 hours after 15:52, 1 May 2010 (UTC) per speedy deletion criterion F7. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 15:52, 1 May 2010 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Europe 10,000 Challenge invite
[edit]Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every country of Europe, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any country sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thank you. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 10:04, 6 November 2016 (UTC)
Nomination for deletion of Template:Maltese legislative election, 2008
[edit]Template:Maltese legislative election, 2008 has been nominated for deletion. You are invited to comment on the discussion at the template's entry on the Templates for discussion page. Steel1943 (talk) 00:44, 2 February 2019 (UTC)
The file File:Operahousedetail.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
unused image, age needs to be known to verify licencing tag
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.
Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. --TheImaCow (talk) 21:01, 28 January 2024 (UTC)
