Automating tasks on Wikipedia

Uploading hundreds of files or changing thousands of pages can be tedious. Limited automation is allowed on Wikipedia as long as it follows certain policies. The easiest way is to use AutoWikiBrowser.

Or, you always can grab your favorite scripting language and write a bot, but there is no need to reinvent the wheel: most modern programming languages have a MediaWiki library already written, there is a full list or programming languages and libraries here. Once you have written the code, you can request approval to trial run your bot. Once approved, your bot will be flagged, so it can be hidden from the list of recent changes. Alternatively you can request someone else take care of the whole matter for you.

Help me

[edit]

Mmy account is not blocked but I'm not able to edit. My work requires some travel to countries where Wikipedia may be censored. I am not very tech savvy so I needed a friend's help to get set up and it was working fine until a couple of days ago.Hickoryglaze (talk) 13:46, 7 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Please tell the exact message that appears when you attempt to make an edit. If it provides specific instructions on how to request to be unblocked, please follow them. 331dot (talk) 13:48, 7 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I would add that normally, using a VPN or proxy to edit is not permitted. However, if you are in (or frequently in) countries where Wikipedia is restricted, you may be able to request an exemption to this, please read WP:IPBE for more information; you will need to show a specific need. 331dot (talk) 13:50, 7 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
A need to edit? Hickoryglaze (talk) 13:52, 7 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
As stated at WP:IPBE, "Editing via an anonymous proxy can be easily abused, so it is only granted to trusted users. Examples of editors who may reasonably request an exemption include users who show they can contribute to the encyclopedia, and (for existing users) with a history of valid non-disruptive contribution." 331dot (talk) 13:54, 7 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I understand - I have already made a few contributions. I want to add more to these articles that I think are important and need some attention and I tracked down a source but now I can't edit. It isn't for anything disruptive or controversial ... Hickoryglaze (talk) 14:06, 7 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Then you will need to follow the instructions at WP:IPECPROXY. 331dot (talk) 14:12, 7 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
How can I contact a CheckUser directly if I can't edit? Hickoryglaze (talk) 14:15, 7 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Please pass my request on to one of the CheckUsers, I will check back in a few days. Hickoryglaze (talk) 14:42, 7 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
You should be able to send a Checkuser an email, a list of Checkusers can be found here. You may also use WP:UTRS to request the exemption and a Checkuser will eventually see it. 331dot (talk) 15:05, 7 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • To reply to your email, there are no specific contributions you need to make. Since an IPBE puts Wikipedia at significant risk, it is only given to trusted users who can show that they have a significant need of it to improve this. I can't speak for the administrator that declined your appeal, but they evidently do not feel you have enough of a contribution history to be trusted with the exemption. It isn't enough to just need one, you need to show why. 331dot (talk) 22:59, 15 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Kashk, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Charles Perry (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 08:30, 23 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2020 Elections voter message

[edit]
Hello! Voting in the 2020 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 7 December 2020. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2020 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 03:01, 24 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
