Hello Fishal. My name is Keyvan. I am a regular contributor to Wikipedia. I was away for a while and I just noticed your improvement to the article on Persia. I just wanted to say you did a great job and the article looks much better now. Thanks for your efforts. --K1 07:35, 6 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Sorry about that revert. You had not made the change with your login id and the history showed an IP number, and it had coincided with a series of other changes to Iran-related pages by an anonymous user. So without paying closer attention I must have quickly reverted along with a bunch of other reverts. it was not intentional. --K1 02:08, 2 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Internet history

[edit]

I replied to your request - not sure I have an easy answer. Noel 02:52, 4 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Now that I think about it (and I have no idea why I didn't think of this before!) I definitely would recommend Katie Hafner's book. It's written for the ordinary reader, but has all the technical details rigs. Of course, it's also book-length! Noel (talk) 15:08, 10 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Noel, thanks for your concern over this! I wish there was some way I could help here. There just has to be a way to communicate the BASIC technical know-how to the wider world; that is what Wikipedia is for. -Fishal

Sure; if ordinary people can't understand it, we have work to do, is my feeling. I have an idea: I translated the sentence you were gagging on (on Talk: History of the Internet). If you wander around that set of pages, and post similar questions on Talk: pages, I can answer them. In return, once you have asked enough questions to really understand things, if you would then help future readers by inserting appropriate explanations, etc that would really make it worthwhile.
PS: Wikipedia style is that people generally reply on the User_Talk: page of the person who wrote a message to them (that way, someone doesn't have to monitor a whole long list of User_Talk: pages - one for each person whom they are having a "conversation" with), so please leave any messages for me on my talk page (although I do monitor the article talk pages for most articles, so replying there for non-personal inquiries works fine. Noel (talk) 18:07, 10 Nov 2004 (UTC)
PPS: I'd be interested to see what you think of Packet and Internet Protocol, where I have already done a little work to make them a little more intelligible to non-technical people. (Not that they are perfect, by any means, but they do include paragraphs intended to be intelligible to all and sundry.) Most of the others, e.g. Transmission Control Protocol are pretty horrendous... Noel (talk) 18:16, 10 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Well, I don't know about "soon", but we are working on it! Noel (talk) 23:41, 10 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Internet pages improval

[edit]

Hi, I just re-wrote the intro section of Transmission Control Protocol to be hopefully more comprehensible to non-geeks. (The old version was a perfect example of the kind of "assumes the reader already understands all this stuff" problem you pointed out.) I'd be interested in any feedback you had about whether the new version is more accessible. Noel (talk) 14:42, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Attention to Time

[edit]

Hi, I notice you've flagged up the time article as needing attention, but you didn't give any more details. I came to it from the (apparently) fairly inactive Time project page. I am interested in working on calendar dates and historical time but could also consider more general issues, so maybe I'll give Time a look over too. If you've got any specific things you think need to be covered I'll try to include them, or work together. --FrankP 11:50, 16 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Gravity hill

[edit]

My family owns a cabin on Lake Michigan near Leland. Some time ago, we started exploring some of the local oddities. Gravity Hill in Arcadia was among them. It's good to have someone else helping with the Michigan articles. I've been thinking of doing a new article for the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore page--it's kind of lacking. Have you been there?

Also, I'm not too familiar with receiving and sending messages on Wikipedia. Do I have to make a new message on your User talk page to reply to you, or can I simply add a reply on my own User talk page? Thanks! Gsgeorge 22:14, 9 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Lutheran Wikipedians Category

[edit]

Dear Fishal:

It's been awhile! Did you ever think of joining: Category:Lutheran Wikipedians? 8-)

Bob --CTSWyneken 02:37, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've just created a new article under the above title to act as a main article for portions of the Martin Luther page. Since at the moment it is just an unceremonial dump of material from various places, I'd appreciate it if you'd take a look and give it some attention, if you have time.--CTSWyneken(talk) 21:39, 2 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image tagging for Image:Major William Jackson.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Major William Jackson.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. A request for your help with my research

[edit]

Dear Ben

My name is Jim Sutton and I'm undertaking research in the School of Library, Archive, and Information Studies, UCL.

My research involves studying wiki usage, the reasons why individuals use wikis and the benefits/disadvantages of using wikis to manage knowledge.

I noticed a contribution of yours to the article on wikis and I was wondering if you would agree to my analysing your contributions to Wikipedia. This will basically involve calculating how many times you've contributed to Wikipedia within the time period of a week.

I was also wondering what your reasons are for using/contributing to Wikipedia. I'd be extremely grateful for any feedback you can provide.

If you agree to my analysing your contributions and can provide any feedback as to why you contribute to Wikipedia I’d be very grateful. My email address is james.sutton (at) ucl.ac.uk and can be emailed at this address if you agree and have any feedback or questions.

I also have a survey online which I'm using as part of my research at:

http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/stqa7937/survey/

My Wikipedia username is Sutton4019 and my research is being carried out jointly with Melissa Terras at UCL. Her email address is m.terras (at) ucl.ac.uk .

If you have any questions please let me know and thank you for your time. Thanks! --Sutton4019 09:28, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free image (Image:Napoleon tetherball.jpg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Napoleon tetherball.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 19:03, 31 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, I am speechless - was not expecting this, particularly since I've been pretty quiet this summar. Thank you very much. I love doing this work here and in particular adding some non-text information and snazz to Wikipedia. The work is not all that hard, but yes I do try hard to be precise. For that, I have to thank all the many folks (indeed, experts) who've written back with corrections, suggestions, and information for me.
Quite a boost!! Thanks again! MapMaster 03:47, 8 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image source problem with Image:Jesus Bethany.jpg

[edit]
Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Jesus Bethany.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 06:51, 17 September 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Shizhao 06:51, 17 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Can you please inform User:Shizhao regarding the Copyright status of this image: Image:Jesus_Bethany.jpg? (Because I had uploaded the image on Chinese Wikipedia; However User:Shizhao intends to delete it if the copyright status and source of the image is not given). Thanks. zh:User:Dave

Fair use rationale for Image:EIU logo.gif

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:EIU logo.gif. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Zedla 03:48, 1 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Barnstar

[edit]

I also owe you a thanks for a barnstar. Thank you so much! I admit I've been secretly craving recognition for years. I aspire to grow up to be a WikiDragon or some such beast. In any case, you made me feel great. Back to business, I like your outline for Civilization (in your user space) better than the one presently in use. Nice work! I may continue chopping out dead wood from that article and turning redundant sections into links or groups of links, but with the eventual goal of having an article that more closely resembles the draft you are working on. I have an awful number of real-world responsibilities this week, so I may not get to it immediately (I'm using Wikipedia as a procrastination tool at the moment). I see you are a hard-working editor, and I look forward to collaborating with you. TriNotch (talk) 19:29, 27 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ȣ

[edit]

I see you have a history of working on the article Ȣ. I am looking at it from the project Wikipedia:Unreferenced articles where it is one of the longest {{unreferenced}} tagged articles that does not meet at least the barest minimum of verifiability. It has been tagged and completely without references since June 2006. It would be extremely helpful if you had some references you could add to the article to help support its verifiability and notability. Thanks for any help you can give. Conclusion: Image placeholders centralized discussion

[edit]

Hi. I'm sending this to you because you participated in the Centralized discussion on image placeholders that ended on 23 April.

That discussion must produce a conclusion.

We originally asked "Should the addition of this box [example right] be allowed? Does the placeholder system and graphic image need to be improved to satisfy policies and guidelines for inclusion? Is it appropriate to some kinds of biographies, but not to others?" (See introduction).

Conclusions to centralized discussions are either marked as 'policy', 'guideline', 'endorsed', 'rejected', 'no consensus', or 'no change' etc. We should now decide for this discussion.

Please read and approve or disapprove the section here: Conclusion --Kleinzach (talk) 11:00, 30 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please note this message conforms to WP:CANVASSING and has not been sent to anyone has not already participated in the centralized discussion.
