6 Kiss is the first studio album by American rapper Lil B. The album was released digitally on December 22, 2009.

Background

[edit]

Beginning in 2011, Lil B became embroiled in a feud Kevin Durant, then-star small forward of the Oklahoma City Thunder. Durant criticized the rapper in a Tweet dated January 29, 2011, expressing confusion and surprise at his popularity. Offended, Lil B challenged Durant to a game of one-on-one, which was briefly entertained by the NBA star before ultimately ignoring his challenge altogether.[1] This angered Lil B, which prompted him to place a "curse" on Durant, where he guaranteed that Durant would never win an NBA title under the curse. Despite making an appearance in the next year's NBA Finals, Durant's Thunder would fail to win the championship in the following years, including Oklahoma City's collapse against Lil B's hometown Golden State Warriors in the 2016 Western Conference Finals. Lil B would claim responsibility for this loss and insist that the curse had real life consequences for Durant. In March 2014, Lil B would release the diss track "Fuck KD" with an accompanying music video, with the song being viewed by over a million people on its first weekend of release.[2] Lil B and the curse would subsequently garner significant attention from basketball fans and sports media. Almost two months later, when Durant would announce that he was signing to the Warriors, Lil B announced that he was subsequently lifting the curse. However, when speaking with CBS Sports, Lil B denied that the curse was rescinded due to his Warriors fandom, but rather Durant's "heart and earnestness".[3]

In a positive review, Billy Haisley of Deadspin praised Lil B's handling of basketball related themes and topics, though pointed out that some unrelated songs on the project were derivative of his previous work: "...Hoop Life is a typical Lil B mixtape, from the celebrity songs to the ignorant, crass, and often great cooking songs to the positive and explicitly #based ideological songs... Other tracks, however, uphold the narrative promise of 'Gotta Make the NBA'... the "player on the come-up" stories have the most depth".[14] Phil Witmer of Vice considered Hoop Life an "essential" Lil B mixtape, acknowledging the basketball concept and dubbing the production "Bay Area-styled post-hyphy that's as warm and inviting as a summer day"[15]

The diss track "Fuck KD" was singled out for particular praise. The Fader considered the track "better than it needed to be"[16] while also praising the songs "NBA Live" and "Real Based".

Controversy

[edit]

Lil B was criticized for deciding to name his album I'm Gay, even receiving death threats at one point.[18] Many saw the move as a publicity stunt; however, the rapper has said that the title is meant to be used as the formal definition of 'gay' (merry) and as a message of support to the LGBT community. He states it simply means "I'm Happy".[19] After all the controversy and receiving death threats, he added "I'm Happy" in parentheses to the title.

Premise

[edit]

The series centers on "Norbert Foster "Norb" (voiced by Nick Bakay) and Daggett Doofus "Dag" Beaver (voiced by Richard Steven Horvitz). As recounted in the series premiere "Born to be Beavers", the two are kicked out of their parents' home once their mother births another brood. During their departure and subsequent search for a home, Norbert is showed to be a highly opinionated beaver who acts as the voice of reason and straight man to his younger brother's insane ideas, being quite selfish at times by bullying, insulting, or taking advantage of his brother (typically backfiring). Meanwhile, Daggett is energetic and childish, bearing a habit of over-the-top and sensitive emotions, as well as a well-known trait of name-calling and mispronouncing words.

Three 6 Mafia (formerly known as Triple Six Mafia) was an American hip hop group formed in 1991 in Memphis, Tennessee. The group was founded by DJ Paul, Juicy J, and Lord Infamous, with Gangsta Boo, Koopsta Knicca, and Crunchy Black joining later. The group's style has been variously described as Southern hip hop, crunk, hardcore rap, and horrorcore. The group is widely considered as being the main influence of horrorcore, crunk music of the 2000s, and the sound of modern underground hip-hop and trap music.

In 2006 the group won the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 78th Academy Awards for their song "It's Hard out Here for a Pimp" from the movie Hustle & Flow. The group released their debut album Mystic Stylez in 1995 through Prophet Entertainment, a record label they co-created but later relinquished control of in favor of a new label that they also created but had full ownership and control of, Hypnotize Minds. Their musical style—which initially featured dark, menacing beats with equally gritty lyrics—gradually moved to a less dark style. Two of their albums are RIAA-certified Platinum: When the Smoke Clears: Sixty 6, Sixty 1 (2000) and Most Known Unknown (2005), the latter featured their well-known single "Stay Fly", which itself achieved 2x Multi-Platinum (Double Platinum) RIAA certification status. The group's final studio album, Last 2 Walk, was released in 2008. The group last recorded in 2012. Three 6 Mafia's worldwide album sales stand at 5.5 million as of 2016.[1]

Legacy

[edit]

The group is widely considered to be influential in several musical genres, including trap, crunk, horrorcore, as well as the underground hip-hop scene of the 2010s. Since their earliest recorded material, the group frequently incorporated repetitious hooks and ad-libs, which were commonplace in 2000s crunk and 2010s trap.
