Regarding edits to Rio Dell, Sonoma County, California
[edit]Thank you for contributing to Wikipedia, Stepheng3! However, your edit here was reverted by an automated bot that attempts to remove spam from Wikipedia. [edit]Hello. Regarding the recent revert you made to Red hair: You may already know about them, but you might find Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace useful. After a revert, these can be placed on the user's talk page to let them know you considered their edit was inappropriate, and also direct new users towards the sandbox. They can also be used to give a stern warning to a vandal when they've been previously warned. Thank you. -MBK004 04:13, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

Representatives in infoboxes
[edit]You do have a good point. I intend to make pages for every district after I finished adding the representatives to the infoboxes. I wanted to add the representatives to be consistent with the city leaders and councils, but now I see your point. Socal gal at heart (talk) 17:58, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
It has been the convention for US lighthouses to name them as "XX Light" rather than "XX Lighthouse", since that is the USCG convention. Also, there is also a Fort Point Light in Texas. With that in mind, I intend to ask that the newly merged article be moved back to Fort Point Light (California). Mangoe (talk) 21:43, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
re: Use template/ Lake Pillsbury article
[edit]It is my understanding that either method is acceptable for Wikipedia. What is the reason you say to do the references with template? Marcia Wright (talk) 05:08, 25 March 2008 (UTC)
Thankyou for your reply, and you have a good reason-I also like the book-type footnotes in the smaller font.
I was unaware that this template produces footnotes that way. I am seriously considering this option.
The only downside is that as I am getting older- my eyesight is preferring larger letters :) Sincerely, Marcia Wright (talk) 13:28, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
Category:Transportation WikiProjects
[edit]Hi Stepheng3, I see that you have created a new category today and are linking articles into it. However, is it really needed as we already have a category Category:WikiProject Transport? It is not clear to me what the difference between the two categories is intended to be?Pyrotec (talk) 19:26, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
- I believe Category:WikiProject Transport is specifically for that project and its subprojects, whereas Category:Transportation WikiProjects can be used more broadly for wikiprojects related to transportation which (for whatever reason) don't consider themselves to be subprojects of WikiProject Transport. But I grant you that the WikiProject categorization system is a mess, and I'm unsure how it should be fixed. Stepheng3 (talk) 19:30, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
- OK I can understand that, but Category:WikiProject Transport has been in existence since 25 June 2004, whereas Category:Transportation WikiProjects was created today. It has 11 articles in it and it looks you put ten in to it; and I put one in, but that one was already in Category:Transport. It appears to be quite feasible to delete the new category and move the few that don't already appear in WP Transport into it. The main problem is that Category:WikiProject Transport is not listed in Category:WikiProjects, but that could be added in place of Category:Transportation WikiProjects. Pyrotec (talk) 20:04, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
- I'm working to diffuse categories and projects out of Category:WikiProjects as much as possible. It's not important to me whether the transportation WikiProjects end up under Category:WikiProject Transport or Category:Transportation WikiProjects, though I have a slight preference for the former. Let me know how you wish to proceed, and I'll cooperate. Stepheng3 (talk) 20:10, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
- Category:Transportation WikiProjects now has 10 articles in it, most of which were already in Category:WikiProject Transport; in contrast Category:WikiProject Transport has 16 articles and 20 subcategories in it, and it was set up almost four years ago. It looks like Wikipedia:WikiProject Connecticut Routes is the only one that needs to be moved. I suggest that the one category be moved and then Category:Transportation WikiProjects be deleted.Pyrotec (talk)
- I notice that you have added a category called "Transporation" (sic) to Wikipedia:WikiProject Gliding. Apart from the typo, I have to inform you that Gliding is a sport, like sailing, not a method of transport. I have therefore deleted this erroneous category. JMcC (talk) 20:44, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit]The WikiProject Barnstar | ||
For your remarkable efforts in helping WikiProjects better understand what articles are in the categories with which they work. Few people have even heard of all the projects you've helped out in this way, let alone helped them all in such a useful way. Art WikiProjects vs WikiProject Arts
[edit]You unilaterally reparented Dance, Circus, Music, etc WikiProject categories to Category:Art WikiProjects. These naturally are parented by WikiProject Arts and thus Category:WikiProject Arts. Please provide your rationale for your change. I have noted this at WP Arts. -- Paul foord (talk) 10:23, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
- Agreed, plus Category:WikiProject Gemology and Jewelry would not normally be considered to belong under either. Johnbod (talk) 10:50, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
- I thought it was silly for people to have to click down through WP Arts to get to the more specialized WPs, but I've since learned that thats how things are done in the WP category tree. I'm reverting all my reparents that took things out of WP Arts. It's pretty clear to me that jewelry is an artform, so I'm going to leave that where it is. Stepheng3 (talk) 16:20, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

Category:Australian rules coaches
[edit]Hi Stepheng3. I notice you tagged Category:Australian rules coaches for deletion. The only reason I hadn't tagged the category myself was that it hasn't yet been empty for 4 days. Incidentally, do you know of any way to tell how long a category has been empty? I only know how long this one has been empty because I'm the one who emptied it. Thanks. DH85868993 (talk) 03:10, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
- I don't know of any way to tell for certain whether a category has been empty for four days. I think most editors would look at the history, and if the empty category was created more than 4 days ago, they would assume that the category had been empty since then. What I sometimes do, when I'm feeling cautious, is flag the empty category with {{popcat}} and then check back four days later. Even that's not foolproof, of course, but it gives the creator a chance to realize that they forgot to populate the category, if that's what happened. Stepheng3 (talk) 16:40, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Special:Uncategorizedcategories
[edit]Good work at Special:Uncategorizedcategories. If you want a new project (since you pretty much cleared out the last), you might want to check out Special:Wantedcategories and evaluate each one on there to see if they should be created or not. A lot there do need to be created, but there are also a lot of misspellings, stuff retained in previously CFD'd/UCFD'd categories, etc. that need emptying. Some also probably simply need removal from a nonexistant category that shouldn't be created. Thanks, VegaDark (talk) 23:25, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

"Unnecessary" nbsp
[edit]In your recent change to Healdsburg, California (here), your comment said "rm unnecessary nbsp".
Actually (and oddly enough), it is necessary. Template:Infobox_Settlement says,
Names are automatically wiki-linked if an article exists; if the target is not the intended one, insert a character such as " " to disable the link.
Jim Wood is a common enough name that it links to a disambig page, but this particular Mr. Wood isn't one of the ones covered there, so he needs to be un-wiki'd. I've added the character back in (although at the end of his name this time). Dori (Talk • Contribs) 01:38, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Proposed deletion of List of defunct Pennsylvania sports teams
[edit]A proposed deletion template has been added to the article List of defunct Pennsylvania sports teams, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}}
notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Anti-dumping authorities
[edit]I categorized it under international trade category since dumping (in this context) can only take place during international trade. Another option seemed like WTO; but AD authorities are national institutions, not units of the WTO and AD legislation existed before the GATT. By the way, I also added countervailing duties (CVDs) to the disambiguation page. Hopefully, I'll write a separate anti-dumping article and improve those on subsidies and CVDs one day. Best regards. Hi, and many thanks for having a go at all those people not categorized by year of birth. I noticed that you were not duplicating Category:Year of birth missing (living people) with its parent Category:Living people, and I can see the rationale for that. (I'd been doing the opposite, partly through inertia and partly out of a sense that it still seemed to be the general consensus.) I've raised the question as to whether individuals should be categorized with both at the category's talk page, and would value your input. Dsp13 (talk) 12:04, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

reqphoto at Larkin House
[edit]Thanks for fixing up that reqphoto at Talk:Larkin House to avoid redlink to wikipedians. I posted a comment/question, related, at Template talk:reqphoto and/or the applications of that system for California counties. I am confused by the reqphoto system (or is it reqphotoin which is different?), obviously. Again, thanks! :) doncram (talk) 21:11, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
- Please don't change reqphotos in California to use the "reqphoto|in=Ventura County, California" format. As you showed me, the format "reqphotoin|Ventura County, California" format provides a simpler posting, with no irrelevant redlink or irrelevant bluelink to a list of wikipedians. I don't think that reqphoto|in= type formatting should be used at all. doncram (talk) 04:42, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
Cache Creek article
[edit]Dear Stephen, I do not have an acceptable rationale to offer. I was trying to determine the source of coord. at the title line and should not have saved anything. I have restored the article to your most recent version. I did however, learn a good deal about what a transcluded page is, what it does, and what it does not allow an aditor to do. The amount of transcluded templates in this article seem to slow down the load time of the page (for dial-up users at least) which is a concern. I apologize for this mistake.

I see that you have created this category and are busy populating it. You probably are well aware that you could be opening a can of worms, but are you aware that the location of many of these outfits is almost as controversial as their accreditation status? For example, Warren National University (which you listed) was established in California and later kept offices there after officially having moved to Wyoming. Then there are institutions like Honolulu University (not yet listed), which started out in California as Golden State University... This is just an FYI... --Orlady (talk) 01:50, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

- +
- + You asked why I blanked the category. The answer is that it appears to serve no purpose, since it is not populated -- it contains no pages.
- +
- + According to WP:SPEEDY, categories that have been unpopulated for at least four days can be speedily deleted. The way this works is practice is that when someone finds an unpopulated category that seems likely to remain so, they blank the page. This causes the page history to record that the category was empty at the time of the edit. If the category is still empty four days later, anyone can put {{db-catempty}} on the category, and within a day or so an administrator will delete the category. Category "Negro League baseball" to "Negro league baseball"
[edit]This is NOT an appropriate change. Who authorized this? Where is the discussion on it? Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 12:37, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
- I proposed a rename from Category:Negro League baseball to Category:Negro league baseball on Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Speedy at 01:52 UTC on 15 September 2008. The rename has not taken place yet, and since there seems to be some controversy, I am planning to initiate a non-speed CfD in the near future. Four of this category's subcategories have already been renamed through the speedy rename process. In each case, I was the proposer, and User:Vegaswikian was responsible for putting them in the work queue. Stepheng3 (talk) 18:28, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
- Your bot program has already renamed a lot of them. You need to discuss this on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Baseball before imposing this change further. Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 18:33, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Re: Category:Years in video games
[edit]Now that I think about it, the category should probably be renamed through WP:Categories for discussion. I'll move it there. Happy editing! --Silver Edge (talk) 08:12, 27 October 2008 (UTC)
BRD of WP:Categories for discussion
[edit]So, what I wanted to do was to encourage people who propose categories for discussion to familiarize themselves with the guidelines at WP:Overcategorization. Apparently you have some concern about this. Would you care to discuss here or shall we take it to the talk page? - Stepheng3 (talk) 17:21, 27 October 2008 (UTC)
- The reversion was due to a discussion at WT:CFD. My reversion unfortunately apparently undid your edit to the page. My apologies. - jc37 04:52, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
Amorrow
[edit]Amorrow is a major vandal and stalker of wiki users in real life. His category is kept deleted under WP:DENY. — Rlevse • Talk • 10:03, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
- If you say so. However, I don't see what good it does to delete the category and leave 79 user pages tagged. Perhaps you should rethink your strategy. Best wishes, - Stepheng3 (talk) 00:23, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
The category should not be deleted (at least not without a proper CFD); at least one article, Peter Chen, was previously in this category but was removed due to an (IMO) erroneous edit by a different editor. Thanks. SparsityProblem (talk) 21:09, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
- That's fine. These things happen, which is why there's a 4-day waiting period for deletion of empty categories. It would help if the category had more articles in it. - Stepheng3 (talk) 22:28, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
Template:Cat year nav music
[edit]This template is badly broken. See for example Category:2006 in music. Unfortunately the template history is truncated so I can't revert it, and I don't know enough about template syntax to fix the bugs. - Stepheng3 (talk) 03:26, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
- How is it broken? Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :) 03:30, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
- It shows the 1960's even though the year 2006 is coded. Also, it should automatically provide a parent category such as Category:2000s in music. - Stepheng3 (talk) 03:34, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
- Hmm... I'll work on the code. However, the parent category thing is weird, as 2000s in music shows it as being a subcat... Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :) 03:46, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
- It should work. See Category:2006 in music for the working copy. If it isn't working, feel free to drop by my talk page and let me know! :) Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :) 04:06, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
Category:Arizona League Dodgers players
[edit]See Category:Minor league baseball players by team. Eventually every team in the Arizone League will need a cat. Leave this one open.
- WP:ATA#CRYSTAL. This team hasn't even played a game yet, so a players category serves no purpose right now. Categories are easily created when needed. - Stepheng3 (talk) 19:03, 1 November 2008 (UTC)
Empty categories
[edit]I think you are making the process of deleting them more complicated than it needs to be. The way I do it is to simply wait 4 days from the report, and then go through the list and delete everything still empty. In your case, you could do the same but simply tag them for speedy instead of blanking every one first. For instance, the most recent report was run 05:37, 27 October 2008. As of 05:37, 31 October 2008, everything on the list would have been empty for 4 days. There is no need to blank pages and try to use the uncategorized categories report to see which ones are 0kb, and hence figure out which you have blanked (as I suspect you are doing, or at least looking through your contribs list to figure it out). Also, categories like Category:Images with no copyright tag as of 28 October 2008 don't need to wait 4 days from being empty, they can be deleted as G6 the moment it becomes empty (assuming the day it is related to has passed). Hope that speeds things up. VegaDark (talk) 17:07, 1 November 2008 (UTC)
- Hm... thanks for the tips.
- For categories I've blanked myself I don't use the Uncategorized categories report, I simply search for "empty" in My contributions.
- The process you suggest is exactly what I was moving toward with my archiving suggestion; I tested it out last night, and it seemed to work.
- On reflection, however, I think I prefer blanking the page and waiting 96 hours. That gives other users plenty of time to react in case they know of reasons not to delete the category, as happened recently with Category:Neustrashimy class frigates and Category:Jamaican people murdered abroad. Right now we seem to have plenty of C1 targets, and I don't sense any rush to delete these categories, many of which appear to have been empty for years. - Stepheng3 (talk) 18:36, 1 November 2008 (UTC)
If there's not a proper CFD why are you deleting it??—Markles 21:53, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
- It was empty and seemed likely to remain so. -- see Wikipedia:CSD#C1. Anyway, I didn't delete it, I blanked it. And then you went and reverted me and populated it, so all's well. Cheers! - Stepheng3 (talk) 22:25, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
- Thank you.—Markles 23:21, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

[edit]Thanks for your tip on Category:Soccer players from Washington (state) being speediable. I've moved it there; so the nomination and your comment has been deleted from the main CfD page. Just wanted to say thanks and let you know I deleted something you wrote. Good Ol’factory (talk) 23:57, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

Category:Educational institutions established in 1793
[edit]Hi. Just leaving you a note after I received a bot message. Thanks for tagging that for me. I created it by mistake a couple of weeks ago before realising what the correct category was, then it slipped my mind to request its deletion. All's well that ends well anyway. Cheers Paul Largo (talk) 23:23, 19 December 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for the note. It's nice to know what happened. I rather enjoy cleaning up categories, so all's well. - Stepheng3 (talk) 01:58, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

[edit]Would you be interested in becoming an administrator? You've clearly demonstrated a need for the tools with all your category work. Let me know and I'd be happy to write up a nomination for you in the next few days. VegaDark (talk) 08:06, 26 December 2008 (UTC)
