The Last of Us: Factions is the working title for Naughty Dog's upcoming multiplayer game in The Last of Us video game franchise. Initially intended as a multiplayer mode for the 2020 action-adventure sequel The Last of Us Part II, Naughty Dog announced that Factions would instead be released as a standalone title.

Development

Factions was was first conceptualized as a multiplayer mode of the same name for the 2013 action-adventure game The Last of Us, for PlayStation 3, and its subsequent 2014 remaster for PlayStation 4. In 2019, online support for the mode ended for PlayStation 3 users, and the mode was not included in the 2022 remake.

In September 2019, Naughty Dog announced that the sequel The Last of Us Part II would have no multiplayer mode as anticipated, as the team chose to develop the online experience as a separate project altogether. In June 2020, following the sequel's release, director and co-president of Naughty Dog Neil Druckmann clarified that The Last of Us Part II would have no additional content, implying that Factions would not be a DLC. In September 2021, Naughty Dog's senior communications manager Rochelle Snyder confirmed that development for the multiplayer title was in "full-swing".

Neil Druckmann released more details for the upcoming multiplayer title during the 2022 Summer Game Fest, revealing it would be "as big" as Naughty Dog's previous games. Druckmann also reiterated that the game would be a spin-off, with new characters and a story that would be separate from its main series.

Release

In a January 2023 BuzzFeed interview following the release of HBO's television adaptation, Druckmann confirmed that the multiplayer title would be the next installment in The Last of Us franchise. As of a February 2023 blog post, a release date has yet to be determined, with Druckmann revealing that more details for the title will be announced in June, in line with the 10th anniversary of the 2013 game.
