Axel Tuanzebe[1] (born 14 November 1997) is a professional footballer who plays as a centre-back for Manchester United. Born in Bunia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, he has dual nationality with the United Kingdom.[2]
Tuanzebe grew up in Rochdale, Lancashire, and joined the Manchester United Academy at the age of eight.[2] After progressing through the youth age groups, Tuanzebe was selected for the under-17s at the 2013 Milk Cup[3] and played in all five matches as Manchester United lifted the trophy.[4][5] He appeared in nine of the last 11 matches of the under-18s' 2013–14 season,[4] before signing as a first-year academy scholar in June 2014.[6] Then, in July and August 2014, he captained the Manchester United team that retained the Milk Cup.[7]
He retained the captaincy for the 2014–15 season, the first time a first-year scholar had been given the youth team captaincy since Gary Neville.[2] As well as captaining the under-18s, he also made three substitute appearances for the under-21s.[4] His performances during the 2014–15 season led to him receiving the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year Award.[8] He began the following season dividing his time between the under-18s and the under-21s, and on 31 October 2015, he was named in the first-team squad for the first time, named as a substitute for Manchester United's 0–0 draw away to Crystal Palace.[9]
