Vandalism on certain Disney pages, requesting immediate protection.

Hello mate, I've been noticing that some disney pages like A Whole New World and also Aladdin (2019 film) were recently vandalized using inappropriate pictures. Can it be protected properly? Thank you LizandJr8 (talk) 03:09, 1 June 2019 (UTC)

I've checked both edit histories; A Whole New World was protected by another administrator just a bit ago, and I've added semi-protection to Aladdin (2019 film). Premature ANI closure

I think the section concerning MS was certainly not played out, and a 72 hour block is very, very unlikely to have any meaningful effect on a problem extending many years. I think You should reconsider your closure. Qwirkle (talk) 12:45, 1 June 2019 (UTC)

Qwirkle - Nah, just remove the closure. No need to save my closing statement in a comment or anything fancy; it's not dire or important that it be kept... lol. You just need to remove the {{atop}} and {{abot}} templates from the top and bottom of the section, and you'll be all set. Hi Funcrunch! Yup, that's an edit I'd certainly block a user over. Please accept my apologies for leaving a "warned user" response instead of actually blocking the user. I just took a look at the timelines and saw that only one warning was left, and left it at that. I should have taken a look at the edits as well. Else, I would've caught this and you wouldn't have had to ask me what the heck is going on in my head... lol. The issue is all taken care of now; thank you very much for bringing this to my attention. :-) Please let me know if there's anything else I can do for you and I'll be happy to help. Funcrunch - That was my fault for not looking at the edits themselves, and I'm so sorry that I inadvertently treated the situation with such little action compared to what should have happened in the first place. I've redacted and even suppressed some revisions on the article, and I've extended the protection duration to be two months instead of two days. Thegooduser - When you're not logged in? No, anonymous users run off of a separate default .js and .css files and they can't customize those. You'd have to look at a browser add-on to do that. One thing to know is that browser add-ons (unless they come with options to customize when they're enabled or not) will typically run whether you're logged in or not or they'll run all the time - so do be careful. Add-ons can also cause other conflicts and issues - especially if you're also running custom Wikipedia scripts and gadgets on top of that. My advice is to avoid using browser add-ons that are designed to affect Wikipedia and how it displays in your browser. They're typically designed for people that read Wikipedia, not so much people who are editors. ~Oshwah~^{(talk) (contribs)} 00:21, 6 June 2019 (UTC)

NYC station article naming

Can you help me set up an rfc for this?

Essentially, the editors in favor of WP:USSTATION want to implement it in NYC.

Said policy has been enforced everywhere in the United States except in the NYC subway station articles.

The editors opposing the page move(s) constantly cite WP:IGNORE.

This back and forth has been going on constantly for at least 2 years now (with some arguments going back a decade).

An rfc was suggested by multiple editors as early as 2016, but nothing has happened yet.

Hello Oshwah, I am bringing this to you, as you have blocked this user before. They have continued to make unsourced edits after their previous block. I reported to AIV the other day for the continued unsourced edits, however it must have been declined as not obvious vandalism. I took a look at the diff you provided me above, and I noticed that the article involved is one that he/she created. Hence, I held off on taking immediate action. Have you created an ANI discussion regarding this user? If your reports regarding this user are being declined at AIV for not being "blatant vandalism" (which can happen), the thing to do next is to create a discussion at ANI so that it can be discussed and handled there. Forsure, usually my steps are AIV -> contact previous blocking admin (if there is one) -> ANI. I just hate bringing wrestling there unless it is a major issue, since sometimes it invites a lot of backhanded comments regarding the subject matter lol. I just want to see this user citing sources for their edits like everyone should, the previous block, multiple messages and even your well thought out personalized message has gotten us nowhere so far. STATicVapor - I completely understand your thoughts and reasons for being hesitant to start a discussion at ANI about this. ANI (in general) can become a heated mix and explosion of "blame game" arguments, battleground conduct and grudges that involved users just won't let die, incivility and personal attacks, and off-topic finger-pointing. Unfortunately, starting an ANI discussion is the next logical step from here given the fact that notices, warnings, and custom messages have gone ignored, and the problem only continues to occur. Given the specific issue involved with this user, an ANI needs to be filed so that it can be discussed and a solution found with as many users in the community as possible. This assures that we make right decisions, perform the correct actions, and we do the right thing. You'll be fine... I promise. Hi El C! These are suppressions from a discussion started a few days ago. An email has been sent to the OS team to get input regarding the content that was redacted and whether or not it should be considered something that should be redacted and suppressed. If we determine that the information doesn't meet the criteria, or if its determined that suppression is not the solution in this situation, the visibility to the revisions will be restored. El C - Sigh... I know. I know it is... and I'm sorry to have to be the one to make the decision and take the actions I believe to be necessary. Unfortunately, I have to put the content that needs suppression first over convenience in these situations (pending a discussion with the OS team of course). That's the curse of being an oversighter sometimes... there are times where you have to redact content and suppress a bunch of revisions that can step on the toes of many editors, and you can't discuss the content or any details involving the suppression with other editors on top of it. :-/ ~Oshwah~^{(talk) (contribs)} 12:00, 6 June 2019 (UTC)

Hi Disneyandanduniversalfan! Yes, your current account status does not restrict you from editing pages that are not protected. Global/attached accounts question

Perhaps you or one of the watchers know something about this (or where to inquire about it). How is it decided which accounts are attached to your global account? For example, you have 478 attached accounts. I have 33. Most of the accounts are to wikis in other languages and obviously the vast majority of editors whose 'home' wiki is en.wiki won't be editing the wikis in other languages. On the other hand, another long time user I happened to check has 150 attached, and various users who signed up for en-wiki some years ago have no accounts attached. Hi Enigmaman! I'll expand on what Clpo13 said above. If you create an account today on any project (and not back before globalization and unification of logins were a thing), you create both a local account on that project as well as a global account. From there, when you visit another project for the first time (say, for example: you created your new account on the English Wikipedia and you visit the Simple English Wikipedia for the first time), a local account is created on the project from the information stored in your global account, and the information is all synchronized up. So if you change the password on your English Wikipedia account, it updates the global account password, which syncs with all of the other local accounts. Ah, most of them were attached on March 15, 2015 for me... which I think is the day that the SUL finalisation went into effect (basically the task that forcibly renamed all local accounts where another local account on a different project had the same username, then afterwards took all local accounts created before globalization was a thing and turned them into global accounts), but I could be wrong about that... ~Oshwah~^{(talk) (contribs)} 20:06, 6 June 2019 (UTC)

Enigmaman - How SUL and account globalization works under the hood is a bit funky but works well. The transition that was made between before when SUL and globalization became a default thing and afterwards was by far even more funkier than that... and the tasks and modifications that had to be performed for old accounts so that they were transitioned over to SUL and globalization was even more funkier than that! Disneyandanduniversalfan - Since you're brand new to Wikipedia, I highly recommend that you go through and complete Wikipedia's new user tutorial before you make any more edits or take on any major tasks around here. It will provide you with many helpful walkthroughs, guides, interactive lessons, and other information that will be very helpful to you. I remember that we talked about your power settings and how system standby or sleep mode may definitely be causing the issues. Did you change your power settings to disable automatic system standby while the workstation is plugged in? ~Oshwah~^{(talk) (contribs)} 00:33, 7 June 2019 (UTC)

If I plug in the Pc, it sometimes dies, (and goes from 29% to 5% on sleep mode in 20 minutes on battery) The workstation will never sleep when plugged in only when the lid is closed, I tried locking it with the lid up, and sometimes it will work, sometimes it won't if the pc sleeps. I still think that there's a power issue that's causing things to stop working after you do something and the laptop enters a power saving state or standby mode. This will stop the WiFi or LAN device in the process in order to conserve power consumption. This can cause issue with many things, but I think that it applies in your situation. In Windows 10, go to your power options and make sure that the profile or plan is set to "High performance". Then click on "Change when the computer sleeps" or go to the setting to change your standby and sleep options. Set it to disabled on both AC and battery (for now so that we eliminate it completely from the equation). It will not kill your battery if it's plugged in. If you have Windows Updates to install, you need to reboot and install them all. This could also be part of the cause of your problems. Having pending Windows Updates modifies some events and settings to prepare for the installation. Huggle

When patrolling recent changes with Twinkle, it's easy to see a diff of the changes and the article with the changes made/the changes implemented in the article. On Huggle, it just shows the diff and not the article with the changes made. I understand that I can see article with the new changes made in the browser, but is it possible to see the article with the changes made within Huggle without going into the browser? Hi Interstellarity! Thanks for leaving me a message here with your question! Huggle obviously allows you to see the diff of the current edit in the queue that you're patrolling and evaluating, but as far as I know - there isn't a way to implement the ability to see both a diff and the latest version of the page at the same time within the interface. However, if you press the shortcut keys ALT + O while looking at a diff in Huggle, the window will open the current revision of the page that you're looking at. You can also press the O key in order to have Huggle open the diff in your external browser. Now, I have three monitors connected to my computer, and I use all of them while I'm patrolling recent changes using Huggle. Obviously, I'm not expecting you to have that kind of a setup. However, if you have two monitors connected to your computer, it will make things much easier. Have Huggle open on one monitor, and then have your primary internet browser open on the other. This way, when you use the keyboard shortcuts to open anything in your browser from Huggle, it's displayed on the other. This makes the overall workflow of using Huggle to review diffs and investigate problems a much smoother one. Please let me know if you have any more questions regarding Huggle and how to use it to the fullest extent, and I'll be happy to answer them and help you. :-) I hope that I was able to at least provide you with a partial solution that will give you the view and workflow that you're looking for. I'll also do some digging for you and see if there's a way to do this that I'm not thinking of. Interstellarity - Okay, thanks for confirming that for me. I just wanted to make sure that I was reading your message correctly. Also, I apologize for the delay responding to your message here; I was busy with work and a few other things and I'm just now getting all caught up with my messages here. ;-) I don't think there's a view that you can enable that will do this. The closest I can give you as far as an answer goes is to have you take a look at the keyboard hotkeys for Huggle and see if one of those will work for you. The issue is that I did find a shortcut that will open the current page in that view (ALT+O), there isn't a shortcut key to go back to the diff view. You'd have to go back to the previous diff (which updates that window in Huggle), then go forward to return to the current diff (which will display the diff view again). It's not an optimal way to do this by any means, but it's at least something you can give a try. If I didn't recommend this in my previous response, I highly recommend that you visit Huggle's feedback page and request that they consider implementing a way to develop such a view (or at least provide a hotkey for users to go back to the current item's diff view). This will at least get the idea out there and to the people who can actually develop it. If I figure out an easier way to accomplish what you're asking for, I'll make sure to update you. Hi Kante4! Thanks for leaving me a message here with your questions and concerns. I was just about to reach out to you on your user talk page about this, so you saved me the time by contacting me directly... lol ;-) Since this transfer is a true event that's supported by reliable sources, the edits and reverts being made to the article by everyone involved is over a content-related matter, and not something where repeated back-and-fourth reverts would be exempt from 3RR or what would be considered as edit warring (like vandalism, BLP violations, violations of copyright, etc). In the future, when something like this blows up on an article and becomes an all-out battle between many users to add the information, then have someone else remove it, then to have someone revert it back, and on and on and on.... (basically what's been happening on that article today, lol).... it's best to not let yourself get sucked into adding to the mess by making reverts like the others were doing and start edit warring yourself. It just "adds more poo to the pile" and puts you in a position where you could be blocked for being a participant in the edit warring mess. Just save yourself the effort, the time, and the trouble - and start a discussion on the article's talk page and ping the other users involved. If editors are blatantly edit warring, and it's currently happening and in progress, report those users by filing at report at WP:AN3 after you've finished opening a discussion. You did the right thing by adding a request to WP:RFPP and asking for protection to be applied to the article. That's how the issue was able to be resolved; an administrator (well... me... lol) protected the article and directed everyone involved to take the dispute to the article's talk page. Next time, keep yourself in the back row... even if you believe or "know" that your (or another user's) particular revision is the correct one. It just keeps you out of trouble, and if the edit warring is bad and blatant enough and being caused by many editors, it's not like your reverts are going to make a big difference anyways... someone else will just revert it... so it's not worth the trouble. ;-) Please let me know if you have any more questions or concerns, and I'll be happy to answer them and help you. Thanks again for coming to me directly and for being so willing to discuss what happened. I would think that once reliable sources show that the information is true, that it's okay to add it to the article. Hey Oshwah, I'm currently involved in a deletion discussion involving Pr12402 where they are repeatedly refusing to get the point (or possibly just don't understand despite having had basic policy patiently explained to them multiple times), not cooperating with other editors, and arguably inappropriately canvassed me to the conversation. There's also a previous interaction that I had with them after PRODing an article they had created (here and here) that would establish that they are not new to disruptive behavior and failures to listen. Edit warring is disruptive behavior that is prohibited by Wikipedia policy. You're expected to refrain from edit warring, and discuss any disputes with the editors involved on the article's talk page per Wikipedia's dispute resolution protocol. Failing to do this can result in being blocked. I always give editors the benefit of the doubt by default; hence, I don't believe that you were purposefully intending on being disruptive or causing harm or disrepute to the article content. However, even edits made in good faith that are problematic can be disruptive and lead to administrative action if the issues continue and do not stop. (edit conflict) Willbb234 - Twinkle is a gadget that adds a bunch of new and extra menu items to the top of each page. These new items will open a Twinkle form and will perform the task for you automatically. I highly recommend using Twinkle; it takes all of the tediousness out of having to manually edit pages, paste templates, and perform multiple steps in order to accomplish tasks, file requests, warn users, report users to noticeboards, and many other things. For example: nominating an article for an AFD discussion. Instead of having to manually perform all of these steps in order to properly add and start a new AFD discussion, you can just choose "AFD" from the Twinkle menu, fill in the options, and press 'submit' - and Twinkle will perform all of those steps and start the AFD discussion for you. It will save you significant time and frustration over time as you use it. :-) If you have any specific questions about Twinkle, let me know and I'll be happy to answer them. User who has never edited here thanks me for a talk page edit

Hey Oshwah. I'm a bit suspicious of the editor Sixtocorbo. They just thanked me for my removal of a talk page message from a bot, and they registered in February 2010, but have made very few edits to any Wiki that I can see (edit: they have apparently made 33 edits to the Spanish Wiki). They apparently only registered their username on Commons less than a week ago, and we know who's had a history there who still follows me... Also, the bot was notifying me of an image I uploaded to a page the user I'm referring to created, which makes me even more suspicious that it's a sock account of this user. Your assumption and your message here is incorrect. I protected Todd Swift because of the high number of unreferenced and poorly referenced edits that were occurring on that article that were violations of Wikipedia's biographies of living persons policy (or BLP for short). This policy mandates that any and all edits that add content to a BLP article that are potentially contentious or controversial in nature must cite a reliable source that meets all of the requirements outlined here. Edits that fail to do this are to be removed immediately and on sight. Due to the high number of edits that were in violation of this policy, I protected the article to prevent further violations and disruptive edits. As I just said, yes he has, just this week, and it has been deleted. Probably half of his edit history has been deleted so it's invisible. So he's just been slipping through the cracks of several reports over the months. Smuckola - Admins can see deleted contributions by a user, yes. I just didn't look there. ;-) It looks like their contributions have stopped since June 11. I just left the user a warning for the repeated creation of inappropriate pages on their user talk page. 1972 Genocide of Burundian Hutus

Hello I saw that a page with this title was redlinked on List of genocides by death toll which seemed like something need remedying! Went to create a new page for it and saw that a page under the title was deleted by you in May 2019. Just wondering what led to that before I do anything else? Hi AmplifyWiki! Thanks for leaving me a message here regarding the 1972 Genocide of Burundian Hutus article. I'll be more than happy to answer your questions and help you with it. :-) The article was deleted under G5 of Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion. In short, a user created this article while in violation of the current block that's set on their original account. They purposefully evaded their block and was using a different account in order to be deceptive and avoid being caught (again). This is why the article was deleted. However, I took a look at the deleted content and I believe that, while rules were broken that would call for a G5 deletion, it's not mandatory that we do this. Instead of giving the sock user credit and awarding them for violating Wikipedia's policies, I added a dummy edit in order to create a revision that would serve as the latest one, then I performed a partial restore with that revision only. If you take a look at the article now, you should see that there's now content available. You're free to edit and modify the article as you wish, just as you would any other article. :-) Please let me know if you have any more questions or concerns, and I'll be happy to help you further. Issue with account

This account recently edit warred (initial insertion plus two reversions after warned not to do it) to insert garbage into a BLP. Enigmaman - It applies regardless of how the user is editing Wikipedia, whether it be anonymously or through a registered account. Applying administrative action toward a user when the disruption is not actively or currently occurring is discouraged by the community. This is due to the fact that the line starts to become fuzzy in relation to WP:BLOCKP and whether or not the block is still considered preventative at that point. The threshold for that line is different depending on the issue and the offense, as well as how severe the offenses are. But in this case, we don't need to run toward action. Vandalism

To be brought to the immediate attention of Oshwah ... Hello Oshwah. it has been a long time since we had talked. However, this is not a fun message. A user was vandalizing the dumplings wikipedia page. I reverted those edits, but before, the main template was clearly saying "Pigs" instead of "Dumplings". Also, the caption read "Donald duck" instead of "Dumplings were invented in china". I have reverted those edits but just to be sure, we might want to temporarily put a silver lock on that page as a precaution as the user was not logged in. Hi Thatphatguy! Thanks for leaving me a message here regarding the vandalism that was occurring on the Dumpling Wikipedia article. It looks like the disruption has stopped since late yesterday and hasn't continued onto today, so I'm willing to bet that what you were seeing was just vandalism by some kids from a school or similar institute, and it stopped due to them leaving the lab or computer area that they were occupying. Since the disruption seems to have stopped, I'm going to hold off on taking any action at this time. Hi AR.Dmg, and thanks for leaving me a message here with your concerns and your request for assistance. I'll be happy to point you in a few directions so that you'll have a much easier time with reverting vandalism and disruption. It looks like you have Twinkle enabled, which will make performing tasks such as adding requests, reports, warnings, notes, and other items much easier to do. Have you looked through the ultimate guide to recent changes patrolling? This page will provide you with a lot of guides, tips, advice, tools and scripts to try out, and many other pieces of information that you'll find to be very useful. Wikipedia's Counter-Vandalism Unit page also has a bunch of useful information that you should read through as well. Their tools page also lists a bunch of great tools and scripts that will help make patrolling, locating, and reverting vandalism a very easy and fun task. Give these pages a read-through, and give the tool pages a look as well. You'll benefit greatly by implementing extra tools and scripts that you're comfortable with and find to be helpful to you, and using them to help locate and revert vandalism.

As far as user rights are concerned (autopatrolled, pending changes reviewer, and rollback), each user right has different requirements before an admin will grant and assign them to you. The autopatrolled user right is only given to users who regularly create articles and who demonstrate familiarity with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, especially those on biographies of living persons, copyrights, verifiability and notability. The autopatrolled user right does not affect your ability to view, edit, create, or do anything technical at all on Wikipedia. It only automatically marks your page creations as 'patrolled' on new page logs and related pages so that other users won't need to look through them and mark them as patrolled manually. It looks like you do regularly create pages, but I'm concerned with the number of image notices you have on your user talk page regarding non-free images. Before anyone could consider you for being a user that's autopatrolled, this issue needs to be addressed first (as Geniac pointed out to you on your user talk page a couple of days ago). You need to read and understand Wikipedia:Non-free content, and demonstrate this understanding by not receiving any more notices on your user talk page for at least a few months before giving the autopatrolled flag would be even considered.

I do note that you have experience with reverting vandalism, as I've seen from your contributions. However, reverting vandalism is only part of what you should be doing if you want to be trusted with the rollback permissions. You also need to warn users on their user talk pages when they add vandalism or disruption to Wikipedia, so that they're given fair notice and opportunities to stop. I also see that you haven't reported any repeat offenders to Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism if they've continued being disruptive and after being sufficiently warned. This is also something you need to start doing, and what admins want to see a consistent history of you doing properly, before they'd consider you for the rollback user rights. These rights are given to users only after they've demonstrated a high level of proficiency and trust in these areas, since rollback not only gives you the ability to revert all the edits made to an article by an editor with a single click and without any confirmation, but having rollback also grants you access to powerful tools such as Huggle and other anti-vandalism programs that only allow users with the rollback user rights to access them.

Given your overall experience on Wikipedia and your commitment to keeping disruption and vandalism removed from articles and pages, I have no problem with granting you the pending changes reviewer rights, and will do so momentarily. Once you feel that you've met the necessary requirements for the other user rights, you can request them by visiting Wikipedia:Requests for permissions and adding yourself to the relevant list. Make sure to only request user rights that you think you meet the requirements for and will actually use in order to improve Wikipedia. Administrators who believe that users are requesting a bunch of user rights simply to "hat collect" (or request user rights for the simple purpose of just "having them") will not grant anything. You're supposed to request user rights after you've demonstrated the need for them and you meet the requirements from your editing history, not beforehand and with the promise that you'll meet the requirements and use them properly. It doesn't work that way. :-)

I hope that my response has provided you with a lot of help, links to good pages, and information that you're looking for. Give those vandalism patrol and anti-vandalism tool pages a read-through, try out some programs and scripts to see if they'll help you with patrolling, reverting, warning, and reporting users, and give the permissions level page a look-through as well, so that you'll understand the requirements for the ones you asked about, and how each of them function. Hi John Maynard Friedman, and thanks for the message! This IP is part of a range that I had to block due to repeated vandalism and disruption from multiple IP addresses within that range. If you take a look at the range's contributions, you'll see the numerous edits that were being made to Biddick Academy and by at least three different IPs from within that IP range. Not to worry; the block is only for 36 hours. If innocent users who are the result of collateral damage from that range wish to avoid this in the future, they just need to create an account when the IP range block expires. Then they won't be affected should the range need to be blocked again. In the diff I provided, the IP actually admits to an agenda, "...every statement here is obviously agenda driven..I have an agenda but I admit it." I was busy this week with work and other things. :-) No worries; I don't blame you one bit for avoiding noticeboards if you can help it. Some noticeboards, like AIV, AN3, UAA, AN, ANINT, BN, etc aren't that bad and usually aren't too "drama-ridden". If you avoid all noticeboards because of the negative impressions or feelings that you got from ANI, I assure you that nearly all other noticeboards (like the ones I listed) don't usually get that bad, though once in awhile someone will bring all of it with them. Regarding the IP user you reported: Lets keep an eye on them for now, and if things continue to appear as if they have a strong POV, a single-issue or single-purpose agenda, or possible even a COI - let me know and I'll look into things further. Hi FlightTime! Thanks for leaving me a message here with your concerns about this account. The user's comment that you provided definitely reads off as a terrible excuse to me, if not a complete fabrication. Regardless, we should take this comment (as well as any comment that states that someone's own account was compromised) seriously, and we should have the user create a new account that's secure and has a different password. I know that the account is well beyond stale now, which in most cases means that blocking it isn't necessary. However, when it comes to security-related concerns in relation to an account, we should be doing our diligence to close any open risks when possible. Hence, I went ahead and soft-blocked the account as "compromised" and indicated so in the reason (along with the diff), and I'll leave a note on the user's talk page and explain the situation. The soft block will allow the user to create a new account any time he/she wishes, or simply edit anonymously if they wish to do that instead. I think that this is the best solution that resolves any security risk while allowing the affected user to continue editing (either with a new account or anonymously) if he/she wishes. If you need anything else, please don't hesitate to let me know and I'll be happy to help. History join request – Kennicott Glacier

Hi, Oshwah! I have found the Kennicott Glacier article has been cut from a misspelled title Kennicot Glacier and pasted into its current, correct place instead of moved in November 2005. As a result it has lost an initial part of its history, most notably the very first version by its original author, RedWolf (not to mention my tiny improvement ). I hope you can fix it. River Thames

The page is being vandalised by two different IPs. I don't know if they are the same person or not. Because the IPs are changing I'm concerned that any given IP will not reach the required 4 warnings for WP:ANV reporting. IPs vandalising: 66.215.194.49 (talk · contribs · WHOIS) and 89.236.35.53 (talk · contribs · WHOIS). I've done two reversions so can't do any more!
