Igor (イゴール, Igoru) is a reoccurring character in the Japanese video game franchise Persona. He is the servant of a being named Philemon, who gave Igor his powers, as well as the proprietor of the Velvet Room, a room where players can fuse and create Personas. Igor's appearance is that of an old man with a long nose and balding white hair. Igor is the only character in the Persona series to appear in every game.[1]

Igor, in the Japanese version of the Persona games, was voiced by Isamu Tanonaka up until his death in 2010.[2] After his death, Masane Tsukayama voiced the character.

Appearances and the Velvet Room

[edit]

In Igor's first appearance, the Velvet Room is a dark room with blue curtains surrounding the entire room. In the room is a chair, of which Igor sits on, and a piano; a person named Nameless plays said piano.

In both Persona 2 games, the Velvet Room sees little-to-no changes, with Igor's chair and the piano staying.

In Persona 3 and other versions of the game, the Velvet Room takes place in a large elevator. Igor still has a chair, but there is no piano. In Persona 3 and Persona 3 Reload, Igor has a female assistant, Elizabeth[3], but in Persona 3 Portable, the player, if they chose the female protagonist, has the choice between Elizabeth and a male assistant named Theodore.

In Persona 4 and Persona 4 Golden, the Velvet Room takes place in a limousine. Igor sits on one of the seats in the back of the limo next to Margaret, his assistant. In Persona 4 Golden, a second assistant, Marie, is also in the Velvet Room; in Golden, Marie is also a social link.

In Persona 5 and Persona 5 Royal, unlike the previous games, Igor has a much darker, lower voice. In the game, the Velvet Room is a large circular jail. Igor sits in the middle of the room and is accompanied by two assistants: Caroline and Justine; the two assistants are twins, wear eyepatches, and hats with letters that spell the word "oxymoron". Near the end of Persona 5 (or before the third semester in Persona 5 Royal), Igor is revealed to be an imposter controlled by Yaldaboath, the god of control and ruler of Mementos.[4] After defeating Yaldaboath, Igor's voice returns to its normal, more whimsical sound and the twins fuse to become Lavenza. Lavenza, in Persona 5 Royal, is the assistant in the Velvet Room during the third semester.
