Mary Ann Rutherford Lipscomb was born in 1848 in Athens, Georgia.

Lipscomb graduated from the Lucy Cobb Institute, where she later taught and then became principal. She founded the Tallulah Falls School in 1909,

Mary Ann Lipscomb worked to provide textbooks to rural schools in Athens and other Clarke County schools, but many children did not attend school, as they worked in the local mills.
