When was Tunnel 6 abandoned?
[edit]From memory, after Tunnel 41 opened it was a directional running deal where traffic in one direction used the new tunnel and traffic in the other used the old. It remained in use until it was abandoned as part of a project to increase tunnel clearance along the Reno-Sacramento grade to accommodate double-stack container trains, that was completed in the late 1990s. The thought being it would cost too much to rebore the old tunnel and the newer tunnel already had sufficient clearances. I can't find any sources for this, but can anybody else confirm it? - Confirmed. I found several rr blog articles, but finally found an article in the Sacramento Bee that confirms it. The "old route" was in use until 1993. I'll fix the article. https://www.sacbee.com/latest-news/article2571404.html Dave (talk) 17:18, 10 November 2020 (UTC)
