RE: Origin

[edit]

Every website I have read seems to point to the fact his Grandfather was Sikh who converted to Christianity. He may have been born in Punjab (Pakistan side) pre-partition, but that was part of India then, so it still makes it an Indian category. Lets not muddy the water and make this site a battle field for Nationalist beliefs. Cite references and post facts. American or Pakistani-American

[edit]

@Cyphoidbomb: Sir, as per WP:ETHNICITY, we should mention past nationalities only when: In most modern-day cases this will be the country of which the person is a citizen, national or permanent resident.....Similarly, previous nationalities or the place of birth should not be mentioned in the lead unless they are relevant to the subject's notability., Now, according to Ghazal Pervaiz as per his recent edits, Pakistani-American has to be mentioned. I told him to provide sources which prove that the subject has "Pakistani Citizenship" as well but Ghazal Pervaiz was unable to bring out any. I find it similar to the case of Mustafa Ali (wrestler) article where this kind of nationalistic POV pushing happen now and then. Kindly help us come to a decision. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 16:42, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The article Pakistani American it self mentioned They are Americans whose ancestry originates from Pakistan or Pakistanis who migrated to and reside in the United States. and as per you, it also mentioned The term may also refer to people who hold dual Pakistani and U.S. Citizenship. So in both cases we have mentioned two countries (Birth and Resident both) and he has worked in Pakistani languages songs (Punjabi, Urdu), has more famous in Pakistan then America. and one more thing he does not mention any where that he has American citizenship nor the sources found so. He resides in Pakistan and America and working in Pakistan but we are lacking sources of his citizenship so its better we should mention both.
Also all this sources called him Pakistani American.[1],[2], [3], [4],[5]
Ghazal Pervaiz, The Indian-Americans article also mentions the same thing. See Americans whose ancestry belongs to any of the many ethnic groups of the Republic of India., But you will not find the term Indian-American on Indian American subject articles for example Kalpana Chawla, Kal Penn, Vivek Murthy, etc. It is dependent on the citizenship. Since Pakistan agrees to dual citizenship, kindly provide a source that says Bohemia has Pakistani citizenship as well. After then we can keep Pakistani-American - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 17:13, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
User:Fylindfotberserk, The one you mentioned Mustafa Ali (wrestler) is not born, resides or play (work) for Pakistan so thats the different case, also Kalpana Chawla has Indian descent in its lead, Kal Penn has not working for (or work in) India and so as Vivek Murthy. Anyways, we did not have any source that Bohemia has American citizenship too, Did we have? Ghazal Pervaiz (talk) 17:21, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The matter here is that Bohemia's work is related or dedicated to Pakistan, he has worked in Coke Studio (Pakistan) etc and only he prefer songs is in Pakistani langauges, just like Neeru Bajwa who is canadian but working in India and Meenakshi Seshadri who worked in India and currently residing in America but still they have Indian in their leads section. Ghazal Pervaiz (talk) 17:28, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ghazal Pervaiz, 'Bohemia resides in American' is in the article for a long time. Secondly, any XYZ-American should definitely have a American citizenship if the subject is to be called an American. Point is, as per WP:ETHNICITY policy, a person's original homeland should not be mentioned in the lead section unless he/she is notable for it. See Rey Mysterio article as well, people from time to time tries to add Mexican American but it gets deleted. Secondly, working in Pakistan, dedicated to Pakistan has nothing to do with lead. Thirdly, we can do one thing is, we can write he is "Pakistan born American". It will cover both the issues I believe similar to Neeru Bajwa and Akshay Kumar - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 17:32, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ghazal Pervaiz, I'm OK with the line "Bohemia is a Pakistan born American" for now similar to Neeru Bajwa or Akshay Kumar. But let the experienced editor give his inputs. Kindly wait for some time. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 17:41, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Actually Akshay Kumar is widely covered by news and media and we are very clear about him but not Bohemia and as you are saying Bohemia resides in American' is in the article for a long time. did this really matters? because as per history he is Pakistani too. Wiki needs sources not article's history. He is working in Pakistan and thats what we should consider as currently we are lacking sources for his American as well as Pakistani nationality. In future, if any news source clear this doubt then we will keep or remove this. Ghazal Pervaiz (talk) 17:44, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ghazal Pervaiz, My point stays the same. If you want to include the text "Pakistani-American", then it is automatically assumed that the person has American citizenship. Now the question arises whether he has Pakistani citizenship on top of his American citizenship. Only if it is proven that he has a Pakistani, American dual citizenship, WP:ETHNICITY will allow the usage of "Pakistani-American" phrase. On the otherhand, If you write "Pakistani born American citizen", it doesn't become immediately necessary to prove his Pakistani citizenship and the meaning stays the same by and large. And that can be written in the lead without any harm I believe.
Now if you are questioning his American citizenship, then we have to skip the whole part and write something in the line "Bohemia is a Punjabi language rapper and record producer" only without mentioning American or Pakistani. In the categories, his Pakistani heritage is already covered. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 17:56, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
User:Fylindfotberserk, if you are saying your points remains same like you wants to remove Pakistani national then i have issue with (or i can say) that American is to be removed and it will goes on. The matter is that we are lacking sources of his citizenship or nationality. Ghazal Pervaiz (talk) 18:03, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Ghazal Pervaiz, If you believe both are unsourced then I think we should choose the third way explained by me. We write "Bohemia is a Punjabi language rapper and record producer". He is either American citizen or Pakistani citizen or has a Dual citizenship. Without finding proof of that we cannot write Pakistani-American which would go against policy and would automatically mean he has a dual citizenship. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 18:08, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I think Punjabi in lead will also create misunderstandings or we can say look like an incomplete lead section for readers and policy as Punjabi is spoken in India and Pakistan both. Ghazal Pervaiz (talk) 18:15, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Ghazal Pervaiz, Then better we settle with "Bohemia is a Pakistan born American rapper" similar to Neeru Bajwa, Akshay Kumar, etc for now till the other person weighs in. The reason I'm against using Pakistani-American is because it would mean he holds a Pakisatni citizenship as well which is not proven. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 18:22, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

In Neeru Bajwa's article, its Indian in lead not India born and so as Meenakshi Seshadri. The reason may be is that they are lacking sources of their citizenship which you are not understanding. We are lacking sources for Bohemia's both citizenships too not only Pakistani but American. Ghazal Pervaiz (talk) 18:30, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ghazal Pervaiz, That's because Bajwa was likely born in Canada but is Indian. But in case of Bohemia, it seems to be opposite, so Pakistan born American. That Bajwa's article needs to be fixed as well as per MOS:LEAD. And Meenakhsi Sheshadri's article doesn't mention anything about America in the lead. I believe we should settle with the middle ground I suggested till the other person suggests something. He's an admin and is helpful in this things. May be we should wait for him. Besides it is better to settle this here in the talk page so that we can use it as an example in the future. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 18:46, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I did'nt find sources for Neeru's Indian citizenship and Meenakshi's article mentioned The couple has three children, a daughter and two sons. Meenakshi lives in Plano, Texas. The thing is that Meenakshi's article was not edited for a while (being an retired actress) but Bohemia is currently active and thats why some one added American in lead to which you have issue. Ghazal Pervaiz (talk) 18:51, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
You are right we should wait for third's person involvment. Ghazal Pervaiz (talk) 18:52, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ghazal Pervaiz, Yeah the Bajwa article is confusing too. It quite late now. I've requested Cyphoidbomb in the talkpage as well. Will discuss tomorrow. Regards. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 18:57, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, Take care Ghazal Pervaiz (talk) 19:06, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I will be more then happy for seniors to participate, however i just revert back to old version, was going through history, it is very confusing as (compare to older version) his Pakistani heritage is all removed (Dont know why), i am working on him currently collecting sources and will expand whenever found reasonable sources. Ghazal Pervaiz (talk) 18:37, 14 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Ghazal Pervaiz Nice, but try to add reliable source with your content. See WP:RS for more info on how to identify reliable sources. Gist, try to get news reports, books, etc - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 18:41, 14 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, Thank You for your kind assistance Ghazal Pervaiz (talk) 18:49, 14 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ghazal Pervaiz If you find any reliable source, tribune.pk, dawn, etc about his current age or year of birth, tell me or add it. The source supporting his DoB doesn't on mentions "15 October". OK. Good night. Take care. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 18:52, 14 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I also could'nt find, but i visit his insta profile to clue about dob but not find any where. I think we should just use year as currently i dont have much time to offer to expand the article. In future if sources available we can add back Ghazal Pervaiz (talk) 20:04, 16 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • I don't think I needed to be included in this discussion. There are many other editors out there who might have an opinion. That said, this doesn't seem like a big issue. Does this person rap about being Pakistani-American? Do they rap about cultural issues related to their Pakistani heritage? Does he rap in Punjabi? Is this why they are notable? If so, then we should probably mention that they're Pakistani-American. Using Kal Penn as an example from above, while he is of Indian ancestry, he was born in the US, and most of his characters, like Kumar in Harold and Kumar are basically just American dudes with a bit of Indian flavour. He doesn't speak Gujarati in any of his works as far as I know. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 14:55, 15 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Cyphoidbomb: I myself am half inclined to keep it as "Pakistani-American" since he sings in "Pakistani Punjabi" language and likely flaunts his Pakistani roots which makes it OK as per WP:ETHNICITY. I was concerned because I didn't find any definite proof of his citizenship, Pakistani or American, except for the news sources which only mention the phrase "Pakistani-American". Secondly, the 'American' bit itself was removed in the past as can be seen in this revision. Since it was confusing, I thought it would be better to get a third opinion and since you've advised me in similar situations multiple times, I pinged you. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 16:08, 15 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
