Plus, the fact that they are illiterate (can't read, can't spell, can't count money, can't write) and represent temptation and dishonesty (according even to Jiminy) is a fundemental trait of their character, considering also the clear moral message of the story. Also, the same Geppetto states that many days passed since he, Figaro and Cleo were swallowed by Monstro.
