I have studied with Dennis Hirota, off and on, for about 25 years. He is a brilliant scholar who is deeply engaged with the Buddhist teachings and the nembutsu practice. North Americans tend to distinguish Buddhist scholars from practitioners, as if you cannot be both. In Asia it is assumed that one must be both, to be either. Joseph Bradish
I'm a descendant of the Bradish family and have researched Bradish in the UK archives. He did not sail with Kidd, except when he was a prisoner on the same ship enroute from Boston to London. The timing of Kidd and Bradish is very close and each sailed on different ships named Adventure, hence much confusion. Eventually I hope to write this all out, if I can read my notes.

Writing about distinguished people you know
Hi, I am a new Wikipedian, participating in a Women in Red event at the University of Edinburgh. I hope to add pages for many of the female children's book authors and illustrators who are not currently included. That said, I am myself a children's book author and illustrator and know many of the people I'd like to include. (The children's book world is a small one.) It means that I am well placed to document them all correctly. (As a doctoral student this is important to me.) However, I'm hoping this won't be a problem as far as conflicts of interest are concerned? Thank you! ElizabethDulemba (talk) 11:31, 25 August 2017 (UTC)
- If you haven't already, read Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. I don't think you necessarily have a COI problem if you are writing about people you know and have no financial connection. I would proceed cautiously. Kendall-K1 (talk) 12:01, 25 August 2017 (UTC)
Pronunciation Guides Should Be A Required Component of Biography Entries
I regularly consult Wikipedia in search of pronunciation guides to the names of famous people not of English origin, most recently Tomaž Šalamun. Entries I've read more recently seem to lack them, whereas, in the past, I recall having been able to find them. I suggest that biography entries lacking both a written and hyperlinked audio file guide to pronunciation of the subject's name be flagged as incomplete until that information is added.ProphecyRecipe (talk) 16:45, 25 August 2017 (UTC)
- I think part of the problem is that few of us understand the International Phonetic Alphabet. It's confusing and looks like gibberish to non-linguists. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 18:27, 25 August 2017 (UTC)
- I think deprecating readable pronunciation guides was a mistake. I understand the argument about readable guides being imprecise, but imprecise and readable is better than precise and incomprehensible. Kendall-K1 (talk) 21:45, 25 August 2017 (UTC)
Jean Alfonse article
Opinions are needed on the following matter: Talk:Jean Alfonse#Recent edits. A permalink for it is here. The matter primarily concerns whether or not Jean Alfonse was Portugese and what the title of the article should be. Flyer22 Reborn (talk) 00:00, 28 August 2017 (UTC)

User:Davidgoodheart
Could someone take a look at the recent edits of User:Davidgoodheart? He seems enthusiastic and working in good faith but I'm not sure we really want categories like Category:Deceased American Celebrities? Some mentoring might be in order? Le Deluge (talk) 13:53, 5 September 2017 (UTC)
Biram Dah Abeid
Is any information out of date? Is anything missing that could be added?
-Biram's recent activity isn't up to date as of Sept.2017 and some pictures of him demonstrating along with his organization couldn't hurt.ElgeStevens (talk) 22:01, 5 September 2017 (UTC)

Was the removal of content about Arab/Levantine passengers from the Titanic justified? (not involving living people)
Please see this talk page section Talk:Passengers_of_the_RMS_Titanic#Was_the_removal_of_info_on_Arab.2FLevantine_passengers_sourced_from_Al_Arabiya_justified.3F on whether the removal of content about Arab/Levantine passengers from the Titanic justified. In particular: is it necessary that information on the demographic makeup of the Levantine/Arab passengers come from a formal historian, or would an Al Arabiya news article be enough?
