An explanation: I am a professional botanist and contribute to Wikipedia on the plant groups I know sufficiently about. This, however, makes it unavoidable in some cases that I either cite scientific publications by myself (which could be seen as self-promotion) or do not give references at all (which would make my entries unverifyable or give the impression of original research). I have decided to do the former and hope that it will not be seen as vanity, but as a trade-off that can be accepted if contributions from experts are to be encouraged.
