After serving Doordarshan for about twenty eight years he retired on 31st Dec. 2013 as Asssistant Director Programs.

He has written four books of Punjabi prose i.e. " Pehla Khat Aakhri " , " Varka Varka Vajood ", " Tanha Tanha Tarey", " Guftgu Gardish Ghubaar" and a novel based on the Sikh massacre of Delhi in 1984 , " Ik Giaran Chaurasi". He is acclaimed as one of the twentieth century prose writers of Punjabi language. " Kaun Karey Insaaf " a Punjabi/ Hindi movie ,jointly produced by Satluj Films ( India ) and Rajmahal Production ( Australia) is based on Baljit Singh's novel " Ik Giaran Chaurasi".
Born on 24th December 1953, Baljit Singh is the younger most son of Late S. Kartar Singh ' Balbir' a leading advocate of Bathinda. Baljit Singh's wife Barinder Kaur is the eldest daughter of the eminent Punjabi novelist Prof. N.S. Tasneem. She is also post-graduated in Dramatic Art from Punjabi University Patiala. Baljit Singh's son Gauravjit Singh has done post-graduation in English from Punjab University, Patiala and Law from Delhi University, daughter Hairatjit Kaur is in I.F.S officer married to an I.P.S.
