Lenex stands for LEN Exchange Format, a data exchange format to exchange data in Swimming in Europe. The current version of the format is 3.0.
Structure
[edit]Files in Lenex format normally have the file extension LEF or LXF. Files with extension LEF are UTF-8 encoded, files with extension LXF contain a LEF file, compressed in ZIP.
The Lenex format is based on the markup language XML. There is no XML schema (XSD) available right now. One reason for this may lie in its history, as the XML specification was only published by the W3C in 1998 and was therefore quite new and not yet well established when the Lenex format was planned in 1999. Furthermore, there are additional restrictions associated with the format that are difficult or impossible to represent in an XML schema.
All XML elements and attributes are described in detail in the Lenex-Dokumentation.[1]
History
[edit]On the initiative of the Swiss Christian Kaufmann, various developers, mainly former swimmers, came together in 1999 to develop a new data exchange format for the sport of swimming. The aim was to replace the widely differing national exchange formats with a standardized European format. Version 1 of the Lenex format was created and released in 2000.
The discussion and development of version 2.0 began in 2004 and the first public version 2.0 was released on October 12, 2004. The last change to this version was published on June 4, 2007.
Work on the current version 3.0 began in November 2008 and was completed on March 17, 2010 with the publication of the documentation by Christian Kaufmann.
