Hugo Thielen (born 11 June 1946) in Eschweiler is a German freelance author and editor.

Thielen studied German language and literature, philosophy and education in Bonn from 1966; degree: Master of Arts (M.A.) and Staatsexamen. Since 1973 in Hanover, working full-time and part-time as editor and author for various publishing houses (Schroedel Schulbuchverlag, Hanover, until 1981; Th Schäfer Verlag, Hanover, until 1995; also for Postskriptum Verlag in Hanover; Hirschgraben Verlag in Frankfurt am Main, Zu Klampen Verlag [de] in Lüneburg and Springe,[1] and Lutherisches Verlagshaus in Hanover). From 1983 to 1995 he was a freelance music critic for the Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung (HAZ).

Thielen is co-author (besides Helmut Knocke) of Hannover. Kunst- und Kultur-Lexikon [de], published in 1994, 4th edition in 2007 by Zu Klampen Verlag, Springe.[1] He is also co-editor, author and designer of the Hannoverschen Biographischen Lexikon (2002) and of the Stadtlexikon Hannover [de].[1] He is head of a Verlagsbüro, an office for freelance writers.[1]
