Malignant Man is a 2011 superhero action horror graphic novel by James Wan.
History
Alan Gates, a cancer patient with a terminal diagnosis, is resigned to his fate, until he discovers that his tumor is actually a mysterious parasite! Granted a second lease on life and incredible, otherworldly powers, Alan must fight against an evil army buried beneath society's skin, all the while unlocking the secrets of his forgotten past. Dark, twisted, and unlike anything else on the stands, Malignant Man is a sci-fi thriller that can't be missed! Covers by Trevor Hairsine and Rael Lyra.

In June 2014, 20th Century Fox acquired the rights to Wan's graphic novel Malignant Man. According to reports, Wan was to develop the concept with a view to directing and producing the film. As of the time of the announcement, comic book label BOOM! Studios is slated for a production role alongside co-producers Stephen Christy, Ross Richie and Adam Yoelin.[1][2] In June 2016, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Brad Peyton will direct the film.[3] In August 2017, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Rebecca Thomas had now signed on to direct, and the title of the project was confirmed to be Malignant.[4] In July 2019, it was announced that James Wan would direct the film at New Line Cinema from a screenplay by Akela Cooper and J.T. Petty, based on an original story he wrote alongside Ingrid Bisu and serve as a producer alongside Michael Clear under his Atomic Monster banner.[5]
On October 24, 2019, Wan clarified that the film is not based on his graphic novel Malignant Man, stating, "It's definitely not a superhero film. Malignant is an original thriller not based off any existing IP."[6]
In August 2019, Annabelle Wallis, George Young and Jake Abel were cast in the film.[7][8][9] In September 2019, Maddie Hasson, Michole Briana White and Jacqueline McKenzie joined the cast of the film.[10][11] Mckenna Grace was added to the cast in March 2020.[12]
Production began on September 24, 2019,[13][14] and concluded on December 8, 2019.[15] Malignant was originally scheduled to be released in the United States on August 14, 2020, by Warner Bros. Pictures,[16] but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film was removed from the release schedule in March 2020.[17]
