The literal meaning of Brht Trayi is Three great composition. The word is used for the classical ayurvedic lietrary work , which is composed, compilled and edited by Vagbhatta 2nd, under the title Astang Sangraha, known among the Ayurvedaic physicians.

Vagbhatta 2nd edited all three great work of the Charak, Sushruta and Astang Hridaya written by Vagbhatta 1st, into one and included his own experiences, under a new title "Astanga Sangrah". which means 'collection of eight parts'. Astang word is used for the Astang Ayurveda,the eight parts of Ayurveda medical science.

Astanga sangrah is divide into six parts.

  1. Sutra Sthana
  2. Uttar Sthana
  3. Shareer Sthana : divided in 12 chapters
  4. Nidan Sthan : divided in 16 chapters
  5. Chikitsa Sthan : divided in 24 chapters
  6. Kalpa Sthan : divided in 8 chapters

The Brhat Trayi is also called Vradhtrayi / Vridha trayi, that means three Old classics.
