The 2014 season of the Indian Premier League, abbreviated as IPL 7 or Pepsi IPL 2014, will be the seventh season of the IPL. The Mumbai Indians will be the defending champions, having won the 2013 season after defeating Chennai Super Kings in the Final. There will be eight teams this season, one fewer than 2013 after the withdrawal of the Pune Warriors India.
There is a possibility for this season to be held outside of India to avoid adding to the existing security demands for the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections should its dates overlap with the tournament dates. A decision will be made after the announcement of the dates of the elections.[1][2]
The players auction took place on 12 February and 13 February 2014. Unlike previous seasons, the auction was in Indian Rupees rather than United States dollars.
Background
Staff Changes
Gary Kirsten signed up as Head Coach of Delhi Daredevils.[3] Kolkata Knight Riders appointed Woorkeri Raman as batting coach while Wasim Akram returned as bowling coach.[4][5] Royal Challengers Bangalore announced Daniel Vettori (member of RCB squad, 2011-13) as head coach and Allan Donald (Head coach of now withdrawn Pune Warriors India in the last IPL), Trent Woodhill (former batting and fielding coach of Delhi Daredevils) as batting and fielding coach.[6] Darren Lehmann was not able to continue with Kings XI Punjab due to his commitments with Australian cricket team.[7] Sanjay Bangar was appointed as Kings XI's assistant coach.[8]
Broadcast
Times Internet decided to share IPL digital rights with STAR India giving StarSports.com streaming rights instead of YouTube, which has been streaming IPL since its inception in 2008.[9][10]
Player auction
On 24 December 2013, the IPL Governing Council finalised the Player Regulations for the 2014 season.[11] All teams will be allowed to retain a maximum of five players (at most four Indian capped players) and the rest of the players will go into the auction pool.[12] Retention of players would reduce the teams' salary cap by a fixed amount, regardless of the players' actual salaries. Some franchises were unhappy with new retention rules.[13][14] Each team has a starting salary cap of ₹60 crore.
This season's auction will see the introduction of several new rules. First, all player fees will be denominated in Indian rupees but overseas players may choose to be paid in another currency. Second is the "rights to match", which allows teams to purchase a player from their 2013 squad in the auction by matching the highest bid. The number of "rights to match" depends on the amount of players retained by the team.[15] Third, the players' salaries will not include their fees for participation in the Champions League Twenty20. Teams who qualify will pay each player who represents them an additional 10% of his IPL fee. Previously, players who qualified for the CLT20 with their IPL team had to forfeit 20% of their IPL salary to represent another team.[16]
On 27 January 2014 BCCI released a list of capped players to all the franchises which will play in IPL 2014 (Season 7). This list has a total of 233 players from from 10 countries. The highest base price is Rs 2 crore and the lowest base is Rs 10 lakhs. On January 29, 2014 this list was updated to 244 capped players and 651 uncapped players. On 6 February 2014 the final auction list was shortlisted by team to 514 players (219 capped and 295 uncapped). As of 10 February 2014[update] the list was further shortened to 511 players (216 capped and 295 uncapped) after withdrawal of 3 players.[17]
This list of 511 players has 305 players from India and 58 from Australia, followed by 40 from South Africa, 36 from West Indies, 27 from Sri Lanka, 22 from New Zealand, 14 from England, 7 from Bangladesh, 2 from Zimbabwe and Ireland each and 1 from Netherlands.
Player auctions for IPL 2014 (with the option to extend for either one or two additional years) will take place on the 12th and 13th of February in Bangalore. On 7 February 2014, a plea was filed in the Supreme Court to interfere in the IPL auction in relation to the 2013 Indian Premier League spot-fixing and betting case involving Gurunath Meiyappan of Chennai Super Kings.[18] On 10 February 2014, an IPL spot-fixing report finding Meiyappan involved in betting was submitted to the Supreme Court[19][20] However the Supreme Court allowed the auction to go through as per schedule.[21][22]
