Template:Infobox reality music competition The third season of The X Factor is set to premiere in the fall of 2013. Based on the UK format, the competition consists of auditions (first with producers and later with the judges and a live audience), boot camp, the judges' houses, and the live finals. The winner receives a $5 million recording contract with Sony Music and Syco Music. Producer auditions are scheduled to begin on March 6, 2013, in Los Angeles, while judges auditions are expected to begin in May. L.A. Reid and Britney Spears left the series after the second season.

It was announced on October 22, 2012, that The X Factor would be returning for a third season,[1] with Simon Cowell confirmed to be returning for his third season on the show.[2] On December 14, 2012, L.A. Reid announced that he would be leaving the show after serving as a judge on the show for its first two seasons, as he wished to refocus his work on his record company, Epic Records.[3] Britney Spears stated her intentions on returning to the show for its third season,[4] but it was confirmed on January 11, 2013, that she would not be returning, in order to focus on her music career.[5]

Although no confirmations have been made, Khloe Kardashian, Mario Lopez, and Caroline Flack are reportedly in negotiations to be hosts for the third season.[6] Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi is reportedly rumored to consider herself for the position as host. Lady Gaga, Cheryl Cole, Kelly Rowland, Katy Perry, John Mayer, and Ne-Yo have been reported as potential replacements to Spears and Reid on the judging panel, however only Ne-Yo has confirmed that he is in negotiations to join the show.[7] Diddy said in an interview with Extra, which is co-hosted by Lopez, that he was interested in possibly being a judge on the third season. [8] February 2013 reports indicated that Cowell had his eyes on Lady Gaga to fill one of the spots left on the judging panel, since Gaga had just cancelled the remaining dates of her Born This Way Ball Tour due to injury and therefore had a relatively free schedule. Following the conclusion of the second season, Demi Lovato questioned whether she would return for its third season, or instead focus on her own career as a performer, stating, "I have no idea what’s gonna happen next season, and I don’t think anybody does."[9] It was later reported she would "love" to return for the third season. On March 28, 2013, it was confirmed that Lovato will return for the third season. Cowell and Lovato are the only two confirmed judges for season three; the other two spots on the panel has yet to be filled.[10][11][12] X Factor executive producers Rob Wade and Andrew Llinares told the press in February 2013 that "we're speaking to a few people [as potential new judges]", however that their main focus was on the quickly-approaching auditions and on the contestants.

In addition to having online auditions, it was announced at the conclusion of the second season that auditions for the third season of the show would be held throughout the country in Charleston, South Carolina; Denver, Colorado; Long Island, New York; Los Angeles, California and New Orleans, Louisiana. On the "Registration and Audition Rules" document[13] on The X Factor USA's website about the auditions, it was announced where the auditions were going to be taking place. Note that the Cities, Venue, and Dates are subject to change.

Bootcamp and judges' houses

The contestants selected at auditions are further refined through a series of performances at "bootcamp", and then at the "judges' houses", until a small number eventually progress to the live finals (17 in season 1, and 16 in season 2). The houses the contestants visit may not actually belong to the judges, but are sometimes rented for the purpose. During these stages, the producers allocate each of the judges a category to mentor. At bootcamp the judges collaboratively choose either 32 acts (season 1; eight from each category) or 24 acts (season 2; six from each category) for the next round, and only then are told by the show's producers which category they are to mentor. The contestants did not know who their mentor was until they revealed themselves at the house. The judges then disband for the "judges' houses" round, where they further reduce their acts on location at a residence (often collectively spanning the globe) with the help of a celebrity guest.
