Citi Bike is a bicycle sharing system that will serve New York City beginning in May 2013. [1][2]

Alta Bicycle Share was selected in September 2011 to develop and operate the privately funded bike share system, using Montreal's Bixi technology.[3][4] Software problems delayed the planned July 2012 start.[5][6] The opening was delayed further due to damage caused by Hurricane Sandy.[7]

The system will initially consist of 5,500 bicycles and nearly 300 stations in parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn.[8] It will later expand to about 10,000 bicycles and 600 stations in Manhattan south of 79th Street plus stations in several Brooklyn neighborhoods, including Greenpoint, Crown Heights, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Park Slope and Carroll Gardens.[9]

The system's name is derived from Citibank, which spent $41 million to be the system's lead sponsor for five years.[10]
