2013 Caribbean Premier League

The Caribbean Premier League is an annual Twenty20 cricket tournament in the West Indies. It was created in 2013 and replaced the Caribbean Twenty20 as the premier Twenty20 competition in the West Indies.[1]

History

Following the creation of the Indian Premier League in 2008, many of the Test-playing nations have followed their example and introduced new domestic Twenty20 competitions. These competitions included features such as franchise teams, more participation from overseas players and more entertaining viewer experiences. The West Indies Cricket Board first announced the plans for the Caribbean Premier League in September 2012.[2] On December 13, 2012, the WICB announced that they had finalized an agreement with Ajmal Khan[3] founder of Barbados-based merchant bank, Verus International, for the funding of the league. As part of the agreement, the WICB will receive additional funding from Verus International for additional retainer contracts for players in addition to the 20 annual retainer contracts the board currently funds.[4]

Dates for the tournament were confirmed for the 2013 Caribbean Premier League as 29 July to 26 August. The 2014 and 2015 tournaments will take place from 5 July to 10 August and 21 June to 26 July respectively. [5]

Format

Teams

The tournament will include six franchises with 90 contracted players in total. Each team will have one of the six icon players.[1]

The tournament will consist of six city-based franchises, most probably from Jamaica, Barbados, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Antigua and Barbuda and Saint Lucia.
