An animal (from the Latin anima, for breath or soul) is a living organism of the kingdom Animalia (itself part of the division of Eukaryota). The term is often used in the narrower sense of non-human animal, or in the still narrower sense of non-human mammal.

The scientific study of animals is called Zoology (a sub-discipline of Biology, the study of all living things).

See the article Animalia for a more technical description of the animal kingdom.
