Melting is the second EP by Hyuna, released on October 21, 2012. It features the number one single, "Ice Cream".[1] The release date was originally scheduled for October 22, 2012 but due to a leak it was digitally released a day earlier by Cube Entertainment.[2]
Release
On October 9, 2012, it was revealed that HyunA would return as a solo artist on October 17 with her new single, “Ice Cream“ from her second EP, Melting.[3]
On October 13, HyunA postponed her solo mini album release date. The agency stated, “HyunA’s mini album, which was originally scheduled for release on October 17th, has been postponed to the 22nd.” The reason for the delay is that an additional part has been decided upon to be added to the music video in order to further upgrade the performance and choreography for the title track “Ice Cream“.[4]
On October 17, it was reported that "Very Hot" from HyunA's second EP Melting was banned by television networks KBS and MBC. The given reason was due to copyright: the song lyrics contained a reference to the brand: KakaoTalk. The ban received harsh criticism from netizens.[5] The album leaked days before its original release date of October 22, 2012 without permission. Cube Entertainment decided to officially release the album a day earlier to contain the damage done from the unauthorised release.[6]
Composition
Musical style and content
The mini-album begins with "Don't Fall Apart" (also translated as "Straight Up"), a hip-hop track written and composed by Beatamin and contains marching band elements. The lyrics depict Hyuna's feelings about releasing a new solo album and takes an aggressive stance against naysayers. The lead single, “Ice Cream”, is a hip-hop/pop track written and composed by Brave Brothers and Elephant Kingdom.[7] Maboos from the hip-hop group, Electroboyz, also features in the song. The song is mistakenly touted as the first time Hyuna has collaborated with Brave Brothers; they had previously worked on a track called "2009" on labelmate Lee Gi-kwang's solo debut mini-album, First Episode A New Hero, which Hyuna featured in.
The third track, "Unripe Apple", is a collaboration between Hyuna and the main rapper of BTOB, Jung Ilhoon, who contributed as a lyricist. It is a light pop song in which she sings of a girl who wants to be seen as an innocent girl in front of her boyfriend.[8] "To My Boyfriend" is a ballad co-written by Hyuna with Son Young Jin and Im Sang Hyuk who also composed the song. The last track, "Very Hot", was written and composed by Hyuna and best friend, Kim Lee Won.[9] Shinsadong Tiger, the composer of her hit Bubble Pop!, also participated in the composition of the song.
Promotion
Hyuna performed "Ice Cream", "Don't Fall Apart" and "Unripe Apple" (albeit shortened for the latter two) on music shows starting on October 25, 2012 on Mnet's M! Countdown, KBS's Music Bank, MBC's Show! Music Core and SBS's Inkigayo.[10]
Sales
Ice Cream debuted at number one on GaOn Digital Singles weekly chart, Korea's official chart, in its first week.[1]
Music video
On October 19, 2012, the music video teaser for "Ice Cream" was released.[11] The full music video was released on October 22, 2012. The music video features a short cameo from Psy.[12] Four days after its release, the music video tied the record for the K-pop music video to achieve ten million views on YouTube the fastest. The record is now held by both Girls' Generation's "The Boys" in addition to "Ice Cream". This achievement is especially notable because it even exceeds PSY's attachment rate for his viral hit, "Gangnam Style", which took fifteen days to acquire the same number of views.[13]
