Tesseract are a British progressive metal band formed in 2003. They are currently signed to Century Media Records.
History
TesseracT started out in 2003 whilst founding member Acle Kahney was recording and writing with his band Mikaw Barish. What started as an outlet for creativity and experimentation grew and Kahney posted clips of his technically heavy guitar work on forums such as Sevenstring.org, taking the feedback on board and gradually improving his technique. It was in this way that a community of bedroom producer-musicians were spawned and this new wave of progressive music was created, along with names such as Misha Mansoor (Periphery), Paul Ortiz (Chimp Spanner) and John Browne (Monuments), who was a band mate of Kahney's in Fellsilent, It was these such musicians who led the way into what was to become the djent scene.
Embodying the international vibe of the genre, Frenchman Juilien Perier initially supplied vocals but the logistical difficulties meant that he could not join the band permanently. The line-up was completed by Jay Postones on drums, James Monteith on guitar and Amos Williams on bass. Monteith and Williams brought along with them the vocalist of their previous band <209> (Abisola Obasanya). In 2009, the band parted ways with Obasanya[1] and settled on Dan Tompkins (First Signs of Frost, Piano) to take over vocal duties,[2] going on to write and record vocals for the debut album, One.
On August 20th 2011, rumours began spreading that vocalist Daniel Tompkins had left the band, as TesseracT were seen performing with a different vocalist during a gig at the Craufurd Arms in Milton Keynes. This was confirmed by the band on the 23rd, citing personal reasons for Daniel's departure. TesseracT introduced their new singer as Elliot Coleman (Omnom, Zelliack, ex-Sky Eats Airplane, ex-Of Legends). [3][4] Elliot stated later that he would not move permanently to the UK though he would be living there for up to half of the year.
During early 2012, TesseracT worked on an acoustic EP inspired by the radio acoustic session they played in Brooklyn, New York, a year before. The Perspective EP was released on May 25th, 2012. On June 12th, TesseracT announced that Coleman had amicably left the band. [5]
Sadly, our good buddy Elliot has decided to leave team TesseracT. We’d like to thank Elliot for everything he has done for us. We have loved having him be a part of this beast. He introduced us to a completely different side of our sound, as well the delights of Pho! Things we will always be grateful for. So, as well as continuing to write and record album 2, we are also on the hunt for that special (shpecial) person to be the new full-time TesseracT vocalist.
Music
The band play a specific style of progressive metal. which features polyrhythmic riffs, odd time signatures, a midrange sounding distorted guitar tone and melodic clean passages influenced by ambient music. Their style is known commonly as djent.[6][7][8] The band use 7 string guitars in unusual tunings (Bb,F,Bb,Eb,F,Bb,Eb and Ab,F,Bb,Eb,F,Bb,Eb). Unlike many djent bands, Tesseract makes very limited use of harsh vocals, preferring instead to use clean vocals. Elliot Coleman's vocal style has been compared to the vocal styles of Jeff Buckley and Matthew Bellamy (Muse). Elliot left the band in June 2012 to pursue other projects.
