Narayan Gopal (Template:Lang-ne) was the most prominent and popular singer in Nepali music history. His songs are even popular today. He is popularly known as "Swar Samrat" (Nepali: स्वर सम्राट, meaning: Emperor of Voice) in Nepali music. He is well known as a singer as well as a composer. His voice range allowed him to sing songs of every genre of Nepali music. His songs are often richly orchestrated with the sitar, harmonium and flute.
Personal life
Narayan Gopal was born into a Newar family in Kathmandu. His father was a classical musician and wanted his son to follow his footsteps. Narayan Gopal was interested in music from an early age but not exactly into the classical field. At the age of 12 he met Prem dhoj pradhan (popular nepali singers) and they used to go in musical programs together. Narayan Gopal was very shy. He just used to tell other to sing, but he never sang. In B.S 2016 Prem Dhoj Pradhan took him to Radio Nepal to take a voice test, He sang "Panchi ko Pankha ma Dharti ko Ya diyo" written by Dr. Ram man Trishit and composed by Prem Dhoj Pradhan, which he passed on the first try. Gopal's first song recorded was the pop song "Swarga ki rani maya ki khani". His father was so upset thinking his son started singing useless songs and told Ratna Shamsher Thapa about it. Gopal then went to India to study classical music to make his father happier, but he was forced to return back. Gopal stayed there only for 4 and a half months and could not study music. Various problems forced him to return back to Nepal. While he went to India, "e kanchha thattaima yo baisa jana lagyo" spread and Gopal was already popular all over Nepal, including Darjeeling.
In 1965, Gopal went to Darjeeling with Nagendra Thapa (his close friend and popular lyricist) to meet Gopal Yonjan. When Gopal Yonjan came to Nepal, Nepali music started getting magical warmness. He and Gopal Yonjan became mit( "mitjyus") - to be closest friends forever (in Nepali culture). Narayan Gopal and Gopal Yonjan got their own heights because of respect and honesty towards each other. Their bond is the bond which gave new sky to Nepali music.
Gopal married Pemala Lama (his long time fan from Darjeeling) at age 31. They did not have any children.
Musical journey
After Gopal Yonjan came to Nepal, Narayan Gopal sang many songs written and composed by him. During his career, Narayan Gopal rendered his voice to over 500 compositions, including modern songs, ballets, dance dramas, movies and patriotic songs. These songs have contributed in enriching the store of Nepali music and popularized Nepali music beyond political frontiers. He was very selective about the songs he sang. Most of his songs are melodies with great lyrical depth or superb rendition. They still touch the sentiments of the listener and stirs up emotions.
All of his songs are evergreen and popular. His voice is still leading Nepali music.
