The 2012 Izod IndyCar Series[1] season will be the 101st season of American open wheel racing. Its premier event will be the 96th Indianapolis 500, scheduled for Sunday, May 27.
The ICONIC Project
2012 will see the introduction of IndyCar's new ICONIC (Innovative, Competitive, Open-Wheel, New, Industry-Relevant, Cost-Effective) plan, the biggest change to the sport in recent history. Under the ICONIC regulations, all teams and drivers will compete with a core chassis developed by Italian designer Dallara; however, teams will be allowed to add their own combinations of aerodynamic parts, with all packages being made available to all teams for a minimum price.[2] ICONIC committee member Tony Purnell has given an open invitation to car manufacturers and companies such as Lockheed Martin and General Electric to develop their own kits - consisting of front and rear wings, sidepods and engine cowlings - for the 2012 season.[3]
The new open engine formula announced allows for any twin turbocharged engine up to 2.4L and 6 cylinders to run provided it can be tuned to produce the full range of 550-750 HP. The formula would allow hybrid systems, KERS system similar to Formula 1 and other engine enhancements. The "push to pass" feature in 2012 will allow a limited horsepower gain up to 100 HP as opposed to the current "overtake assist" which only provides 20 HP.[4]
On August 9, 2010, it was announced that "time is running short" for potential engine suppliers.[5]
On August 19, 2010, Cosworth announced that they are interested in providing an inline-4 engine.[6]
On June 2, 2010, Speed Channel announced Ford, Cosworth, and Mazda as potential engine suppliers.[7]
On September 13, 2010, it was announced that up to 45 days are remaining for potential engine suppliers to submit their proposals.[8] It was also announced that the new car will undergo more rigorous testing.
On October 25, 2010, Randy Bernard announced that he is looking to change the series to have more major drivers.[9] He also announced that he wants to work with NASCAR and the NHRA to help improve relations between the series. Bernard also wants to reunite relations with USAC, which has not sanctioned the IndyCar Series since 1978.
An announcement took place on November 12, 2010 to announce the return of Chevrolet as an engine supplier in 2012. [10] With this, the 2012 season will mark the first season since 2005 to have more than one engine supplier.
The Indianapolis Star's Curt Cavin reported that an announcement of a 3rd engine manufacturer, Lotus would take place at 5 PM EST, November 18th at the LA Auto Show.[11] The Engines will run on E85 fuel (85% Ethanol and 15% Gasoline) currently the engines run on 100 % Fuel Grade Ethanol.

Existing race contracts
- The São Paulo Indy 300 has a contract through 2019.[15]
- The Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg will continue through 2013.[16] City officials look to extend the contract through 2014.[17]
- An agreement has been signed with the city of Long Beach to extend the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach to 2015 with an option through 2020.[18]
- Barber Motorsports Park signed a three-year deal through 2012.[19]
- The contract for the Baltimore Grand Prix runs through 2015.[20][21]
New races
- Quebec politician and Minister of Employment Sam Hamad has proposed a street race in Quebec City.[22]The proposal has gained the backing of Quebec City mayor Régis Labeaume and IndyCar driver Alex Tagliani. IndyCar tepresentatives among them Tony Cotman, were in Quebec City in May 2010 to evaluate the possibility of holding an event in the city in 2011. Promoter and owner of FAZZT Race Team Andre Azzi is optimistic and believes that the IRL brass is keen about having a urban race held in the old city with a similar style to the Monaco Grand Prix.[23] The circuit would be established on the lower part of Quebec, in the Old Port and Bassin Louise. IRL CEO Randy Bernard said that the event is a possibility for the 2012 schedule.[24]
- A revival of the Cleveland race was discussed for years.[25] It would have involved a unique twin race weekend, with one race Friday night on a new oval layout, and a second race on the traditional road course layout.[26][27] Due to lack of local business support as of August 2010, the target date is 2012.[28][29]
- The Detroit Grand Prix at the Belle Isle Street Circuit was discussed for a 2011 revival but is more likely to return in 2012.[30]
- Officials at promoter Mi-Jack Promotions are confident that the Grand Prix of Houston will be part of the 2012 schedule.[31]
- The Octane Racing Group, promoters of the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Canada and the NASCAR Nationwide race at Circuit Gilles Villenueve and the Honda Indy Edmonton, would like to add and promote an additional street race in Calgary, Alberta for 2012.
- Randy Bernard said that talks are underway with Michigan International Speedway, Laguna Seca, and Road America.
- The league is exploring a race in Qingdao, China. The inaugural event would be a street race, and later editions would move to a proposed 400,000 to 500,000-seat oval/road course facility for 2012.[32][33][34][35]
- Terry Angstadt travelled to Porto Alegre, Brazil on November 25th 2010 and discussed with local authorities about a second Brazilian event in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost Brazilian State. The race could be called "GP Mercosul", after the Common Market of South America.[36]
