Skiliftkarussell Winterberg

The Skiliftkarussell Winterberg is a winter sports area in the Rothaargebirge mountains near Winterberg (Hochsauerland, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany).

Geography

This extensive winter sports region lies mainly west of the town of Winterberg on the mountains of the Kahler Asten (at 841.9 m above sea level (NN) the third highest peak in the region), Bremberg, Poppenberg, Herrloh and Kappe. Its main access road is the B 236.

Description

The Skiliftkarussell Winterberg has 21 ski lifts and numerous ski slopes and langlauf trails (Loipen), the St.George ski jump and four other smaller ski jumps as well as a bobsleigh run. Since the late 1990s three T-bar lifts have been replaced by four-man chairlifts and two T-bars by a Quick Jet six-man chairlift. The pistes served by these lifts have a height difference of less that 100 metres - with one exception: the FIS slalom run - and are therefore in the easy to medium categories of difficulty. They are thus well suited to beginners and inexperienced skiers.

The St. George ski jump, which is sited on the western slopes of the Herrloh, and the bobsleigh run, which is located west of the town centre below the Kappe (776 m above NN), draw many visitors because of the competitions held there: the German Championships and Summer Grand Prix for the Nordic combined event have been held on the St. George jump. On the bobsleigh run, various competitions take place in the winter months for bobsleigh, sledding, Skeleton and wok racing. Near the bobsleigh run there is a Sommerrodelbahn and two ski lifts. Last but not least was the Wok World Championships by TV Total (Pro Sieben) which took place on the terrain here, especially on the bobsleigh run, featuring dozens of well-known people and which hit the headlines across Germany.

During the summer the first German mountainboard park operates on the Poppenberg. A T-bar and a chairlift transport sportsmen to five different routes with varying levels of difficulty, including a mountainboarding cross-country course and a green piste.[1]
