St. Charles Air Line constructed by IC, authorized by city ordinance passed 1855; owned jointly by:
- Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad → Burlington Northern Railroad → BNSF Railway
- Galena and Chicago Union Railroad → Chicago and North Western Railway → Union Pacific Railroad
- Illinois Central Railroad
- Michigan Central Railroad → sold to IC by 1996
Elevation completed 1898-1899
- Connections, west to east (all remained both before and after elevation)
- Joint CB&Q/C&NW at west end
- 16th Street interlocking
- Southeast quadrant connection with Chicago and Western Indiana Railroad (and its tenants) and Chicago and Alton Railroad
- C&WI connection probably disappeared during elevation
- C&A connection was gone by 1952, and seems to have always been redundant to CM&N connection (but it was trivial to build because of the connection between the C&A and joint LS&MS/CRI&P crossing the SCAL at-grade - why did this exist? The C&A originally used LaSalle Street Station, but moved out long before elevation)
- Southeast quadrant connection with Chicago, Madison and Northern Railroad (→ IC) and Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway
- AT&SF connection probably disappeared during elevation, which is probably when the AT&SF and CM&N lines were combined through Alton Junction
- Northwest and southwest quadrant connections with joint Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway/Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad (New York, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad trackage rights)
- Southeast quadrant connection with Chicago and Western Indiana Railroad (and its tenants) and Chicago and Alton Railroad
- IC (MC trackage rights) at east end
