Overview
According to ancient prophecy, so long as the throne of Skala is held by a woman the country shall prosper. However, when the Prince Erius takes the throne from his mother and begins the systematic murder of all potential female heirs. The wizard Iya, inspired by a vision, sets about to ensure the survival of the daughter of Princess Ariani and her husband Duke Rhius by any means necessary. Enlisting the help of a mountain witch named Lhel and her apprentice Arkoniel, they strive to save Skala. Princess Ariani gives birth to twins, one male, one female and, using Lhel's blood magic, the male twin is sacrificed so that the female may take his form.
Although the king is fooled, Princess Ariani is able to see through the deceit and goes mad with grief, while her daughter, Tobin. now in male form, is raised far away from court for fear of anyone discovering the secret.
We see Prince Tobin's childhood, his friendship with his Squire, Kirothius (Ki) and his joining of Prince Korin's companions and subsequent discovery of his own femininity. From here Tobin must learn to accept impending womanhood while strengthening his position at court, before revealing herself as Tamir and fighting to win the crown.

Relationship to the Nightrunner series
The Tamir Triad takes place several hundred years before the Nightrunner series and there is no character overlap- the wizard Arkoniel is stated as being the mentor of Nysander, a character in the Nightrunner books, and an ancestor of Seregil, also a major character in the Nightrunner series, is met very briefly.
