Douglas Vincent "SA" Martinez (born October 29, 1969 in Omaha, Nebraska) is a vocalist and DJ for the alternative rock band 311. He is of Latino descent. Martinez's nickname is partially a play on the Mexican Spanish slang term "ese", meaning "buddy" or "friend." It is also said that SA had an "out-of-body experience" in college and S.A. is an acronym for "Spooky Apparition" stemming from that experience.
Early life
Martinez was born and raised in Omaha. When his friends started a band he began making guest appearances with the band as a vocalist. After two years of doing this, Martinez was asked to join the band, and 311 as we know it today was born. SA is married to the former Amy Steinbuch of Morristown, Tennessee USA.
311
Martinez brought something new to the 311 table: turntables. He became the band's official DJ, but it did not affect his vocal duties. Songs from the demos were later re-written with scratches.
Recent events
Martinez and band mate, Chad Sexton, were involved in a brawl with a drunken Scott Stapp formerly of the band Creed on Thanksgiving 2005 in a the hotelobby of Baltimore's Harbor Court Hotel while watching the Lakers game. Stapp made inappropriate remarks to SA's wife, which caused Chad to ask him not to disrespect the ladies present. Stapp then asked Chad to have a shot with him at the bar. Before the shots were even served, Stapp sucker-punched Chad. That punch grazed SA's wife, which got SA involved with the fight. They held Stapp down until security arrived. However, neither Sexton nor Martinez were held responsible for any wrongdoing in the brawl, as Stapp was intoxicated and belligerent. Martinez, however, did suffer a fractured knuckle and P-nut reopened a surgical scar. Despite the brawl, they were happy that the Lakers won.
