"Touch My Body" is a song co-written by American singer Mariah Carey, Christopher "Tricky" Stewart, Crystal "Cri$tyle" Johnson[8] and Terius "The-Dream" Nash for Carey's eleventh studio album, E=MC², and is the first single from the album. The single was produced by Carey, Stewart, and Nash. The song is Carey's eighteenth number one single on the Billboard Hot 100.[9]
Release and reception
The song was chosen as the lead single of the album during a vote with producer L.A. Reid and staff in Island Records.[10]Carey stated that the group "decided to just go with the fast-tempo and everybody kinda liked the song 'cause it's just fun and cute and sexy and sweet".[citation needed]
The song was transmitted digitally to radio stations on February 12 at 6:30pm ET for immediate airplay via All Access and made its debut on Los Angeles radio station Power 106.[11] "Touch My Body" premiered on Chicago radio station B96, ahead of schedule at 4:00pm.[12][13] The single officially went for adds on radio station playlists on February 19.[11][14]
Carey performed the song on Saturday Night Live on March 15 2008 and then again on March 24, the single's digital release date, during the live season premiere party of the hit MTV series The Hills.
Critical reception
Critics' reviews of the song have been generally positive. Billboard was quite positive, saying that "this sensual jam is 100% Mariah, packed with satisfying harmonic layers and hooky background 'oh's,' supersonic verses and a chorus as catchy as a winter sniffle",[15] and Blender stated that it was a "pop genius making genius pop".[16] Bill Lamb from About.com also gave "Touch My Body" a positive review, giving it 4 out of 5 stars, stating that the single "is simple, sexy elegance from one of the most enduring of pop stars".[17] Newsday also named it as the "Song of the Week", commenting that it was "the best opening single she's had since "Heartbreaker".[18] Digital Spy was also positive, saying "its cooing, sensual charms soon take hold, suggesting the wind's still very much behind the Carey comeback bandwagon".[19]
Some critics were less positive. Slant Magazine's Sal Cinquemani said that the single "isn't exactly filled with combustible energy and it lacks the full-throttle belting that accompanied the Return of the Voice three years ago, but it features all of the characteristics one expects from a latter-day Mariah track".[20] Rolling Stone gave it 3.5 stars in its March 6, 2008 issue, as they felt that "this hyperdirty single [has] Mariah's storied vocal range...blunted in favor of generic, highly digitized heavy breathing, [but it is] a spare, slick track composed mostly of synths and finger snaps".[21]
Music video
The music video was directed by Brett Ratner. Carey reported that Ratner was commisioned to direct and film the video due to the fact that he also directed Carey's videos for "I Still Believe", "Heartbreaker", "Thank God I Found You", "It's like That", and "We Belong Together".[22] In an interview with AllHipHop.com, Ratner said, "Mariah is musically at the top of her game and has never looked better... This will be our 6th music video we have collaborated on and definitely the best one yet visually, as well as musically. The video for "Touch My Body" is the perfect combination of fantasy and comedy with Mariah looking more beautiful than she has ever looked, ever."[22] The video was filmed at Lenny Kravitz's house. The video also stars Jack McBrayer from 30 Rock, a show that Carey is a fan of.[23]Carey appeared on MTV's TRL[24] and BET's 106 & Park on Wednesday, February 27, 2008, to premiere the video for "Touch My Body"; BET also played the video all day, every hour on the hour, until 106 & Park. VH1 posted a 45-second sneak peek on their blog on February 26, and subsequently posted the video in its entirety at midnight on February 27, 2008; the video was also posted on the Island Records website.[25][26][27] On March 5 the "Touch My Body" music video debuted at #1 on MTV's TRL countdown.[28] On March 14 the "Touch My Body" music video took the #1 spot on BET's 106 & Park "Top 10 Live" countdown.
Remixes
An official remix has been released, which features Rick Ross & The-Dream, and another official remix which only features Cam'Ron and next club mixes by Seamus Haji and Craig C and R. Kelly did a bootleg mix himself in April 2008. Also, an official remix by David Morales was to be released, but due to scheduling conflicts, Carey was unable to record new vocals. The unofficial remix can be found on his MySpace page.
Chart performance
Following the song's February 12 digital transmission, after only a day's worth of airplay, "Touch My Body" entered the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart at #78 the chart week of February 23, 2008.[29] It also debuted at #57 on the Billboard Hot 100 as the "Hot Shot" debut a week later.[30] It entered the Canadian Hot 100 at #97[31] and has peaked at #2.
On April 2 2008, it was announced that "Touch My Body" became Carey's 18th #1 single on the Billboard Hot 100, pushing her to second place among artists with the most #1 singles in the rock era and first place as a solo artist in the same category, surpassing Elvis Presley. The achievement was attributed to a record-breaking digital sales debut, as 286,000 copies were sold in its first week of availability.[32]
In the United World Chart, the song has peaked at number two so far. It became her eighteenth top ten hit on the chart. This is also Mariah Carey's 26th top ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100.
