Sabrina Aircraft Manufacturing is an American manufacturer of experimental aerospace vehicles. It is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. S.A.M. is notable because it was founded by female who, at age 11, developed a way of detecting dirty bombs from general aviation aircraft. [[1]], at age 12 conducted the first Young Eagle Flight with an FAA Administrator [[2]], at age 13, became an aircraft engine manufacturer. [[3]] and at age 14, became the youngest U.S. born person to ever solo a powered aircraft in North America. [[4]]
On Janaury 11, 2008, SAM's founder became the youngest aircraft builder (male or female) to have an aircraft certified in a category "other than amateur-built." [[5]]
The first S.A.M. Airworthiness Certificate was issued by the FAA on January 11, 2008 in Sugar Grove, Illinois by the Manufacturing Inspection Satellite Office. (The FAA MISO inspects newly constructed manufactured aircraft whereas the FAA FSDO inpsects newly constructed amateur-built aircraft.)
Models range from the the 2006 E-LSA two-seat, single-engine Mark 1 Aeroplane (maiden flight January 15, 2008)
to the 2008 experimental single-seat single-engine Parsec 1 space exploration vehicle with a projected maiden flight of June 27, 2018 from the Pecos County West Texas Spaceport.
Engines range from the 100 horsepower, 4-cylinder boxer O-200A variant, to the 2008 Heather 1 plasma engine.
History
- Although ground was broken in Pecos County, Texas in mid-2005, actual production was not commenced until 2006 in Cook County, Illinois. Sabrina Aircraft Manufacturing shifted design and minor manufacturing tasks to Kane County, Illinois in early 2008 with hopes of eventually expanding into Middlesex County, Massachusetts by mid-2010.
