See No Evil is a 2006 horror film directed by Gregory Dark, written by Dan Madigan, produced by Joel Simon, and starring professional wrestler Kane (Glen Jacobs). It is the first major film produced by WWE Films and was released by Lions Gate Films on May 19, 2006.

The film went through many different working titles before the final title of See No Evil was chosen. The original working title of the film was Eye Scream Man, but was later changed to Goodnight before settling on See No Evil.

According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Jacobs has signed a contract to act in a sequel for the movie.

The MPAA gave the movie an R rating for strong gruesome violence and gore throughout, language, sexual content and some drug use.

Plot

A group of delinquents with a police officer clean the Blackwell Hotel to fill their community service. Unfortunately for the group, they are not aware that psychopath Jacob Goodnight (Glen Jacobs) is also in the hotel. The psychopath is a man shot by the officer, and has a rusty steel plate screwed in his head and sharp blade-like fingernails. Goodnight then begins to hunt them down.

There are occasional flashbacks to Jacob's childhood, suggesting his killing sprees are owed to abuse. Some of the deaths in the film include a cell phone into a girl's throat, a man tortured to death, and a woman eaten by dogs. In the end Jacob Goodnight is thrown out of the hotel window with a pole through his eye socket.

WWE backing

This is the first movie to be released by WWE Film productions, thus WWE was adamant about promoting it. Before the movie's release WWE ran a storyline involving Kane being haunted by "voices" and the idea that something would happen on May 19, the release date of the movie. Kane became so paranoid about the date that he began attacking anyone who he heard say the date, including his tag team partner The Big Show and G4's Attack of the Show! host Kevin Pereira, whom he strongly warned not to mention the date before walking off the set at the end of the interview. On the May 8 edition of WWE Raw, three co-stars of See No Evil were interviewed by Todd Grisham. They all talked about how Kane was so (kayfabe) hard to work with and how his on-screen movie murders made him happy. During this segment Todd asked a male co-star, Michael Pagan, about the release date of the movie. Unaware of Kane's reaction to it, Michael then went on to say the date, which caused Kane to enter the area of the interview and make the two female co-stars, Christina Vidal and Samantha Noble, scream in terror while Kane choked Pagan to the ground.

After the film was released Kane revealed that the reason he hated the date May 19 was because "his family was killed on that day in a tragic accident".

Many world-wide members of the press were invited to a red carpet ceremony for the release of the movie, which also included various other WWE superstars. Interviews were given by superstars, including Shawn Michaels, John Cena, Kurt Angle, Candice Michelle, Chris Benoit, Chris Masters and Rey Mysterio commenting on the movie.

A segment on RAW showed footage from inside the movie theatre while the movie was playing. Footage was shown of the audience cringing, hiding and covering their eyes during the movie. Interviews were later given to members of the audience, which had members of the audience describing their experience. Some said they could not watch it, others said they cringed; most reviews were positive.

Reaction by critics

Critical reaction has been extremely poor. As of December 24 2006, See No Evil has earned an 8% critic rating on Rottentomatoes and a 17% rating on Metacritic, indicating "extreme dislike or disgust". Many reviewers cite genre clichés, a poor script, and bad directing. The movie's audience rates the film a little higher, with a 4.9/10 rating on the IMDb.

Box Office

The movie opened with an estimated $4.35 million in box office sales for that weekend. The film was sixth in the weekend box office totals. After two weeks, the movie stood at over $9.8 million. The movie's final domestic gross stands at $15,032,800. The movie's worldwide gross stands at $15,387,513.

DVD Release

See No Evil was released on DVD on November 28.The DVD included audio commentary by writer Dan Madigan, director Gregory Dark, co-executive producer Jed Blaugrund and Kane. See No Evil was the #9 most rented/purchased movie making over $3 Million dollars. The movie eventually made $16.5 million in 8 weeks. The UK DVD Release was on March 26th 2007

Trivia

  • The film's taglines, "This Summer, Evil Gets RAW" is a reference to the famous WWE Raw television program and franchise brand. Kane was a prominent fixture of the RAW roster during the making and release of See No Evil. He is currently in the SmackDown! brand.
  • Sgt. Frank Williams, a key officer from the film's opening scene, is named after Frank Williams, a beloved WWF enhancement talent of the 1970's and 1980's. Williams is also known for being the first guest on "Rowdy" Roddy Piper's weekly talk show, "Piper's Pit".
  • In one scene shown midway through the movie, artwork depicting Stephanie McMahon is visible in the background.
  • To explain Kane's absence on WWE television while he was away shooting the film, the WWE made up a storyline where Kane's larynx was crushed by Gene Snitsky with a chair, something Kane did months before to Shawn Michaels.
  • Several stars in the movie mention during interviews not having to act to seem afraid of seven foot Kane - indeed one of his co-stars only came up to his sternum. Reportedly, when the cast was first introduced to each other, the director told Jacobs to remain seated: two of his co-stars were already so uneasy around him they wouldn't go near him.
  • When asked how he played psychopaths so well, Jacobs simply replied: "I'm not acting."
  • On the March 12, 2007 episode of RAW, Kane interfered in The Great Khali vs. Jeff Hardy match, attempting to use a hook and chain, similar to the weapon from the film, to attack Khali. Scaring Khali away, Kane then used the hook to flip over Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler's announce table. The use of the hook and chain was an obvious reference to the movie. The hook and chain also made an appearance at WWE Wrestlemania 23 in Kane's match against The Great Khali, but was not much of a factor in the bout.
  • At the end of the movie after about 30 seconds into the credits a scene showing Jacob dead and with a hole where his eye was a dog comes over and pees in his eye socket. During the commentary on the DVD Kane said (jokingly) When he finds this dog he's going to do something bad to it.
  • Former WWE writer Dan Madigan, as well as the screenwriter for See No Evil, had reportedly told an online radio show that Vince McMahon suggested a scene where Kane would masturbate on screen and it would show that he had a 36-inch penis. Madigan said he didn't like the idea and out of all the people in the room, he was the only one who spoke out against it.
