Pioneering war metal band Blasphemy performing in 2017

War metal[1][2][3] (also known as war black metal[2] or bestial black metal)[3] is an aggressive,[2] cacophonous[1] and chaotic[1][2] subgenre of blackened death metal,[4] described by Rock Hard journalist Wolf-Rüdiger Mühlmann as "rabid"[2] and "hammering".[2]

Important influences include first wave black metal band Sodom,[1][2] first wave black metal/death metal band Possessed[2] as well as old grindcore, black and death metal bands like Repulsion,[1][2] Autopsy,[2] Sarcófago[1][2][3][5] and the first two Sepultura releases.[2][5]

Academic Nicolae Sfetcu credited the earliest releases in the style as being released by Brazilian bands Sepultura, Holocausto and Sarcófago, while also crediting Canadian band Blasphemy and their 1990 debut album Fallen Angel of Doom as the "starting point" of the genre.[6]

War metal bands include Blasphemy,[1][2][5] Archgoat,[2] Impiety,[2] In Battle,[7] Bestial Warlust[8] and Zyklon-B.[9]

Though Blasphemy are commonly referred to as the first War Metal band, the style was portrayed in the mid to later 1980's by bands such as Sarcofago and the first albums by Sepultura and Holocausto. Blasphemy's 1990 debut album Fallen Angel of Doom is considered the starting point of this sub-genre and has been expanded on and changed quite dramatically by bands such as The Meads of Asphodel, Bestial Warlust, Conqueror and Axis of Advance/Sacramentary Abolishment.
