Rabbi Leibel Tropper was born in Flatbush, Brooklyn where his parents sent him to a number of yeshivas. After finishing high school he spent a few years getting smicha and then spent a few years travelling the globe getting smicha again from other types of rabbis. Finally he got a job at Shema Yisrael Yeshiva and then at Ohr Somayach Yeshiva in Jerusalem. In 1980 he moved to Monsey, NY and helped found a branch of Ohr Somayach Monsey.

He is a cousin of Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach.
