Derailment at Ropley, 2006

[edit]

A passenger train from Alton to Alresford was derailed at Ropley on 25 July 2006. The train was formed of a Class 117 diesel multiple unit, whose front bogey derailed on points approaching Platform 2 at Ropley station. No injuries resulted, and the train and track suffered limited damage.[1]

A subsequent inquiry identified the cause of the incident as an error by the signalman at Ropley Signal box, who changed the points while the train was travelling over them. Various recommendations were made to prevent a repeat of the incident [1]

Passenger fatality at Alresford, 2007

[edit]

On 1 December 2007, a passenger fell from the platform at Alresford as he tried to board a departing train..[2] The coroner concluded that the death was accidental and that he was satisfied that the emergency procedures, put in place by the Watercress Line, were satisfactory.[3]

Fire at Ropley, 2010

[edit]
12049 in Day Aggregates livery, destroyed in a fire at Ropley

On 26 July 2010, a major fire occurred in the newly constructed Carriage & Wagon workshop at Ropley.[4] The cause of the fire was found to be an electrical fault and it was estimated that 50% of the building had been destroyed.[5] Nobody was injured in the accident.[5] The adjacent Boiler Shop was not damaged by the blaze as the building's fire door was closed, however its contents did sustain minor smoke damage.[6]

A vintage wooden LSWR restaurant carriage, a British Railways Mark 1 carriage (Tourist Second Open, S4712), a British Rail Class 11 diesel shunter 12049,[7] and the tender of U-Class 31806 were inside the shed at the time.[6][8][9][10] The vehicles, plus tools and equipment, were lost in the fire.[11][12] The carriages and diesel shunter were irreparably damaged and were subsequently scrapped,[13][14] but the tender was repaired and reunited with 31806.[15] The facility was subsequently rebuilt.
