List of standardized tests in the United States

[edit]

Orlady, just a note to let you know I appreciate all the "hunting" you've done for List of standardized tests in the United States. The school-specific table is filling up with information nicely, and it should be useful to a lot of people. – Freechild (BoomCha) 09:07, 2 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your expertise is needed

[edit]

This guy/gal -- Gerovital1 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) -- just removed a chunk of List of unaccredited institutions of higher learning here. Looking through his/her contribs, I found that s/he wrote this article: VAE (Validation des Acquis de l'Experience). I was going to put an {{advert}} or {{hoax}} tag on it, but I'd like for someone more familiar with accreditation-ducking schemes than I am to look at it first. --Dynaflow babble 18:41, 6 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

To maintain flow, here are subsequent messages at Dynaflow's talk page:

I actually know nothing about the VAE procedure, but a little web research suggests it might be real, although the article's reference to the controversial http://www.sorbon.fr/ raises some big red flags. At least I don't think it's a hoax. I edited the article a little. --orlady 20:06, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

The article appears to be what it says it is, a quick direct translation. I found a similar article in the French Wikipedia and created a link. --Gmosaki 07:38, 9 July 2007 (UTC)--

Hi, VAE is real. There is an owner of some non-wonderful institutions that has been using it the last couple years or so to provide a thin veener of respectability to his operation. His non-wonderful institutions are not really French and he does not really have degree granting authority from France. It has been difficult getting information on VAE because I don't understand French but, I assume that what is there now is correct. See the Robert de Sorbon listing at the ODA site. [1] I know only slightly more than is on the ODA list from some discussions on http://www.degreediscussions.com and http://forums.degreeinfo.com as well as some visits possibly from the owner himself to those sights. Thank you for your comment re the talk page. I have replied therein to your comment, I think from what I understand of the U of S it is good as is, and the other SK colleges could have their own template...Post Secondary Institutes I left a couple of source links for you to have a quick perusal to see if you agree. Confederate government of Kentucky

[edit]

Thank you for your comments on my FA nom of Confederate government of Kentucky. I acknowledge that lead-writing is probably my weakest Wikipedia skill. Nonetheless, I have tried to edit the lead to address the specific concern you mentioned. If there are other concerns that need to be addressed, please let me know. I hope you will be able to support this nomination at some point. Acdixon 14:52, 19 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry if I come across as a pest, but I'd again like to solicit your comments regarding this article. The FA vote is quite close right now, and I would like to take additional steps to garner your support if possible. Please leave your comments on the article on the FA nomination page. Thanks. A HUGE Apology

[edit]

You may have noticed a fleeting block, imposed by myself. I regret to advise you that in attempting to block a disruptive editor I alighted on the wrong editor in the article history... I am very sorry for any embarrassment and stain upon your record (which I haven't looked at, but I will simply assume that it was previously untainted). Please by all means keep this message on your talkpage if you feel the need. Again, sorry. Mark (LessHeard vanU) 21:35, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

For the sake of sparing the ageism talk page, I want to address an ongoing issue I'm have with your edit style. I find the way you posted your disagreement with the ER quote to be argumentative, combative and completely anti-collaborative. Is there a more productive way you can frame your apparently contemptuous disdain for the youth-related articles you continuously edit this way? – Freechild (¡!¡!¡!¡) 20:54, 30 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

RE: JC city limits

[edit]

I have an official Kingsport city limits map that shows the city limits for Kingsport stopping at the Sullivan/Washington county line at the I-26/Eastern Star Rd interchange. JC city limit picks up on the other side of that county line. There is no other location that the JC limits get close to the county line.

Whether this is considered official enough, or how to cite it, I'm not sure. SO if you feel it needs to be reverted go ahead. Civil Engineer III 15:00, 31 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You are brave to work on the song lists knowing full well that others would love to see all such things deleted. If you want to save the "List of car crash songs" you might try adding citations for as many of the songs that you can. The "Further reading" section that I have added might help you get started. I did something similar a while back with Songs about school--that list still needs work, but it hasn't come under attack again...yet. If you look at that as an example you'll have some idea what I'm suggesting. I wish I could help a bit more, but I really can't. Good luck. -MrFizyx 20:40, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimania in Atlanta!

[edit]

Hi! I noticed your involvement on U.S. South-related articles, categories and WikiProjects, and I wanted to let you know about a bid we're formulating to get next year's Wikimania held in Atlanta! If you would like to help, be sure to sign your name to the "In Atlanta" section of the Southeast team portion of the bid if you're in town, or to the "Outside Atlanta" section if you still want to help but don't live in the city or the suburbs. If you would like to contribute more, please write on my talk page, the talk page of the bid, or join us at the #wikimania-atlanta IRC chat on freenode.org. Have a great day!

P.S. While this is a template for maximum efficiency, I would appreciate a note on my talk page so I know you got the message, and what you think. This is time-sensitive, so your urgent cooperation is appreciated. :) Mike H. I did "That's hot" first! 07:33, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Orlady, I have been observing the Oregon State Degree Authority website closely since 2004. From the beginning, the website referred to some school as degree mills, some as unaccredited schools and some others with different names and status. Madison university has never been referred to as degree mill by this website. Clearly, it is a mistake when you wrote that it is a degree mill. I just tried many times to be reasonable and honest to everyone. What is wrong with that? Do you need a confirmation letter from Oregon State to confirm that? I can get one and post it here or send (in pdf form) to your email address. Regards, Orgentleman —Preceding unsigned comment added by 151.199.250.29 (talkcontribs)

Scouting

[edit]

Hi- I noted your edits to several of the Scouting by state articles, and I though I would let you know why this was set up in this manner. Each state article is in a BSA and GSUSA council category in order to promote better council articles. The preference is to expand the council section within an article until it can be split into a good article. Before we came to this arrangement, we had all sorts of camp, unit, district and council articles that were continuously going up for deletion or merge. Currently, the BSA has 306 councils and the GSUSA has 312; that is a lot of management for a relatively small group of editors. We have this convention documented at WikiProject Scouting/Local Scouting articles. I think we decided that this pretty much applied to the GSUSA as well; unfortunately, we only have a few active GSUSA editors right now. And yes, those state articles need work, but it is much better than it was a year ago. --Gadget850 ( Ed) 21:08, 10 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

common surnames

[edit]

Hi, I noticed you undid my deletion of an unsourced section. With such lists, when someone makes up one, it is worthless, and I do not feel this should not be included. This is different from statements within text in a non-list article without a source. The section even just gave a name as a source.

You might be interested in checking out the Doe River article within the next few weeks (as I get the time) --- I recently went river tubing with a cousin and a waterproof camera and I will be figuring out the best way (a gallery perhaps) to display some photos from the perspective of actually being on the river. It is really too bad that I didn't have the camera wound up to frame; I missed a rare shot at a deer crossing the river about thirty feet downstream of me.

I am also planning to make some digital photos this week at the Over Mountain Victory Trail Assocaition dinner at Sycamore Shoals --- should be plenty of opportunity to capture some images of Revoluntary War re-enactors at the fort...Bee Cliff River Slob 05:09, 23 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It wasn't vandalism, it was removing "rantings" from someone who himself is vandalising many-a-page here on Wikipedia. To get his way and to "spout off", he posts 10,000+ words on his talk page. Wikipedia has no place for rantings, misinformed rantings at that, from a user who refuses to listen to the rules and has come VERY close to being blocked. BCRS needs to learn that he can't continuously add sections to a page over and over and over that have been removed by admins and not get in trouble. He also needs to learn that when he doesn't get his way, he can't launch a ranting personal attack on his talk page, hence my revert. I would keep a very close eye on BCRS, as he is nothing but trouble. - NeutralHomer T:C 14:16, 23 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
....and before I get the Assume Good Faith lecture, I did with BCRS and it got me nowhere. - NeutralHomer T:C 14:16, 23 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
As you can see by removing his "warnings" (for reverting his slanted vandalism from political figures article pages) and talking to you here....I was reported to AIV...almost 6 hours after the fact. This is what happens all the time with BCRS. Hence why I just gave up on the guy. - NeutralHomer T:C 19:34, 23 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • The post on AIV was quickly removed by an admin. Still, you see what I mean. When BCRS is called on and warned for his slanted posts on political figures article pages, he writes 2,000+ words on his talk page saying why he is right (and isn't) and mass warns the reverting user(s) and reports them to AIV. This is an ongoing battle with many Eastern Tennessee political figures pages, conversative and/or Christian radio stations, among other Tennessee pages. The user has come a couple times this close to being blocked for his edits. - NeutralHomer T:C 19:53, 23 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wikilinking scientists

[edit]

Hi there. I noticed you added some wikilinks to Willard Gibbs Award back in August. Just thought you might like to have another look, as we have articles on quite a few of them. It is always worth wikilinking just in case, and even redlinks can often be turned blue if you search and then create a redirect from the "name+initial+surname" link to the full name or whatever has been used for the article title. It can be great fun doing this! Carcharoth 12:02, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Orlady - you wrote: In the past, I have been jumped on for removing templates that associated articles with other Wikipedians' pet projects (notably, when I tried to remove individual plants such as Spruce Pine from WikiProject Alabama), so I have concluded that it is best to "let sleeping dogs lie." Is there a policy or guideline somewhere that articulates and supports the view that "individual state stubs [or individual state project templates] are only used when something is in that one or up to four states - in this case the two national stubs are more appropriate"?

Not in so many words, but there are reasons which relate to other Manual of Style-type guidelines. It relates most closely to style guidelines at Wikipedia:Stub#Categorising stubs which says: If an article overlaps several stub categories, more than one template may be used, but it is strongly recommended that only those relating to the subject's main notability be used. A limit of three or, if really necessary, four stub templates is advised. In the case of an article like Prairie Pothole Region, if one state-specific template was used, it would imply that all eight state of province-spoecific templates should be applied - if it is a North Dakota region, it is equally a Saskatchewan region and a South Dakota region, and so on. Although it does make it fractionally harder for articles like this one to be easily found by editors, it does stop them from simply ending up as "stub farms" with half a dozen or more templates. It's worth noting that the only articles in the more general Category:United States geography stubs and Category:Canada geography stubs that haven't been further subcategorised are articles about big regions extending across several states or provinces.

Your other comment, about stub templates and WikiProjects, is also worth a mention. Stub templates aren't controlled by any specific WikiProjects (other than being looked after and organised by Wikiproject Stub sorting) - they are designed for use by any editors in Wikipedia. Although there are often WikiProjects on the same themes as particular stub types and are heavily used by those projects, those templates don't indicate a wikiproject's "ownership" of an article (that is done by banner templates on article talk pages). I can understand WP members getting tetchy about templates being removed from "their' articles, though - as a stub sorter I frequently get comments from editors within WikiProjects about what they see is incorrect stubbing of articles.

Hope that helps :) Grutness...wha? 02:09, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Tennessee Association of Christian Schools, and it appears to be very similar to another wikipedia page: Category:Tennessee Association of Christian Schools. It is possible that you have accidentally duplicated contents, or made an error while creating the page— you might want to look at the pages and see if that is the case.

This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. CorenSearchBot 02:48, 11 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I know we may not always agree, but if you have a few moments, I could use some backup at that talk page. An anon user/new user insists on putting in uncited/unreferened data that I really don't consider relevant anyway. Hey, I wrote on the discussion page for Bible college. Like I said, most articles that are specific to a country or region need to cite that info under a subheading. That's the biggest problem with TCE. Also, things like, "Bible colleges produce a large percentage of North American evangelical missionaries and serve as a primary training center for local church leadership," are things I cannot find in your sources, and therefore shouldn't have been re-added. If you can find it for me then I apologise. If there's one thing I'm good at, it's "cutting the fat" per se from articles. It's the well-trained history major in me :-). Talk to you soon!Aepoutre 21:12, 10 September 2007 (UTC) Oh, and I forgot to mention that, just because ABHE doesn't merit a subheading in your opinion doesn't mean it doesn't, and even if it doesn't, you can't just delete the subheading and leave all that ABHE and historical information under a programs heading. Most of what I was doing earlier was "wikifying," that is, actually adding relevant headings rather than just establishing a long blob of text on a wiki page. Aepoutre 21:16, 10 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there, I re-added some of your info based on your specific citations. Thanks for the help. One of the cool things about Wikipedia is the assumption of Good Faith. I did remove some of your info, but please understand that it was not a personal attack. We are all here to make Wikipedia better, even if it means removing and adding information, citing more specifically, and quoting when necessary. The point of citing, of course, is so that someone can check a source, so I do appreciate your more specific references. While being concise and referencing specifically can be annoying, and often requires others' help, it does make for better writing. Thanks again for your

contributions! The Bible college article is really shaping up! Aepoutre 14:17, 11 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Bible colleges

[edit]

Orlady, please keep in mind when tagging articles with the Category:Bible colleges category that I created, that if a college is liberal arts then it is not a bible college. For example, Ambrose University College is a Liberal arts college with a Seminary. Neither are a Bible college, which is distict from the former two for reasons I am willing to explain if necessary. Thanks, though! Aepoutre 14:06, 18 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Really, really bad haikus from a new admin

[edit]

Setting new lows in thank-you spam:

Good week (RfA), bad week (Appleton's fiasco).

First I want to thank you for your support in my RfA and elsewhere over the last year (which has sometimes been a little rocky).

Second, I was very disappointed by the whole famousamericans.net fiasco. My goal was to get a discussion started in a centralized place of a problem that's been growing evermore out of control, then reach a community consensus. As the discussion evolved, I came to see that blacklisting was a good idea, along with then whitelisting good faith additions by our regular editors. I also thought the whole link removal had to be done painstakingly as I was doing with the other 270 or so domains. Little did I anticipate that one editor would go into human-bot mode and just start yanking them out 5 per minute -- especially after his earlier Arbcom case. Call me Pandora on that one. I'm not sure what I'm going to do from here with that whole situation.

Finally, can I interest you in standing for adminship? You are truly an editor's editor and I think you could use the additional tools. I sense you're not big into vandal-stalking but some of the deletions could really benefit from your judicious editor's eye in closing? So how about it?

I am inclined to undo all of the Us and NAs. What is the difference between the two. When you add text the sort is done alphabetically instead of numerically and thus 10-19 come between 1 and 2. Alabama and the US map

[edit]

Yes exactly what I thought. See my edits to See my edits to List of museums in Alabama. This is how they should look I think rather than just a directory -this is what categories are for. I also fear they will deleted if they are not made like this -after all categories are for lists. I suggest people develop each one like my exmaple. But I was adding the smaller template and I had my edits reverted. I haven't got time to go through every one but I can do something gradually. What do you think about that page? ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ Talk? 22:41, 7 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I had nothing to do with the museum pages intially -in fact I initally saw in on the new pages and asked the splitter what was the point in doing it when categories do the same job? I also frowned upon those symbol tables and argued that this is an encyclopedia where comprehensiveness and information given is more important than oversized map navigation boxes and symbol tables. The other user disagreed and said they weren't for encyclopedic purposes but for organization and I said this was wrong -this is an encyclopedia where most pages should provide information. Now don't give me a lecture on how to go about writing or formatting articles. i know and knew exactly what should be done but I was stopped from sorting out the mess which could have been avoided. ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ Talk? 11:31, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Revert in "List of Intersting Names"

[edit]

Hi. I saw you reverted my entry of Caius Julius Caesar into List of intersting names. It is not very clear to me why you did this, so I'd like to ask you to clarify the points which you believe merited deletition of my entry.

My point of view is this:

  • The Person Caius Julius Caesar himself is notable as a member of a national legislature (The german Bundestag), as per Wikipedia:Notability_(people)#Lists_of_people, section Politicians.
  • He does have an interesting name (I think we can agree on that) closely resembling the roman emperor who went by the same name.

So since he's notable and he's got an interesting name (which is verified by a source) the inlcusion in the List of interesting names is only logical to me.

As for the "source of his name" (from your revert summary) I do not know what you mean by that. I suppose the source of his name were his parents. (Note: Here in Germany, changing ones name is extremely difficult. Save for a few select exceptions, you're stuck with the name your parents gave you).

So, what's your point of view on this matter?

Thanks --Funkysapien (talk) 00:43, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

(RE your answer on my discussion page:) I see. Ok, I will find links to some of the media attention he got (I remember reding one article or the other, but can't link it from memory right now). As for language, I fear this will be mostly german references. Will you delete it again If I'm only able to cite references in German? --Funkysapien (talk) 11:56, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thanks for your clarification. Btw, I'm still curious what you meant by "source of his name". (But, this is only a minor point and no matter of urgency at all, so if you're busy just disregard this question). Greetings. --Funkysapien (talk) 14:26, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. No, as I said, changing names is insanely hard in germany, and his website confirms that the family name "Caesar" dates back several generations of his family (I'd have too look again to see how many generations) and that his name was given to him by is parents. It also says there that he actually is "Caius Julis Caesar II.", with with father being the first (his son is the third). Ok, I admit the statement that he was intentionally named after the historical figure Ceasar was an assumption on my part, I'll leave that out (if I find no sources backing it). Btw, thank you for the pleasant and constructive conversation, it has been a nice change of pace for once. --Funkysapien (talk) 01:14, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What exactly is wrong with our extracurriculars section? Your comment states that useful details are commingled with ephemeral details that would interest only the persons named. Your moving of the external link to the end is in conformity with the general rule. It does not address the underlying problem that the list is so egregiously inadequate as to be embarrassing in its failure to touch the subject. I was trying to direct the readers to what is plainly a better source of information -- and their links by town names and subject matter are awesome -- at least until somebody gathers all that stuff together in Wiki. This is going to be a very big job. Of course, you could help out by bringing that information into the Wiki list. Moving the external link to the bottom may be the rule, but it may not help our esteemed and uninformed readers. Something to think about. Best to you. 7&6=thirteen (talk) 03:05, 15 January 2008 (UTC)Stan[reply]

The woeful condition of the list itself can be cured. The link I put in is an (almost) complete list for the whole state. Of course, it will take time to work through all that information, as it is organized by city link and then by three different types of museums. Since there is no 'master list' accessible through the web that I can find, it will be somewhat tedious -- although it is doable. Yesterday I personally added 150 museums to the Wikipedia list. OTOH, I've now got to actually work at making a living.
Thanks for the information and invite. Best to you. 7&6=thirteen (talk) 21:38, 15 January 2008 (UTC)Stan[reply]

Dubai Cup x Dubai Tournament x Dubai Football Challenge

[edit]

Hi, Orlady. I`m insistent that Dubai Football Challenge (in Brazil known as literally Dubai Tournament) should have a "see also" link to Dubai Cup and vice versa (initially, here in Brazil Dubai Cup was called Dubai Tournament too) because both competitions are similar between them, participated in the two tournaments Brazilian teams and both competitions were disputed in the same week, in Dubai. The press here has been a little confusing reporting the two tournaments, due to the similarity of names. In lusophone version, both competitions articles has "see also" among themselves.

Thanks for your attention. Evandro Davis (talk) 00:54, 16 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I want to link the name Mohammed bin Rashid International Football Championship (the official name of the tournament) with Dubai Cup because in several countries with football culture the tournament's name isn't known by the official name (this tournament's name is a tribute to emirates' current ruler, Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, taht is also the Prime Minister and Vice President of the United Arab Emirates), but by Dubai Cup. And people will probably search the tournament by Dubai Cup.

Thank you for answer me. Evandro Davis (talk) 02:32, 16 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As you seem balanced too

[edit]

Dear Orlady, I have posted the following comment on TallMagic'talk page. I found you both in the discussion of Bircham International University article. Bothe of you seemed balanced to me. So copying the same message on your page too. But if its illegal at wiki in some way, then forgive me for it . Please do not take the following as spam either. I just tried to save my time and internet billing cost.

Dear TallMagic, First I want to feel free in my conversation with you, so if you do not insist, I would like to conceal my full introduction. I am an international reader of wikipedia. I love it. Coincidentally, I am an ex-student of Bircham International University. I am from a very poor country and also from a poor family. This university gave me the chance to study fully free of cost, even without any admission form fees. They had their investigation about my will to study and quality to avail 100% scholarship before they grant me such. Now after availing the education (not necessarily the degree) I have gained much strength to read and learn more. I am doing a better job in a better field. In fact I am involved with some good international researches. In our country, distance education is like a sin! So I had to face too much hatred too about the way I'm gaining knowledge. But at the end of the day, when my performance improved, my wounds healed to some extent. Dear sir/madam, if wikipedia is meant only for reading of the US or other very first class countries I do not have anything to say. But if you say this encyclopedia should reach every corner of the world for every one, then I must say whenever I read the article Bircham International University, my head bows down in shame in reminds me of the hatred of those that hate distance education in my country no matter which institute is providing it - Harvard or University of London. May be there are many information that describes the article very correctly for all, but not necessarily able to make equally clear impression for people from different places.

Though the current condition of the article has changed, and I have no formal objection about it. But to make wikipedia a truly international encyclopedia, shouldn't the articles be more universal, I mean it should make more or less similar impression in almost all readers? Why do I feel that it is rather a negative kind of article than a neutral one? For example, its introduction could avoid both negative and positive information. I read the discussions and I saw some references are regarded for use and some are disregarded just because of the lack of language skill!! Shouldn't such people be expelled from an international encyclopedia editing? If you deny to accept wiki as universal or international, I do not have any problem. But if you don't, then do not write an article till you have the complete information. Many might think that what they know is complete, but, humbly, this should not be an attitude of any encyclopedian. We all can seek help for more perfection, thats no shame!

Finally, I found you as a positive or at least a balanced kind of editor and thus wrote so much. Please forgive me for such a long letter. But I /we want to read wiki as an international/universal encyclopedia, not a typical English culture patterned one. I have also gained distance/online education (fully free of any tuition fees) from Harvard and Johns Hopkins. The certificates and degrees are different, but knowledges were the same from all the places. Why should we ashame education/knowledge just for degree granting capacity? Isn't it a mill like attitude too, though legal mill!!

Forgive me for concealing my name. I am weak and I might not be able to tolerate any direct blow from any diehard (respectfully) wikipedian. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.112.199.51 (talk) 17:52, 1 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Coves

[edit]

I'm thinking about adding a table of notable coves to the Cove article. It'll include the cove's county/state and coordinate location, its appx. maximum depth, and a small notes section. If you can think of anything else to include, let me know. Bms4880 (talk) 22:24, 1 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think the coves in Sevier— Greenbrier Cove, Emerts Cove, and Richardson Cove— are created by the Middle Prong of the Little Pigeon's drainage basin, rather than the extreme erosion typical of limestone windows. There are a lot of coves in the Sequatchie Valley area, the most prominent of which would be Grassy Cove (in Cumberland Co.), Ladd Cove (in Marion), and Doran Cove (in Alabama). I'm not sure about elsewhere. North of Tenn./NC/Arkansas, there appears to be a preference for "hollow" rather than "cove." Bms4880 (talk) 20:58, 2 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

On Benno, Jr., again:

[edit]

First, thanks for your reply. Second, if my experience is telling, contributors to Wikipedia know their subject, and may be allowed more than the benefit of the doubt. Granted, during expansion of the Wolf's Head Society entry, I wasn't edited at first. Then, out of cyberspace came comments that promted me to take a more scholarly approach, eventually adding what I'll call "reference notes" instead of footnotes. Most of the entries on Yale secret societies pass my veracity test, so the implicit "peer review" here has its merits. Over time, the W.H.S entry was edited by other members of the Phelps Association, adding individuals unknown to me, but each an achiever in some realm. Back to general veracity of entries: for example, an early Wolf's Head Society entry maddened me so that I found the notes I'd made in 1983 from the Phelps Association Trust papers, Sterling Memorial Library, Yale University and, armed with the current Membership Directory, expanded the entry, with the help of a Yale architecture enthusiast (and there are many), along its present contours to its present size. I'd assume I have a counterpart who knows intimately and expertly The Brook and its history. However, there's a better than zero chance Benno, Sr. was a member of a gentlemen's club. I'd assume any that his boss, Jock Whitney, held sway - and that'd be every extant gentlemen's club on this planet - would had been glad to accept Benno, Sr.

Be well. —Preceding unsigned comment added by SLY111 (talkcontribs) 17:54, 6 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

On references

[edit]

You make a good point. My source material isn't available to the general public, so I've had less of a war, though many battles, with our "peers" here. Though this may appear too obvious, have you thought of contacting The Brook to ask someone on staff and responsible to the club president if Sr. was a member? My brief life as a competitive journalist prepared me well when I want such info; I call. Also, what would such a listing do to improve the entry? I would assume Sr. was member of a gentleman's club, particularly given the lack of a University of Texas Club of New York in midtown Manhattan, and knowing if it were The Brook or whatever wouldn't add to your entry. I say this as a past Governor at the National Arts Club.SLY111 (talk) 15:08, 8 February 2008 (UTC)SLY111[reply]

stubs

[edit]

Hello Orlady,

I noticed you marked an article as a stub using the {{stub}} template. Did you know that there are thousands of stub types that you can use to clarify what type of stub the article is? Properly categorizing stubs is important to the Wikipedia community because it helps various WikiProjects to identify articles that need expansion.

You can view the full list of stub types at WP:STUBS.

If you have questions about stub sorting, don't hesitate to ask! There is a wealth of stub information on the stub sorting WikiProject, and hundreds of stub sorters. Thanks! PamD (talk) 23:48, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please note

[edit]

Dear Orlady, I was watching the recent editing of the Bircham International University Article with huge interest, cos the a Bircham Graduate informed me about his editing and I saw the total thing there. I could not help writing to you after seeing the editing of you two, the unsigned user and you.

First the unsigned user changed the introducing paragraph saying that some part of it was the repeatition of the accreditation section. It was true. But you reverted it. Your claims were also true. But when you have source and correctly representing the info from that source, can't you quote it in a proper single place?

Second, the unsigned editor added an information to the policy section. This section was already containing sentence that attempts to draw some sort of conclusion,in that case it was a negative conclusion. An acknowledgement in a paper in an online peer-reviewed journal of the University of Iowa is not a bad reference at all. Yes, it attempts to draw some sort of conclusion, and in this case that is some positive conclusion. If you are neutral, why would you disregard the acknowledgement of the first peer reviewed electronic journal in social psychology world wide!

It is clear that the Bircham graduate is biased to make some positive impression about the university that gave him education. But are you biased too? Or it is preordained that the article should be one creating negative impression! I hope you won't tell me that disregarding some part of an article published in a peer reviewed journal is a modern approach.

What should the unsigned editor do? Revert your editing with some excuses on his side? But that should not be a civilizewd approach? That should not be an international standard of editing.

If I were you and truly neutral, I would omit or keep both kinds of information attempting some conclusion. I don't want to be, but I am surprised to see wikipedia as a partial place. I hope I'll be able to prove myself wrong, cos I loved this place!

Greetings from the past

[edit]

Hello Orlady, I am a relatively new member of Wikipedia and just saw your name for the first time on ANI. I was a bit confused at first, but then I remembered where I have met you before. I was once (I think 1999/2000) active in ODP as "scheuerm", initially in /Sci/Math/Logic, then for some time in /Sci and /World/Deutsch, and then I think I was degraded for insufficient activity, or something like that. Eventually I lost interest in the project. I see you are still listed in /Sci /Science.

Dealing with you was always a pleasure, and so I thought I'd just deliver you some greetings from your past. Very rarely (less than once a year) I play with the thought of applying for an ODP account just to have a look at the forums and see what has changed. --Hans Adler (talk) 23:46, 10 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: WP:Verifiability and the matter of Research Results vs. Revealed Truth

[edit]

Redundancies (e.g. beginning each paragraph with "research indicates") make the article too wordy instead of being crisp and concise. Citations show what research supports the information in the article. Vague terms of size or quantity are unnecessary, redundant, and weasel words (e.g. "some," "a variety/number/majority of," "several," "a few" "many," "any," and "all." -- Craigtalbert (talk) 00:12, 11 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Hartal

[edit]

The Columbia Pacific University article experiences infrequent disruption by IP addresses and single-purpose accounts. Mr. Hartal (don't call him anything other than Mr unless you want a lecture, he's a stickler for formality) was the most tendentious of them. These editors seem to come in clusters - I suspect, but cannot prove, offsite canvassing, likely on a closed mailing list. I'm inclined to let him rant on the talkpage, and perhaps request semi-protection if the IP disruption gets too bad. I'll keep an eye on the page for a few weeks. AMC

[edit]

However, if you persist in adding unsourced personal opinions such as "Some have suggested that the channel's acronym could now stand for American Movie Channel or All Movie Channel since most of the movies they air aren't classics whatsoever," your edits are likely to be reverted and sooner or later your account will be blocked. I added four or five sources backing up the statement, that's what I'd been working on when you bonked me before I could finish. It was sort of depressing -- a lot of people besides me have noticed AMC's downhill slide into the toilet and are equally (if not moreso) frustrated than I. --Ragemanchoo (talk) 06:12, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I see you have actively discussed the nominees, but have not voted. Is everyone waiting for everyone else to vote. We need voters for the system to work.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 01:04, 16 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

County navboxes

[edit]

You may have noticed: most of my Wikipedia work is with these navboxes. I create these templates nationwide (look just recently, I've made some in Washington, and overall I made virtually all of the Kentucky ones), and the Tennessee ones were just a few more. Of course there's no prohibition on the creation of new templates :-) Nyttend (talk) 05:57, 16 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

And by the way: regardless of whether cities and towns are governmentally identical, please do not merge their listings. Nyttend (talk) 05:58, 16 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've replied to your points on the discussion. Nyttend (talk) 04:28, 17 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

B. Carroll Reese

[edit]

Thanks for showing me that. I was reading http://rumormillnews.com/fedres.htm and thought I'd get an update on him but ... for the life of me could not bring that article up using search Hutcher (talk) 06:39, 17 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Redirect of Mien

[edit]

Hi there, I have redirected this page to Mien American because this article already exists and is better formatted. Also, the title better reflects the subject of both articles, ie Mien people who have emigrated to the USA. The text of the original Mien article is in the history here and if any of it is useful, could be integrated into the Mien American article. My mistakes

[edit]

Thank you for brining this to my attention I feel as if the problem has been corrected. I have noted this and ask for your complete forgiveness if I have caused you any hardship, pain, and/or sorrow. If you would like a full explanation of my actions I will be fully willing to disclose that information. --Jayson (talk) 23:08, 17 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
