Populated places in Slovenia

Thanks to your amazing consistant work on Slovenian places Category:Populated places in Slovenia now has over 4000 articles. Would you approve of a split by region or municipality? How do you think the should be split, by statistical region? Dr. Blofeld ^{White cat} 08:56, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

Back to the problem of Slovenia not having strictly established regions. My personal opinion is that the Municipalities are to small a division to grant splitting the category into one for each municiplaity. The statistical regions are not really established divisions of the country and have only been created recently. Regionalization is an ongoing debate in Slovenia so perhaps it might be a case of waiting for districts to be established and then split the category. Why not put this up for discussion on the WikiProject Slovenia rather than getting individual opinions separately? If I really had to divide the category, I myself would tend to divide into the traditional regions, despite them being administratively obsolete i.e. Upper Carniola, Lower Carniola, Inner Carniola, Slovenian Littoral, Slovenian Carinthia, Prekmurje and Styria, just because that is how people within Slovenia identify with their region. Again I stress, this is just a historical division. This leaves the capital Ljubljana which is often thought as a region of its own, and lies in between the three Carniola regions. In any case in practice not as straight forward as it might seem.

I'm with the Dr. on this, but I wouldn't know where to begin, either. In any event, I have AWB, so when you are ready to make the switch I can make it a lot easier. Well I'd supported a recategorization by Upper Carniola, Lower Carniola, Inner Carniola, Slovenian Littoral, Slovenian Carinthia, Prekmurje and Styria. But whether or not municipal categories are too small or not the current category must be split somehow. Its way too big for places. Dr. Blofeld 11:09, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

Recat has been done. If you create any new articles please categorize by municipality. I agree that if SLovenia had proper districts it would have been better to categorize by a bigger area but as neither the historical or statistiical districts have any real meaning then given the sheer amount by municpality was the only way it could be done. Settlement/municipality distinction

Hi, Kaktus999! It seems to me that the data about the number of inhabitants and other statistical data in some settlements of Slovenia (the municipal centres) are currently unclear. To avoid misunderstandings, it would probably make sense to create separate articles for all the 210-211 municipalities of Slovenia (as it has been done in the Slovene Wikipedia) and present statistical data for the municipality there. Otherwise, for example the infobox in the article about the settlement Bič (it's in the Municipality of Trebnje) gives data for the settlement, whereas the infobox in the article about the settlement Trebnje it gives data about the municipality, which is inconsistent. Even more so, as the infobox is named 'Infobox Settlement'. --Eleassar ^{my talk} 09:22, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

Yes, I know it is unclear and inconsistent. I am trying to finish off creating the articles for all the settlements (only 16 municipalities left) ... then I can hopefully get on to clearing some of the details. I think that the infobox for the municipalities could be changed to include this information and the articles expanded to clarify this, otherwise you have a load of confusing article tiltles and the task of consistently replacing them in all the settlements is enormous.Kaktus999 (talk) 09:43, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

I've seen that you had added a note ("the data given is for the entire municipality") to Trebnje, but it doesn't solve the problem. Where should we list the data for the city then if not in the article about the city? Yes, this is just a temporary solution. Trebnje is not a city. As far as I can remember to qualify as a city it would need either a cathedral or an institute of higher education. It is a town.Kaktus999 (talk) 12:15, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

The article City says: "Although there is no agreement on how a city is distinguished from a town within general English language meanings, many cities have a particular administrative, legal, or historical status based on local law." I don't want to argue either. It's just that the official translation here is "city", not "town". "Sklep o podelitvi statusa mesta naseljem v Republiki Sloveniji" has been translated by a reliable source as "Decision on the city status granted to the settlements in the Republic of Slovenia".[2] It seems strange perhaps, but according to the policies of Wikipedia we have to follow the sources. Reliable sources can also have incorrect translations. Reading the page City on Wikipedia shows that the difference is confusing sometimes and how places qualify is not clear, but if you read the entire page and bear in mind that Trebnje itself has a population of just over 3000, it does not really fit into this category. Status mesta can much more clearly be translated as town status.Kaktus999 (talk) 16:13, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

I don't see why Trebnje would not really fit into the category due to the small number of residents. For example, the article City states about the United States (an English-speaking country, of course) that "in Illinois, cities must have a minimum population of 2,500 but in Nebraska, cities must have a minimum of only 800 residents. In Oregon, Kansas, Kentucky, North Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa, all incorporated municipalities are cities. In Ohio, a municipality automatically becomes a city if it has 5,000 residents counted in a federal census but it reverts to a village if its population drops below 5,000. In Nebraska, 5,000 residents is the minimum for a city of the first class while 800 is the minimum for a city of the second class. The Constitution of Idaho makes no distinction between incorporated towns or cities."

Also, as already said, we have to follow the translations provided by reliable sources even if you think they are incorrect. Per Wikipedia:Verifiability, "translations published by reliable sources are preferred over translations by Wikipedians, but translations by Wikipedians are preferred over machine translations." and per Wikipedia:No original research, "Where English translations of non-English material are unavailable, editors may supply their own, subject to consensus, with the original posted alongside or in a footnote. Copyright restrictions permitting, translations published by reliable sources are preferred to those provided by Wikipedians." --Eleassar ^{my talk} 16:58, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

Germans have a similar problem.[4] Perhaps, it would make sense to call the city municipalities (11) city and others of the listed town. That's because a city municipality is a municipality comprising of a larger town/city) ("mestna občina je občina, ki zaobseže večje mesto").[5] (pg. 10) This makes the distinction similar to the German Stadt / Großstadt. --Eleassar ^{my talk} 12:05, 15 January 2012 (UTC)

That was more or less what I was originally suggesting. In fact the reliable source you yousrelf quoted before [6] has also changed its terminology to Decision granting the status of town to settlements in the Republic of Slovenia, so it confirms that reliable sources sometimes have incorrect translations (which they sometimes actually correct) ... anyway ... doing other stuff right now ... might get back to settlements at some point. Have you already seen Culture.si? It's interesting because they have articles on all Slovenian municipalities with over 10,000 inhabitants, licensed under cc-by-sa 3.0.[10] This means these articles can be freely copied to the English Wikipedia (with an attribution provided). --Eleassar ^{my talk} 18:56, 9 February 2011 (UTC)

ArbCom 2017 election voter message

Hello, Kaktus999. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
