Strata Source is a third-party engine branch of the Source engine. It is advertised as being a branch focused on adding "modern features and development practices", and is currently being used by three distinct projects: Portal 2: Community Edition, Momentum Mod, and Portal: Revolution.

History

Strata Source's development started as the engine behind Portal 2: Community Edition, where it was a modified version of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive's branch of the Source engine with Portal 2's features ported. Going under the name Chaos Engine, his allowed for the introduction of many CS:GO-only features such as Cascaded Shadow Mapping (CSM), Panorama UI, and WebM video support. As it was developed, another project, Momentum Mod, changed over to use Chaos Engine, and eventually another Portal 2 mod named Portal: Revolution began to use the Chaos Engine.
