Matrag (translated literally from Algerian Arabic as « stick »[1]) is a traditional Algerian martial art that focuses on striking with a sword. It is believed to have originated in the Arab tribes of the Aurès Mountains, such as the Beni Amer, and it was used in combat for centuries. [2]

History

The exact origins of Matrag are unknown, but it is believed to be at least a few centuries old. It is thought to have originated in the Bedouin Arab tribes of the Oran region of Algeria. Matrag was used for self-defense and for hunting, and it was also used in combat during tribal feuds and wars.
